Arroyo Hondo Preserve is amazing! The ocean is just across the highway and the lushness of the landscape and sheer diversity of plants and plant communities at the Preserve are exceptional.
In the creekside riparian habitat we’ll see an array of Southern California native trees, including White Alder, California Bay, Blue Elderberry, Bigleaf Maple, and Coast Live Oak. Under their canopy we’ll look for shade-loving natives like Gooseberry, Mugwort, and Hummingbird Sage.
In the sunnier sage scrub and chaparral areas, native Toyon, Black Sage, Coastal Sagebrush, Prickly-Pear, Lemonade Berry, and “Mountain-Lilac” (Ceanothus) are thriving. The Preserve is also home to numerous birds and other wildlife.
We’ll gather by the barn/visitor center on Saturday, April 17, at 9:00 a.m. After some easy walking, identifying plants, sampling their scents and tastes, and discussing their uses, we’ll stop by the creek at Hollister Meadow for a snack break. We’ll make our way back to the barn by 12:00 p.m. or thereabouts when I’ll break out my mobile bookstore. After the walk, all participants will receive a detailed email with plant list, notes, and useful links.
Due to COVID-19 concerns, I have made some changes from previous walks, in effect until further notice:
- Attendance will be limited to 12 participants.
- Those with flu-like symptoms will be asked to remain at home.
- Temperatures will be checked upon arrival.
- Everyone will be required to wear a mask or face covering and observe 6 feet of physical distancing.
No dogs or smoking, please.
REGISTRATION:
The cost for the walk is $35. The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County also requests a suggested $10 donation at the site to cover stewardship of the land. Please arrive prepared to be generous.
