SUMMARY:Free Herb Walk & Book Signing at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION: Although there is no extra charge for this event beyond the regular Garden admission\, registration is required in order to monitor the number of people on the walks. Free registration is available at the event page at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden website. Please note that\, as of August 18\, reservations for admission to the Garden are not yet available for the month of October. Guests who reserve a space for the herb walks will need to return to the website at a later date to reserve (and pay for) for admission.\nPlease join me for a free herb walk and book signing event at the world-renowned Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Regular garden admission will apply as it does every day but there is no additional charge for the guided walk. We will tour the extensive native plant collection in search of some of the 70 plants featured in my 2021 book\, Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants (Falcon Guides). The first walk will begin at 10:30 a.m.\, followed by the book signing from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. A second walk will begin after the signing at 1:00 and conclude at 2:30 p.m. On the walks\, I will discuss tips for correctly identifying the plants\, their growth habits\, and their traditional and modern uses as medicinal herbs. \nThe Santa Barbara Botanic Garden Nursery will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for those who are inspired to grow some of these valuable medicinal plants at home. Each plant entry in my book includes cultivation tips and there are links throughout the book to websites where information is available on growing natives. You can also visit my own Resources page and scroll down to the sections on Growing Native Plants and Native Plant Nurseries. \nABOUT THE SANTA BARBARA BOTANIC GARDEN:Dedicated to the plants of California\, Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s Living Collection features wild plants from across California and the California Floristic Province (CFP). Stretching from southern Oregon to Baja California\, the CFP is one of the world’s six biodiversity hot spots characterized by a Mediterranean-type climate featuring cool\, often wet winters and long\, dry summers. With more than 900 taxa in the collection\, the Garden displays only a fraction of the remarkable diversity of the California flora\, yet there is so much to explore. \nABOUT LANNY KAUFER:Lanny Kaufer has been leading Herb Walks in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties since 1976\, educating scores of locals and visitors on the flora of the area with a focus on herbs that can be used for food and medicine.
