The Las Virgenes Municipal Water District in Calabasas has a wonderful publication available for free viewing and/or downloading at http://www.lvmwd.com/other-services/publications/a-california-friendly-guide. You can choose an interactive flip-page brochure or a PDF. You can save the PDF to your computer to view at your convenience, as well as print the pages you want.

A printed version of this catalog is available at their headquarters office, 4232 Las Virgenes Road, Calabasas, CA during regular business hours. For questions regarding this brochure, call Customer Service at (818)251-2200.

On page 15, you will find Hummingbird Sage, recommended for planting under Oaks. Of course, you would not plant anything within 6 feet of the trunk to prevent root rot fungus. Here is a photo of Hummingbird Sage growing under the canopy of our Coast Live Oak in the front yard. If you’ve seen what it looks like in the wild this time of year, you can appreciate how attractive it can be with a little extra water and some TLC.

It explains the inner workings of plant medicine, such as how manzanita’s (Arctostaphylos spp.) arbutin becomes antiseptic in the urinary tract. Thank you for leading a terrific herb walk on a perfect day. In all my years in Ventura County, that was my first venture into the Potrero. I was immediately struck by the awe inspiring view of Mt. Haddock framed by complex sedimentary rock walls forming the canyon. I was a little surprised at the diversity of the flora in the canyon. Admittedly, I probably know less about botany than anyone else on the hike. The PDF document you attached will reinforce all of the in-field learning.

Thank you so much for the picture!! What a great memory. I also wanted to thank you for the walk. For me, it was a great introduction to the numerous plants in the area. I knew I should’ve been taking notes, but didn’t want to hold up my husband and daughter, so of course I’m drawing some blanks when I look at my photos, mainly for the shrubs. I got laurel sumac, holly-leaved cherry, chamise (I liked what you told us about it being a good firewood in wet weather), poison oak, toyon, basketbush, desert sage, madrone, and manzanita.
