Although the total eclipse begins at 11:18 p.m.\, we’ll see it start with a penumbral eclipse a little before 9:00. This photo shows the most recent partial eclipse during a moon hike on September 17\, 2024. The next time a total lunar eclipse will be visible in Ventura County before 1 a.m. or later at night is August 6\, 2036. \nThe March full moon also marks the Spring Equinox\, arriving one week before it and rising approximately due east as the sun sets approximately due west. Many of the non-natives are from regions that share Southern California’s Mediterranean climate. Most of them are used by Indigenous people for food and medicine wherever they grow on the planet. The native plants are used by the Chumash\, Tongva\, and other tribes. \n\n\n\nThe Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at CSUCI is a branch of the Extended University designed for adults over 50 that offers college-level noncredit courses with no assignments or grades. In their own words\, “OLLI at CSUCI is dedicated to enriching the lives of lifelong learners by providing opportunities for intellectual stimulation and social connection designed for adults aged 50 and above. Starting in the riparian habitat of Sheldon Canyon\, we’ll gradually climb up to the saddle in a mix of sun and shade. At the top\, in the sunny chaparral habitat\, we’ll have a stunning view of the Ojai Valley and surrounding mountains. \nWe’ll find a wide diversity of native plants to identify while demonstrating and discussing their many uses by foragers\, herbalists\, and naturalists for food\, herbal medicine\, first aid\, home remedies\, survival\, crafts\, ceremony and more. The entire distance\, if we make it all the way to the top is 2 miles. \nThis time of year we can expect to find Coast Live Oak\, Yarrow\, Mugwort\, Hummingbird Sage\, and Mariposa Lily\, among many others. Krishnamurti’s teachings of mindfulness and love of unspoiled nature attracted thousands of people to the Ojai Valley and to The Oak Grove. Tajiguas Creek creates its own riparian environment as it weaves its way across the landscape to the nearby ocean. Rancho Tajiguas will eventually be a center for conservation\, agriculture\, and public access. \n\n\n\nWe will walk up a ranch road about a half-mile along Tajiguas Creek to the old ranch bunkhouse and then proceed up Tajiguas Canyon for another quarter-mile on a seldom-used trail for a shaded herb walk . We will retrace our steps and then you’ll proceed in your car to the beautiful and historic Hacienda where you can enjoy your sack lunch in the courtyard and utilize the restroom facilities. This beautiful oak-forested trail along Sisar Creek is one of my all-time favorites in the Ojai Valley. It’s actually located in the Upper Ojai Valley at the foot of the monumental Topa Topa Bluffs. Please join me for a Nature Hike there on Saturday\, May 31\, from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. We will see and smell aromatic California Bay trees along with several other riparian trees\, including Bigleaf Maple\, not often found at this lower elevation. We’ll search for the elusive and uncommon Sweet Cicely and identify a wide variety of edible and medicinal plants. Photo: Lanny Kaufer \n\n\n\nThis hike is fairly easy but I classify it as a “nature hike” instead of an “herb walk” because of elevation gain at the beginning and a short creek crossing across boulders or through the shallow water. \n\n\n\nI operate in the Los Padres National Forest under a Special Use Permit from the Ojai Ranger District Office of the U.S. Forest Service designed for guides who provide recreational and interpretive services to the public. As I do on all my walks and hikes\, I will demonstrate and discuss the modern and ancient uses of wild plants. Poisonous plants will also be identified. \n\n\n\nTrailside discussion will include topics such as the difference between native and naturalized plants\, the role of humans in the ecological balance\, sustainable foraging\, and other topics generated by the participants. (June 22\, 8:00 a.m.)\n\n\n\nJUMP TO REGISTRATION\n\n\n\nIf you’ve ever walked or hiked with me\, you’ve probably heard me speak of the special beauty of Pine Mountain. Experience it for yourself on our annual Summer Solstice Nature Hike on the Reyes Peak Trail. On Sunday\, June 22\, we’ll visit some of the most spectacular scenery and habitat that Ventura County has to offer just when many late spring wildflowers are blooming up there at an elevation of 7000 feet(!).  According to Craig Carey\, author of Hiking and Backpacking Santa Barbara and Ventura\, the Reyes Peak Trail along the northern slope of the peak is “quite simply one of the most beautiful stretches in the southern Los Padres.” \n\n\n\nThe outing will start at 9:00 a.m. with a car caravan of about 35 miles up Highway 33 from the Maricopa Plaza\, (1207 Maricopa Highway\, Ojai\, CA 93023) to the Reyes Peak trailhead. The final 5.5 miles are on a narrow\, winding paved road and the very last half-mile is dirt. Trucks or SUV’s are preferred for the last stretch but most passenger cars with high clearance can also make the drive. \n\n\n\nWe will start walking into the Sespe Wilderness from the trailhead (where there is a restroom) at about 10:30 a.m.\, stop for lunch (not provided) in the forest\, and return to the trailhead by 3:30 p.m.\, arriving back at the Maricopa Plaza by 4:00 p.m. We will hike on a well-used trail through Mixed Conifer Forest habitat\, stopping often to identify and discuss native plants\, birds and wildlife. \n\n\n\nThis intermediate level hike is suitable for moderately experienced hikers or physically fit beginners. There will be some elevation gain and loss skirting the north side of Reyes Peak\, sometimes traversing steep hillsides on a narrow trail. The total hiking distance will be about 3 miles. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: Those with respiratory or circulatory issues possibly affected by altitude should consult with a physician before attempting this hike. \n\n\n\nWeather and marine layer permitting\, we will have panoramic views of the Cuyama Valley to the north and the Channel Islands to the south from the “sky island” of Pine Mountain and Reyes Peak.  This hike is another in a series of backcountry walks and hikes under an Operating Permit from the U.S. Forest Service designed for guides who provide recreational and interpretive services to the public. Nearly destroyed by development\, the remaining estuary was restored in the late 1990s by a group of concerned citizens along with the City of Carpinteria\, UCSB\, and the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County. Completed in 1997\, the 8-acre portion of the marsh owned by the City of Carpinteria was renamed the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park. \n\n\n\nLeopard Shark. Video: Malia Smith\n\n\n\nThe park includes walking trails and interpretive signage. It is home to hundreds of migrating birds and other wildlife\, including exotic sharks\, rays and native fish when conditions are right. Depending on the tide level we may be able to see marine wildlife like the Shovelnose Guitarfish\, Round Stingrays\, Smoothhound Sharks or the Leopard Shark shown in Malia Smith’s video from our walk there in 2023. \n\n\n\nThere is a great variety of edible and medicinal plants of the Coastal Strand and Coastal Sage Scrub plant communities for us to see and learn from. Useful native plants there include Blue Elderberry\, California Blackberry\, Grindelia\, Lemonade Berry\, Mugwort\, Pickleweed\, Wild Rose\, and Coastal Sagebrush. \n\n\n\nDue to the sensitivity of the habitat\, dogs are prohibited. Thank you for your interest.\n\n\n\nOn Sunday\, September 28\, I will lead my 12th annual Fall Equinox Nature Hike in the peaceful Mixed Conifer Forest on the “sky island” known as Pine Mountain (elevation: 7000 feet). I promise that first time visitors to this area will be surprised and delighted to find a thick forest of pine\, fir and incense-cedar so close to the Ventura coast. If we’re lucky\, pine nuts will be falling as we walk. \n\n\n\nWeather and marine layer permitting\, we will have panoramic views of the Cuyama Valley to the north and the Channel Islands to the south. According to Craig Carey\, author of Hiking and Backpacking Santa Barbara and Ventura\, the Reyes Peak Trail along the northern slope of the peak is “quite simply one of the most beautiful stretches in the southern Los Padres.” \n\n\n\nBiogeographers include Pine Mountain in a select group of “sky islands\,” defined as isolated mountains surrounded by radically different lowland environments. We can expect to see several high-altitude plants and trees like White Fir\, Sugar Pine\, Sierra Gooseberry\, Wax Currant\, and White Bark Raspberry that are more commonly found in the Southern Sierra Nevada mountains. \n\n\n\nThe outing will start at 9:00 a.m. with a car caravan (or carpool for those open to it) of about 36 miles up Highway 33 from the Maricopa Plaza\, (1207 Maricopa Highway\, Ojai\, CA 93023) to the Reyes Peak trailhead. The last 6.5 miles include 5.5 miles on a narrow\, winding\, paved road and the very last mile on a dirt road. Trucks or SUV’s are preferred for the last stretch but most passenger cars with reasonable front axle clearance can make the drive. \n\n\n\nWe will start walking into the Sespe Wilderness from the trailhead (where there is a restroom) at about 10:30 a.m.\, stop for lunch (not provided) in the forest\, and return to the trailhead by about 4:00 p.m.\, arriving back at the Maricopa Plaza by about 4:30 p.m. We will hike on a well-used trail through mixed conifer forest habitat\, stopping often to identify and discuss native plants\, birds and wildlife. \n\n\n\nThis intermediate level hike is suitable for fit\, moderately experienced hikers or physically fit beginners. There will be some elevation gain and loss skirting the north side of Reyes Peak\, sometimes traversing across steep hillsides on a narrow trail. Also known as El Estero\, the Nature Park is a rare saltwater wetland in Southern California. Nearly destroyed by development\, the remaining estuary was restored in the late 1990s by a group of concerned citizens along with the City of Carpinteria\, UCSB\, and the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County. Completed in 1997\, the 8-acre portion of the marsh owned by the City of Carpinteria was renamed the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park. \n\n\n\nLeopard Shark. It is home to hundreds of migrating birds and other wildlife\, including exotic sharks\, rays and native fish when conditions are right. On Friday evening\, December 5\, Rondia and I will lead a third back-to-back Supermoon Sunset Nature Hike from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. From the trailhead we’ll gradually walk about 1.5 miles on a well used dirt road with gradual elevation gain to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the rising of the moon over the iconic Topa Topa Bluffs to the east amidst Ojai’s famed “pink moment.” At the same time\, as happens during a full moon\, the sun will be setting over the mountains to the west. \n\n\n\nThese synchronistic seasonal phenomena are beautifully captured in Stephen Adams’ photo above and by Ojai artist Jennifer Moses in her oil-on-linen painting below\, “Sunswept.” \n\n\n\nOil-on-linen painting “Sunswept” by Jennifer Moses (jennifermoses.com)\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n On the way up in the daylight\, we’ll stop along the way to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants including\, among others: \n\n\n\nCalifornia BuckwheatBlack and Purple SageCoastal SagebrushToyonHorehoundPassion FruitYucca andBrickellbush \n\n\n\nAfter witnessing the sunset and moonrise\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead at about 7:00. Registrants will receive instructions on where to park\, what to bring\, etc. Afterwards\, they’ll get an email with a plant list and other notes. \n\n\n\nThe After-Party: Then at 7:00 p.m. you’re invited to join me and Rondia on the heated patio at Liz and Jeremy Haffner’s Ojai Valley Brewery. Brewmasters Jeremy\, Griffin Davis\, and their staff will be pouring their amazing locally-sourced beers\, ales\, stouts\, wines\, and non-alcoholic beverages as we celebrate the full moon while “La Luna” continues to rise in the eastern sky. Noody Bowlz Food Cart will be there serving until 9:00. Here is what they say on their website: “The Noody Bowlz cart serves steaming hot bold flavored sauces on top of perfectly cooked chilled noodles\, creating warm delicious bite after bite.” You also are welcome to bring your own snacks or dinner\, if you prefer. \n\n\n\nOjai Valley Brewery beers change with the seasons and reflect the plants of Ojai. Three staples you’re likely to find on the list any time of year are Sugar Bush IPA\, brewed with wild local Ojai “Sugar Bush” Sumac; White Pixie Ale\, brewed with Pixie tangerine zests and orchard blossoms; and an amazing Chaparral Ale flavored and bittered with White and Black Sage and local Sagebrush instead of the usual Hops. Jeremy describes it as “built to mimic the scent on Shelf Road.” That’s where we’ll be walking! Non-alcoholic offerings also change with the seasons and may include an Elderflower-Blackberry Spritzer. \n\n\n\nOjai Valley Brewery launched Side Street Wines in 2023 with winemaker Fabien Castel in charge. Fabien worked side by side with the legendary California winemaker Adam Tolmach at Ojai Vineyard for 20 years before joining forces with Liz and Jeremy. \n\n\n\nNote: Food and drinks are not included in the price of the hike but OVB offers my hikers a 10% discount on beverages. \n\n\n\nPLUS! Special Free Moon Viewing Event: After the supermoon hike\, join our special guest\, Julie Esmond of Alta Vista Tours\, on the patio at Ojai Valley Brewery for telescope viewing of the Moon. \n\n\n\nHer astronomy guide Luc\, who holds a degree in astrophysics and has led hundreds of telescope nights\, will reveal the moon’s craters and maria (ancient lava seas) in stunning detail through a high-powered telescope — features invisible to the naked eye but breathtaking up close. If conditions allow\, we may also spot Jupiter and Saturn. This added event is weather-dependent\, though December typically brings clear skies to Ojai. \n\n\n\nMy 2021 book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, will be available at the trailhead for sale and signing. \n\n\n\nIn addition to the adult tickets ($35)\, tickets for students 13-17 ($25) and children 6-12 ($15) are also available. Children 5 and younger can attend free\, one per adult. One supervising adult must accompany each child 12 years old or younger. \n\n\n\nWEATHER POLICY: Walks and hikes will go on RAIN OR SHINE unless there is a steady downpour on the morning of the event\, probability of thunderstorm\, or a solid forecast of either the day before. Light rain or drizzle will not result in cancellation on my part. I will update registrants by email and text\, as needed\, and issue refunds if I need to cancel because of the weather. \n\n\n\nDOG POLICY: Years of experience have taught me that dogs on herb walks\, even on a leash\, are not a good fit.
