SUMMARY:Carpinteria Salt Marsh Herb Walk
DESCRIPTION:Please be sure to use the REGISTER link below before returning to this page and clicking on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. Note: Online payment includes a PayPal fee. If you prefer\, you may mail a check. When you register you will receive mailing instructions.\nREGISTER\nOn Sunday\, October 2\, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. we will visit the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park\, also known as El Estero\, a rare salt wetland in Southern California. Nearly destroyed by development\, the remaining estuary was restored in the late 1990s by a group of concerned citizens along with the City of Carpinteria\, UCSB\, and the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County. Completed in 1997\, the 8-acre portion of the marsh owned by the City of Carpinteria was renamed the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park. \nShovelnose Guitarfish and Round Stingrays seen from the bridge in the Salt Marsh on July 11\, 2021. Photo: John Brant\nThe park includes walking trails and interpretive signage. It is home to hundreds of migrating birds and other wildlife\, including exotic sharks\, rays and native fish when conditions are right. This event is scheduled to coincide with the right time of year and tide level to be able to see the marine wildlife. We shall see if the best laid plans of mice and men prevail. No guarantees. \nThere also is a great variety of edible and medicinal plants of the Coastal Strand and Coastal Sage Scrub plant communities which\, predictably\, will be there for us to see and learn from. Useful native plants there include Blue Elderberry\, California Blackberry\, Grindelia\, Lemonade Berry\, Mugwort\, Pickleweed\, Wild Rose\, and Coastal Sagebrush. \nDue to the sensitivity of the habitat\, dogs are prohibited here. No smoking\, please. \nCopies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, will be on hand for sale and signing before and after the walk. \nREGISTRATION:\nThe cost for the walk is $35. Please be sure to use the REGISTER link below before returning to this page and clicking on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. Note: Online payment includes a PayPal fee. If you prefer\, you may mail a check. When you register you will receive mailing instructions.\nIf the event sells out\, PayPal will not accept your payment. You will see a message that says this event “is not available at this time” and you will be returned to this page. If that happens\, be sure to click on the REGISTER button below to sign up for the waiting list. Photo: Lanny Kaufer\nOn Sunday\, September 18\, 2022\, I will lead my 10th annual Fall Equinox Nature Hike in the peaceful Mixed Conifer Forest on the “sky island” known as Pine Mountain (elevation: 7000 feet). I promise that first time visitors to this area will be surprised and delighted to find a thick forest of pines\, fir and incense-cedar so close to the Ventura coast. If we’re lucky\, pine nuts will be falling as we walk. \nAccording to Craig Carey\, author of Hiking and Backpacking Santa Barbara and Ventura\, the Reyes Peak Trail along the northern slope of the peak is “quite simply one of the most beautiful stretches in the southern Los Padres.” \nBiogeographers include Pine Mountain in a select group of “sky islands\,” defined as isolated mountains surrounded by radically different lowland environments. We can expect to see several high-altitude plants and trees like White Fir and Sugar Pine more commonly found in the Southern Sierra Nevada mountains. Weather and marine layer permitting\, we will have panoramic views of the Cuyama Valley to the north and the Channel Islands to the south. \nRondia and friends enjoying lunch. Photo: Chris Kudelka\nThe outing will start at 9:00 a.m. with a car caravan (or carpool for those open to it) of about 36 miles up Highway 33 from the Maricopa Plaza\, (1207 Maricopa Highway\, Ojai\, CA 93023) to the Reyes Peak trailhead. The last 6.5 miles include 5.5 miles on a narrow\, winding\, paved road and the very last mile on a dirt road. Trucks or SUV’s are preferred for the last stretch but most passenger cars with reasonable front axle clearance can make the drive. \nLanny examines the needles of a White Fir sapling on the Reyes Peak Trail. Photo: John Griffith\n  \n  \nWe will start walking into the Sespe Wilderness from the trailhead (where there is a restroom) at about 10:30 a.m.\, stop for lunch (not provided) in the forest\, and return to the trailhead by about 3:30 p.m.\, arriving back at the Maricopa Plaza by about 4:00 p.m. We will hike on a well-used trail through mixed conifer forest habitat\, stopping often to identify and discuss native plants\, birds and wildlife. \nThis intermediate level hike is suitable for fit\, moderately experienced hikers or physically fit beginners. There will be some elevation gain and loss skirting the north side of Reyes Peak\, sometimes traversing steep hillsides on a narrow trail. The total hiking distance will be about 3 miles. PLEASE NOTE: Those with respiratory or circulatory issues possibly affected by altitude of 7000 feet should consult with a physician before attempting this hike. \nView of the Channel Islands from Reyes Peak. Photo: Erika Klohe\nThis hike is another in a series of backcountry walks and hikes under an Operating Permit from the Ojai Ranger District Office of the U.S. Forest Service designed for guides who provide recreational and interpretive services to the public. After the hike participants will receive a detailed follow-up email including a list of all plants and wildlife identified. \nI will have copies of my new book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, with me for sale and signing before the hike. \nPLEASE NOTE: Light rain will not cancel. Heavy rain or thunderstorms will. Once you register you will receive weather updates. No dogs or smoking\, please. \nThe cost is $45. Senior and student/teen discounts are available upon request. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Kids 6-12 can go at half-price\, one per adult\, pending request and approval. Children 5 years old and younger can come along for free\, also pending request and approval. Toddlers need to be in a carrier due to the nature of the trail. \nPlease use the REGISTER button below to sign up before returning to this page to complete your payment and secure your space with the PayPal button or request instructions for mailing a check for $45. \nIf the event sells out\, PayPal will not accept your payment. You will see a message that says this event “is not available at this time” and you will be returned to this page. SUMMARY:Arroyo Hondo Preserve Herb Walk
DESCRIPTION:Pastel painting of pre-fire Hollister Meadow at Arroyo Hondo Preserve by Chris Chapman \nPlease be sure to use the REGISTER link below before returning to this page to click on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. Note: Online payment includes a PayPal fee. To avoid that\, when you register you can request instructions for mailing a payment of $35/person.\nIf the event sells out\, PayPal will not accept your payment. If spaces become available they will be filled based on date and time of registration.\nREGISTER\nThe Land Trust for Santa Barbara County’s Arroyo Hondo Preserve has always been an amazing example of California’s biodiversity. The Montecito Journal describes it as “one of Santa Barbara’s most significant treasures.” Now that the Alisal Fire swept through it in October of 2021\, it also serves as an example of the amazing regenerative power of Nature. On August 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\, I’ll return for the first time since the fire to observe how the land is regaining its legendary status as “the jewel of the Gaviota Coast.” \nThe Alisal Fire approaching Arroyo Hondo. Photo: Land Trust for Santa Barbara County\nWe’ll look in the creekside riparian habitat for the resprouting and re-emergence of Southern California native trees\, including White Alder\, California Bay\, Blue Elderberry\, Bigleaf Maple\, and Coast Live Oak. Where the tree canopy used to be\, we’ll seek out signs of the return of shade-loving native plants and herbs like Giant Horsetail\, Gooseberry\, Hummingbird Sage\, Maidenhair Fern and Giant Chain Fern. \nCarrizo Grass returning on Day 52. Photo: Land Trust for Santa Barbara County\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe sunnier exposed sage scrub and chaparral areas were hardest hit by the fire but I still expect to see natives like Toyon\, Black Sage\, Coastal Sagebrush\, Lemonade Berry\, and Greenbark Ceanothus resprouting or popping up from the seed bank stored below the soil surface. \nWestern Sycamore resprouting from the base of the burnt trunk. A number of the plants that we’ll meet can be found in the book. I’ll also have Milt McAuley’s classic Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains which includes every plant we’ll see. \nThe cost for the walk is $35. Senior\, student and child discounts are available by request. The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County also requests a suggested $10 donation at the site to cover stewardship of the land. Once registered\, attendees will receive an email during the week prior to the walk with more information and directions to Arroyo Hondo. No dogs or smoking are allowed. \nParticipants will receive an email afterwards with notes and a complete list of all plants and wildlife observed. \nPlease be sure to use the REGISTER link below before returning to this page to click on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. SUMMARY:Wetland Wednesday Herb Walk
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Ojai Valley Land Conservancy \nPlease use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal link at bottom of the page to secure your space. The PayPal cost includes their fee. If you prefer\, when you register you may request instructions for mailing a check for $25/person. \nREGISTER\nPlease join me and my wife Rondia for the third in a series of leisurely evening strolls on the historic wetland that is now the Ojai Meadows Preserve on Wednesday\, June 29\, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. We’ll identify native plants that have been used for centuries by the Chumash and other Indigenous people of California for shelter\, food\, medicine\, fiber\, ceremony and much more. Gardeners will discover how these plants can be used in home yard and garden landscapes. We’ll view first-hand the many benefits of the preservation and restoration of this special piece of land by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy  (OVLC). In the pond at the low spot in the wetland\, we’ll likely see waterfowl and typical wetland plants such as tules. This walk is presented under a Special Use Permit from OVLC. \nFor decades the wetland was buried under sediment and fill dirt from nearby construction. A grove of non-native Eucalyptus trees was planted in the 1950s\, negating the possibility of native habitat returning on its own. The property also was threatened with the possibility of a shopping center and parking lots. The meadows were acquired in 2000 by the OVLC with an outpouring of community support to protect them. Most of the $1.35M came from 140 citizens and businesses\, who demonstrated their commitment to preserving the meadows’ natural beauty. Flood waters from Nordhoff High School and Maricopa Highway were diverted onto the meadows bringing wildlife back to the area. Native plant restoration is an ongoing project. \nSame section of highway AFTER diversion of water into historical wetland at Ojai Meadows Preserve. A number of plants that we will meet can be found in the book. I’ll also have Milt McAuley’s classic Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains which includes every plant we’ll see. \nPaid registrants will receive a confirmation email with parking directions\, what to bring\, etc. Afterwards\, they will get a follow-up email with a list of all plants and wildlife seen. Please join our annual Summer Solstice Nature Hike on the Reyes Peak Trail. We’ll visit some of the most spectacular scenery and habitat that Ventura County has to offer just when many late spring wildflowers are blooming up there at an elevation of 7000 feet(!).  According to Craig Carey\, author of Hiking and Backpacking Santa Barbara and Ventura\, the Reyes Peak Trail along the northern slope of the peak is “quite simply one of the most beautiful stretches in the southern Los Padres.” \nRondia and friends enjoying lunch. A “supermoon” occurs when the moon is unusually close to the Earth\, making it appear very large. Technically\, the moon will reach complete fullness at 4:51 a.m. on Tuesday morning\, making Monday night the best time to see it before it’s too late at night for a hike. \nWe’ll meet at the trailhead at 6:15 p.m. Then at 6:30 we’ll gradually hike about 1.5 miles to a vista point. We’ll encounter some elevation gain on a well-worn\, dirt fire road with uneven footing in places. Along the way we’ll stop to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants\, possibly including: \nBlue Elderberry\nHorehound\nBlack & Purple Sage\nCoastal Sagebrush\nPrickly-Pear \nAfter witnessing the moonrise and sunset\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead at about 8:45 p.m. \nI will have copies of my new book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, with me for sale and signing before and after the hike. \nRain or chance of thunderstorms will cancel the hike. No dogs or smoking\, please. \nREGISTRATION INFO:\nThe cost of the hike is $35. Please note: the PayPal payment will include their fee. Once you register you will receive instructions to mail a check if you prefer not to use PayPal. Paid reservations are refundable up to 6:30 p.m. on Friday\, June 10. After that\, if I receive your cancellation with enough time to fill your space and I’m able to do so\, you will receive a refund. \nSenior\, student and child discounts are available by request. Paid registrants will receive a confirmation email prior to the hike with all necessary info\, including weather forecast and parking directions.  They will also receive a follow-up email afterwards with a list of all plants and wildlife seen and other notes. \nPlease use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before completing your payment with the PayPal button or personal check to secure your space. \nIf the event sells out\, PayPal will not accept your payment. You will see a message that says this event “is not available at this time” and you will be returned to this page. SUMMARY:Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk at Harmon Canyon Preserve
DESCRIPTION:This event is presented by the Ventura Land Trust. Please visit this event page at their website to learn more and register for the Walk.\nThe Ventura Land Trust is partnering with me again on Saturday\, May 28\, for an easy edible and medicinal plant walk at Harmon Canyon Preserve from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. \nThe walk will include plant identification and information for the beginning to experienced botanist\, herbalist\, or anyone curious about uses of wild plants. The herb walk will cover approximately 2 miles round trip in Harmon Canyon Preserve. Many useful plants\, including Blue Elderberry\, Coast Live Oak\, Black Sage\, Purple Sage\, Sagebrush\, and Wild Fennel\, make their home in Harmon Canyon Preserve’s 2\,123 acres of land\, amid roughly 1\,000 acres of endangered coastal sage scrub. All the plants are making a visible\, and much welcomed\, comeback 4 years after the Thomas Fire devastated the area. \nI will have my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants\, available for sale and signing before and after the walk. \nAll walk participants should bring a water bottle and wear sturdy shoes\, long pants\, a hat\, and sunscreen. \n\nDirections to Harmon Canyon Preserve:\nHere is a Google map and directions to Harmon Canyon Preserve. Harmon Canyon Preserve is located at 7511 Foothill Road\, near Foothill Road and Kimball Road\, in Ventura. \nDrive west on Foothill Road from Kimball Road\, then turn right onto McVittie Place before turning right into the Preserve. Do not turn right just before McVittie Place at the sign saying 7511 Foothill Rd. That driveway will take you to a dead end in an orchard. If you approach the Preserve eastbound on Foothill Road\, you must make a u-turn at Kimball Road to access McVittie Place and the Preserve. \n\nThis event is presented by the Ventura Land Trust.
\nREGISTER\nPlease join me and my wife Rondia for the second in a series of leisurely evening strolls on the historic wetland that is now the Ojai Meadows Preserve on Wednesday\, May 18\, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. \nBefore the walk\, I will have copies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, available for sale and signing. No dogs or smoking\, please. \nPlease use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal link at bottom of the page to secure your space. Then use the PayPal button at the bottom of the page to secure your space. Paid registrants will receive a confirmation email with all necessary info a few days before the walk.  \nREGISTER\nIn December 2017 the Koenigstein Fire ravaged Matilija Canyon\, leaving a barren landscape of ash and black sticks. Join us as we celebrate the lushness of the 5th spring since then with an Earth Day Herb Walk on Saturday\, April 23\, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.. This will be our first time back since 2016 as we’ve patiently waited for the vegetation and wildlife to return. The walk will take place northwest of Ojai on Matilija Creek\, deep in the mountains of the Matilija Wilderness in Los Padres National Forest. Matilija Wilderness (29\,600 acres in the USFS Ojai Ranger District) was established in 1992 by the Los Padres Condor Range and River Protection Act. \nWe will cover approximately 1 mile each way on a mostly level trail with very little elevation change through chaparral and riparian settings. The terrain includes two short creek crossings. Otherwise\, we will be on a wide\, level\, dirt road most of the time. This walk is suitable for physically fit beginning hikers with the proper footwear. The day will begin with a caravan from the Maricopa Plaza parking lot in Ojai at 9:00 am and return there by 12:30 pm. Along the way we’ll take a relaxing snack break on the upper north fork of Matilija Creek. \nWe’ll identify useful wild herbs and their plant families and explore the many ways native plants have been used by the Indigenous Chumash\, herbalists\, campers and gardeners for food\, medicine\, wildcrafting\, survival\, landscaping and more. The canyon is home to White Sage\, Coastal Sagebrush\, Yerba Santa\, Matilija Poppy\, California Bay and many more wonderful and useful native plants. \nA field of White Sage in Matilija Canyon \nSwallowtail on Yerba Santa flowers in Matilija Canyon \nWe will also look for birds\, butterflies and other wildlife and discuss the ecology of the Southern Los Padres National Forest. As always\, we’ll cover traditional and modern methods of sustainable foraging\, resource conservation\, and mindful enjoyment of nature. \nThis walk is presented under a Special Use Permit from the U.S. Forest Service designed for guides who provide recreational and interpretive services to the public. After the hike participants will receive a detailed follow-up email including a list of all plants identified. \nThe cost is $35. Senior\, student\, and child discounts are available by request.
\nREGISTER\nPlease join me and my wife Rondia for a leisurely evening stroll on the historic wetland that is now the Ojai Meadows Preserve on Wednesday\, April 13\, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. We’ll identify native plants that have been used for centuries by the Chumash and other Indigenous people of California for shelter\, food\, medicine\, fiber\, ceremony and much more. Gardeners will see how these plants can be used in home yard and garden landscapes. We’ll see first-hand the many benefits of the preservation and restoration of this special piece of land by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy  (OVLC). Thanks to the recent rain\, there is ample water in the pond at the low point in the wetland. We’ll see waterfowl and typical wetland plants such as tules. \nBefore the walk\, I will have copies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, available for sale and signing. Note: Online payment includes a PayPal fee. If you prefer\, when you register you can request instructions for mailing a payment of $100/person.\nIf the event sells out\, PayPal will not accept your payment. If that happens\, be sure to click on the REGISTER button below to sign up for the waiting list. If spaces become available they will be filled based on date and time of waiting list signup. \nREGISTER\n\nPlease join me and special guest Professor Emeritus Jim Adams of USC School of Pharmacy for a Spring Medicinal Plant Workshop in Ojai on Sunday\, April 3\, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dr. Adams has been a frequent and popular contributor to my events for the past nine years. This workshop is based on his ground-breaking pharmacological studies on local native plants and his personal commitment to sharing the traditional medicinal practices he learned from Chumash healer Cecilia Garcia. Jim will be joined by plant educator Enrique Villaseñor and acupuncturist Michelle Wong\, co-authors with him of Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West: Cultural and Scientific Basis for Their Use\, Fourth Edition\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nThe workshop will take place at Euterpe Farms. In the morning\, Dr. Adams will identify and discuss the medicinal and spiritual uses of a variety of native plants. The afternoon hands-on preparation session will be held outdoors as well\, in the water station “tienda.” After the workshop\, participants will receive a follow-up email with a complete list of all plants that are identified or utilized as well as recipes and other info. \n\n\n \n\n\nThe morning outing from 9 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. will be a slow-paced walk around the property which  borders the Ventura River Preserve. It will involve stopping and standing for discussion for periods of time. A lightweight campstool could be useful for those who are uncomfortable standing.\n\n\n \n\n\nAfter a 1/2 hour break\, the afternoon session from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. will focus on preparing seasonal edible and medicinal products from wild foraged plant material. Participants will be able to soak their feet in pain-relieving black sage tea and go home with their own jar of sagebrush liniment that they prepared themselves.. Seasonal plants and products to be featured may include\, among others:\n\n\n\nElderflowers\nWhite Sage\nSagebrush liniment\nBlack Sage foot soak\nNopal (Prickly-Pear) smoothie\n\n\n\nAt 3:00 p.m. Dr. Adams\, Enrique\, and Michelle will sign copies of their book and I will sign copies of mine\, Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants.\n\n  \n\n\nABOUT JAMES ADAMS\, PH.D: \nDr. Adams brings to Ojai a wealth of scientific knowledge and field experience as well as a singular perspective on herbal medicine. As he tells it\, “My family came to Virginia in 1635 and has always survived by using American Indian healing. On the frontier\, there were no doctors. American Indian healing was better than European medicine anyway. I continue this tradition.”\n\n\n \n\n\nDr. Adams is the co-author\, with Michelle Wong and Enrique Villaseñor\, of the fourth edition of the groundbreaking book\, Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West: Cultural and Scientific Basis for Their Use. The cultural portion is based on the teachings of Cecilia Garcia and the scientific portion on Dr. Adams’ laboratory studies. It can be purchased beforehand at that link and will also be available for purchase and signing at the event.\n\n\n \n\n\nAs an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Southern California for 32 years\, Dr. Adams taught  pharmacy students\, medical students\, doctors and other healthcare professionals while researching the natural pharmaceutical compounds in native plants. He has over 200 publications.\n\n\n \n\n\nRunning parallel with his academic career\, Dr. Adams has worked with the Chumash people since 1998 and studied Chumash healing with Cecilia Garcia for almost 15 years. In addition to the book\,  they collaborated on 30 journal articles. Jim is now the carrier of the healing knowledge passed to him by his teacher.\n\n\n  \n\n“Humans have used plant medicines ever since humans came into existence\, about 200\,000 years ago\,” Dr. Adams explains in Healing with Medicinal Plants. “That means that our ancestors experienced an intense natural selection. Those who responded to plant medicines survived and passed their genes on. We are the products of this natural selection. Our bodies are designed to respond to plant medicines.”\n\n\n\n\nLeft to right\, co-presenters Enrique Villaseñor\, Jim Adams\, and Michelle Wong introducing the Summer 2020 Medicinal Plant Workshop at Euterpe Farms in Ojai.\n\n  \nHere is an excellent 2017 article about Dr. Adams from USCStorySpace.com: “A Scientist’s Calling to Practice Chumash Healing.”\nREGISTRATION: \n\n\n\nPlease note: This workshop will go on RAIN OR SHINE with the exception of a heavy downpour in the morning and/or a 100% chance of heavy rain that day. No dogs or smoking\, please. \nPaid registrants will receive a confirmation email with all necessary info\, including weather forecast and parking directions\, a few days prior to the workshop. They also will receive a follow-up email afterwards with a list of all plants identified and used\, recipes\, and more. \nThe cost for the workshop\, including all materials\, is $100. Please use the REGISTER link at top and bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal button. Please note: online payment includes PayPal fee. If you prefer to mail a check\, please let me know when you register. \nPlease be sure to use the REGISTER link below or at the top of the page before clicking on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. SUMMARY:Wildflower Hike at Harmon Canyon Preserve
DESCRIPTION:This event is presented by the Ventura Land Trust. Please visit this page at their website to register for the hike.\nFrom the VLT webpage: Ventura Land Trust is pleased to partner with renowned native plant guide and educator Lanny Kaufer for a wildflower hike at Harmon Canyon Preserve on Saturday\, March 26th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. \nKaufer is well-known in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties for his Herb Walks\, interpretive native plant walks and nature hikes\, which he began leading more than 40 years ago in 1976. This will be the first hike led by Kaufer at Harmon Canyon Preserve. \nKaufer’s hike will include plant identification and information for the beginning to experienced botanist. The hike will cover approximately two miles in Harmon Canyon Preserve. Wildflowers such as wild hyacinths\, lupine\, Douglas’ fiddlenecks\, California peonies\, and threatened mariposa lilies make their home in Harmon Canyon Preserve’s conserved 2\,123 acres of land\, amid roughly 1\,000 acres of endangered coastal sage scrub. Rain-fed wildflowers are blooming in earnest at Harmon Canyon Preserve after lying dormant through recent drought years. \nLanny Kaufer is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants. The book will be available for sale and signing after the walk. \nAll walk participants should bring a water bottle and wear sturdy shoes\, long pants\, a hat\, and sunscreen. \n\nHere is a Google map and directions to Harmon Canyon Preserve. Please look closely and note that the map takes you to a right turn onto McVittie Place before turning right into the Preserve. Do not turn right just before Mcvittie Place at the sign saying 7511 Foothill Rd. That driveway will take you to a dead end in an orchard. \n\nThis event is presented by the Ventura Land Trust. Please visit this page at the Ventura Land Trust website to register for the hike.

SUMMARY:Know Your Native Plants (An Ojai Plant Identification Hike)
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nPlease use the REGISTER link at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal button at the bottom of the page to secure your space. The PayPal cost includes their fee. If you prefer\, when you register you may request instructions for mailing in a check for $35/person. \nAre you one of the many hikers who walk our Southern California trails and wonder what is growing and flowering around you? Maybe you don’t care that much about their uses? Just want to know what they are? You are not alone. On Saturday\, March 19\, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon\, I will lead a native plant identification hike designed for you on the Rice Canyon Trail on the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy’s Ventura River Preserve. This will not be my typical herb walk discussing edible and medicinal plants. We will simply identify native plants on the trail\, most of which can be found throughout Southern California. Then\, afterwards\, you will receive a list by email of all the plants we saw\, including their common names\, scientific names\, and the plant families to which they belong. \nWith a helping hand and/or the use of walking sticks\, we’ll boulder-cross or wade through a narrow\, shallow stretch of the Ventura River and head up toward the shade of the canyon. We’ll meet a diverse group of plants representing the Coastal Sage Scrub\, Chaparral\, and Riparian Woodland plant communities of Southern California. Other than the short water crossing\, this is an easy-to-moderate hike of 2 miles round-trip with sections of mild elevation gain and a few short hills to climb. We’ll stop often to identify native plants. We’ll also discuss conservation concerns and the local ecology\, including the recovery of this area since the December 2017 Koenigstein fire. \nYes\, I will have my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, available for purchase and signing before the walk to use as a field guide and\, yes\, you’re encouraged to ask questions\, but I will spend minimal time talking about that aspect of the plants\, focusing instead on their identifying characteristics and their role in the ecosystem. \nThe book that I recommend for identifying plants on this hike (and on all our local trails) is Milt McAuley’s Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains. It turns out that every plant we will see in this canyon west of Ojai is also found in the Santa Monica Mountains. If Milt had named his book Wildflowers of Southern California\, that would have been a more accurate and appealing name\, at least for those who know that\, botanically\, every flowering plant is a wildflower\, whether or not it has a showy flower. I will have that book with me\, too\, so that you can purchase it without paying for shipping and handling. You may be happy to know that in 2022 I dropped the price of this book from $19.95 to $14.95. \nPlease note: This hike will go on RAIN OR SHINE with the exception of a heavy downpour that morning and/or a forecast of an 80-100% chance of heavy rain that day. No dogs or smoking\, please. \nThe cost for the hike is $35/person. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy\, stewards of this Preserve\, for trail maintenance. \nPlease use the REGISTER link at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal button at the bottom of the page to secure your space. The PayPal cost includes their fee. If you prefer\, when you register you may request instructions for mailing in a check for $35/person. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Green Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike & After-Party
DESCRIPTION:Please use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal link at bottom of the page to secure your space. The PayPal cost includes their fee. If you prefer\, when you register you may request instructions for mailing in a check for $35/person. \nREGISTER\nIn honor of St. Patrick’s Day\, I’ll lead a Green Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike on Thursday evening\, March 17\, from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. We’ll gradually walk about 1.5 miles on a well used dirt road with gradual elevation gain to the vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the sunset and moonrise. The sun will sink below the horizon at about 6:45 p.m. and the full moon will rise at about 7:10 p.m.\, giving us a nice window of time to take it all in. Registrants will receive instructions on where to park\, what to bring\, etc. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the “wearin’ of the green.” \nAfter witnessing the setting of the sun and rising of the moon\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by moonlight and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead between 7:45 and 8:00 p.m. \nThen at 8:00 p.m. you’re invited to join me and Rondia on Bryant Street at Ojai Valley Brewery‘s heated outdoor dining area where brewmaster Jeremy Haffner and his staff will be pouring his amazing locally-sourced beers\, ales. stouts and non-alcoholic beverages. They will have a St. Paddy’s Day party going on with music and Irish food. PLEASE NOTE: The admission fee for the hike does not include food and beverages at Ojai Valley Brewery. \nWe’ll stop along the trail to meet some valuable green plants including: \nElderberry\nCoastal Sagebrush\nPrickly-Pear Cactus\nHorehound\nChia Sage\nBlack Sage and\nPurple Sage \nJeremy’s brews at Ojai Valley Brewery change with the seasons and reflect the plants of Ojai. Three staples you’re likely to find on his list any time of year are Sugar Bush IPA\, brewed with wild local Ojai “Sugar Bush” sumac; White Pixie Ale\, brewed with Pixie tangerine zests and orchard blossoms; and an amazing Chaparral Ale flavored and bittered with white sage\, black sage\, and local sagebrush instead of the usual hops. Jeremy describes it as “built to mimic the scent on Shelf Road.” That’s where we’ll be walking! Non-alcoholic offerings also change with the seasons and may include an Elderflower-Blackberry Spritzer. \nI will have copies of my new book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, with me for sale and signing. The book is also available at Ojai Valley Brewery. \nREGISTRATION INFO:\nThe cost for the hike is $35/person. Senior\, student and child discounts are available by request. Paid registrants will receive a confirmation email a few days prior to the event with all necessary info\, including what to bring\, weather forecast\, and directions to the trailhead. SUMMARY:Outdoor Survival Skills with Christopher Nyerges
DESCRIPTION:This event is full. Please be sure to use the REGISTER link below or at the bottom of the page to sign up for the waiting list. Spaces that may come up will be filled in the order of receipt of registration forms.\nREGISTER\nJoin me and famed author/forager/survivalist Christopher Nyerges on Saturday\, March 12\, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Ojai for an Outdoor Survival Skills workshop based on the book of the same name by Larry Dean Olsen. Christopher recently edited the new 2021 7th Edition of this classic. \nChristopher writes of Olsen: “Anyone who has been teaching outdoor survival skills for any length of time has undoubtedly heard of Larry Dean Olsen…After Olsen graduated from Brigham Young University\, he began teaching survival field trips through the college’s Continuing Education Division in 1968\, sharing his love for the outdoors\, and his intense interest in the skills of the local indigenous peoples…As part of his outdoor training\, he would take students into the desert of the Great Basin area and live off the land for a week or longer. They had to learn how to eat wild plants\, trap small game\, make fire with local materials\, build a shelter\, weave sandals\, find water\, and more. It was a grueling adventure. He wrote Outdoor Survival Skills\, first published in 1967\, which described all the survival skills he’d been teaching. His book has long been considered the definitive classic book on the subject. The book has been updated every few years and remained in print all these years.…Larry was perhaps the most visible person teaching and sharing the extreme art of living off the land.  It is not an overstatement to say that everyone today teaching these skills has some lineage\, direct or indirect\, that leads back to Larry Dean Olsen.” \nParticipants will: \n\nlearn to identify edible and medicinal plants of the season\npractice making cordage and soap from yucca leaves\nlearn the most basic primitive fire-starting method: the hand drill\nlearn principles of finding and purifying water\, especially in dry areas\n\nTime permitting\, participants may also: \n\nlearn a few simple animal traps\, such as snares and deadfalls\nlearn some very basic shelters for emergencies\n\nThere may be other activities\, depending on seasonal foods and supplies available. \nThe workshop will begin with a morning plant walk on Euterpe Farms\, overlooking the Ventura River Preserve. The afternoon workshop will take place under oak trees. Everyone will have a chance to participate in all activities. \nChristopher Nyerges is an author\, forager\, survivalist and ethnobotanist with a lifelong interest in how native peoples lived off the land. He has been teaching classes and leading field trips since 1974 to over 40\,000 students. Nyerges has authored nearly two dozen books\, including Foraging California\, Guide to Wild Foods\,  Nuts and Berries of California\, How to Survive Anywhere\, Extreme Simplicity\, and many others. As mentioned above\, Chicago Review Press\, the publishers of Larry Dean Olsen’s Outdoor Survival Skills\, asked Christopher to lightly edit the 7th edition of this classic book and add color photos and a new foreword. He most recently was the editor of American Survival Guide magazine\, and served as editor of Wilderness Way magazine for 7 years. He has written several thousand newspaper and magazine articles in such publications as the Los Angeles Times\, Pasadena Star News\, Pasadena Weekly\, Whole Life Times\, Countryside\, Mother Earth News\, Acres USA\, American  Survival Guide\, and others. \nChristopher has appeared on the late Huell Howser’s public television series\, KCET’s “Life and Times\,” and National Geographic’s “Doomsday Preppers.” For two years\, he appeared on Fox TV’s “X Show\,” where he demonstrated survival skills on the streets of Los Angeles. He currently serves as a consultant to the “Naked and Afraid” show on Discovery.  Christopher Nyerges’ web site is SchoolofSelf-Reliance.com. \nREGISTRATION INFO:\nPlease note: This workshop will go on RAIN OR SHINE with the exception of a heavy downpour in the morning and/or a 100% chance of heavy rain that day. No dogs (other than service dogs) and no smoking\, please. \nPaid registrants will receive a confirmation email with all necessary info\, including weather forecast and parking directions\, a few days prior to the workshop.  They also will receive a follow-up email afterwards with a list of all plants identified\, recipes\, valuable links and more. \nThe cost for the workshop\, including all materials\, is $85 for adults and $45 for children under 18\, one child per adult. \nThis event is full. DESCRIPTION:This event is full. Please use the REGISTER button to be notified about future workshops. \nREGISTER\nAs you walk the meadows\, mountains\, and valleys of Southern California during our brief rainy season\, do you find yourself wishing you knew more about the elusive mushrooms you encounter? Turn your wishing into learning on Sunday\, February 27\, 2022\, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. when Herb Walks with Lanny Kaufer hosts an encore workshop with Jess Starwood\, author of Mushroom Wanderland: A Forager’s Guide to Finding\, Identifying\, and Using More Than 25 Wild Fungi!. (Just click on that link to order the book now.) We’ll visit two unique habitats known to be home to several species of fungi and native plants. Of course\, we can’t guarantee which mushrooms we’ll find as that is unpredictable\, dependent on rainfall\, weather\, and other factors. Not to worry\, though. Jess will bring dried samples from her pantry to fill in the gaps. \nWe’ll start out at 9 a.m. with a car caravan from Euterpe Farms in Ojai to Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center. From there\, we’ll walk through the creekside habitat and beyond in the campground and on the Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail. Then we’ll return to Euterpe Farms for some plant ID\, mushroom foraging\, and a wild food lunch demonstration prepared by Jess\, followed by the afternoon workshop. At 3 pm. Jess and I will sign our respective 2021 books and my mobile bookshop will be open to purchase either title and many more. \nABOUT JESS STARWOOD:\nJess Starwood is a forager\, plant-based chef\, and herbalist. SUMMARY:February Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike & After-Party
DESCRIPTION:Photo of almost full moon rising over Topa Topa Bluffs courtesy of Joe P. Powers \nPlease use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal link at bottom of the page to secure your space. The PayPal cost includes their fee. If you prefer\, you may request instructions for mailing in a check for $35/person. \nREGISTER\nOn Wednesday evening\, February 16\, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m.\, I’ll lead a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the sunset and moonrise. The sun will set at about 5:30 p.m. and the full moon will rise at about 6:10 p.m.\, giving us a nice window of time to take it all in. Following the hike is an optional “after-party” at the Ojai Valley Brewery. The cost of food and beverages is not included in the price of the hike. \nRegistrants will receive instructions on where to park. From the trailhead we’ll gradually walk about 1.5 miles on a well used dirt road with gradual elevation gain to the vista point\, stopping along the way to meet some valuable native plants including: \nCoastal Sagebrush\nToyon\nHorehound\nElderberry and\nPurple Sage \nAfter witnessing the setting of the sun and rising of the moon\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead between 6:45 and 7:00 p.m. \nThen at 7:00 p.m. you’re invited to join me and Rondia on Bryant Street at Ojai Valley Brewery’s heated outdoor dining area where brewmaster Jeremy Haffner and his staff will be pouring his amazing locally-sourced beers\, ales. stouts and non-alcoholic beverages. \nJeremy’s brews change with the seasons and reflect the plants of Ojai. Three staples you’re likely to find on his list any time of year are Sugar Bush IPA\, brewed with wild local Ojai “Sugar Bush” Sumac; White Pixie Ale\, brewed with Pixie tangerine zests and orchard blossoms; and an amazing Chaparral Ale flavored and bittered with White and Black Sage and local Sagebrush instead of the usual Hops. Jeremy describes it as “built to mimic the scent on Shelf Road.” That’s where we’ll be walking! Non-alcoholic offerings also change with the seasons and may include an Elderflower-Blackberry Spritzer. Afterwards\, they also will receive a follow-up email with a list of all plants and wildlife seen. \nNo dogs or smoking\, please. Light rain will not cancel. Heavy rain will. \nDue to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases we will return to the 2020-21 safety protocol including masks\, social distancing\, and digital temperature checks on arrival. \nPlease use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal link at bottom of the page to secure your space.
