Mt. Diablo Globelily

P1060358It’s always fun to visit a different area and check out the local flora and fauna. Besides the Wild Turkey shown in the previous post from my hike in Mt. Diablo State Park, the find of the day was the rare Mt. Diablo Globelily, also known as the Mt. Diablo Fairy-Lantern. It’s Latin name is Calochortus pulchellus which puts it in the same genus with our local Mariposa Lily. Both are true lilies of the family Liliaceae and both were historically important food sources for Native American populations. Not that I would dig up one of these beauties for a snack.
