SUMMARY:Full Pink Moon Nature Hike
DESCRIPTION:Full Pink Moon Nature Hike\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Pink Phlox moon of April \n\n\n\n4/1/26: REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED FOR THIS EVENT\n\n\nJUMP TO REGISTRATION\nOn Wednesday evening\, April 1\, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.\, Rondia and I will lead a Full Pink Moon Nature Hike to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the nearly simultaneous sunset and moonrise. Both will happen around 7:20 p.m. The April full moon is the closest to the Spring Equinox (March 20) so the moonrise and sunset will appear opposite each other at about the same time. \nSPOILER: The moon will not actually appear pink as pictured in the fanciful image above. The name comes from the bright pink wildflowers of the Phlox family\, like our local Prickly Phlox (Linanthus californicus)\, that are native to North America and bloom around the time of April’s full moon. \nPrickly Phlox (Linanthus californicus)\nWe’ll meet at the trailhead at 5:15 p.m. for a 5:30 p.m. start\, then gradually hike about 1.5 miles to the viewing site\, experiencing some elevation gain on a well-worn\, dirt fire road with uneven footing in places. Along the way we’ll stop to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants\, including: \nBlack & Purple SageBlue ElderberryCoastal SagebrushPassionflowerPrickly-Pear andHorehound \nWe’ll also identify Poison Oak and look for Prickly Phlox. \nAfter witnessing the sunset and moonrise\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead at about 8:00 p.m. I will have copies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, for sale and signing before and after the hike. \nHeavy rain or chance of thunderstorms will cancel event. \nIf there is interest we can meet up afterwards at Ojai Valley Brewery for an after-party. \nMy 2021 book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, will be available at the trailhead for sale and signing.\nPaid registrants will receive a confirmation email a few days prior to the event with all necessary info\, including what to bring\, weather forecast\, and directions to the trailhead. Afterwards\, they also will receive a follow-up email with a list of all plants and wildlife seen. \nIn addition to the adult tickets ($35)\, tickets for students 13-17 ($25) and children 6-12 ($15) are offered below. One supervising adult must accompany each child 12 years old or younger. Senior discount is available by request. \nNo dogs or smoking\, please.  \nMY WEATHER POLICY: Walks and hikes will go on RAIN OR SHINE unless there is a steady downpour on the morning of the event\, probability of thunderstorm\, or a solid forecast of either the day before. Light rain or drizzle will not result in cancellation on my part. I will update registrants by email and text\, as needed\, and issue refunds if I need to cancel because of the weather. \nMY CANCELLATION POLICY: I will refund your payment if you notify me up to 72 hours (3 days) before the start of the event. After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee. \n \n\n\nREGISTRATION\n\n\n\nPlease REGISTER HERE FIRST before completing payment below.\n\n\n\n	Notice: JavaScript is required for this content.\n\n\n \n\n\n \n \n \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nIf you haven’t already up above\, please REGISTER FIRST before completing payment below.\n\n\n\nThere are several ticket options. Please choose the one you qualify for. \n\n\n\nNote: Online payment includes a PayPal fee. If you prefer\, when you register you can request instructions for mailing a payment of $35/adult\, $25/student\, or $15/child (one per adult) as long as there is still time for mail delivery.Cancellation policy: I will refund your payment if you notify me up to 72 hours (3 days) before the start of the event. After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee.

SUMMARY:Rose Valley Falls Herb Walk (POSTPONED)
DESCRIPTION:Rose Valley Falls Herb Walk (POSTPONED)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRose Valley Falls\, June 13\, 2015 Photo: Lanny Kaufer \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: Out of an abundance of caution\, this walk has been postponed due to possibility of thunderstorm activity. A new date will be posted soon. LK\n\n\n\nJUMP TO REGISTRATION\n\n\n\nPlease join me for an Herb Walk to Rose Valley Falls on Saturday\, April 11\, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. You will experience a local scenic wonder 300 feet high and learn about Rose Valley’s diverse plant communities. After a drive up California Scenic Highway 33\, the outing will begin with a stop at Upper Rose Valley Lake\, followed by a walk through Rose Valley Campground and a shaded walk in the forest of less than 1/2 mile each way to the Falls. \n\n\n\nWe will see and smell aromatic California Bay trees\, see native Brookfoam and Maidenhair Ferns growing right on the Falls\, and search for the elusive Sweet Cicely and California Violet herbs on the trail to the Falls. It’s a great time of year to see a variety of spring wildflowers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRose Valley Falls seen from downstream in Rose Valley. The tall conifers on the mountainside are Bigcone Douglas-Fir. Photo: Lanny Kaufer \n\n\n\nThis walk is presented under a Special Use Permit from the Ojai Ranger District Office of the U.S. Forest Service designed for guides who provide recreational and interpretive services to the public. As I do on all my walks and hikes\, I will demonstrate and discuss the modern and ancient uses of wild plants. Poisonous plants will also be identified. \n\n\n\nTrailside discussion will include topics such as the difference between native and naturalized plants\, the role of humans in the ecological balance\, sustainable foraging\, and other topics generated by the participants. I’ve been leading informative and entertaining Herb Walks and Nature Hikes to Rose Valley Falls and other locations in Southern California since 1976. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe day will begin with a caravan/carpool from the Maricopa Plaza parking lot at 9:00 a.m. and return there by 12:30 p.m. The cost is $25 for all ages.  Children 12-and-under are free\, one per adult\, by prior arrangement. No dogs or smoking\, please. Registrants will receive a confirmation email beforehand with all necessary info and a follow-up email after the walk with a plant list and other info. \n\n\n\nMy 2021 book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, along with the rest of my mobile bookshop will be available at the meeting place in the morning for sale and signing. \n\n\n\nWeather policy: Walks and hikes will go on RAIN OR SHINE unless there is a steady downpour on the morning of the event\, probability of thunderstorm\, or a solid forecast of either the day before. Light rain or drizzle typically will not result in cancellation on my part. I will update registrants by email and text\, as needed\, and issue refunds if I need to cancel because of the weather. \n\n\n\nDog Policy: Years of experience have taught me that dogs on herb walks\, even on a leash\, are not a good fit. They can transfer poison oak oil on their fur\, may accidentally frighten another hiker who has a fear of dogs\, or may end up in a confrontation with another dog\, all despite the best intentions of the owner and the pet. That being said\, I do allow certified service dogs \n\n\n\nCancellation policy: I will refund your payment if you notify me up to 72 hours (3 days) before the start of the event. After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee.  \n\n\n\nREGISTRATION\n\n\n\nPlease REGISTER HERE FIRST before completing payment below.\n\n\n\n	Notice: JavaScript is required for this content.\n\n\n \n\n\n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nIf you haven’t already\, please REGISTER FIRST above before completing payment below.\n\n\n\nThere is just one all-ages ticket option for this event. \n\n\n\nNote: Online payment includes a PayPal fee. If you prefer\, when you register you can request instructions for mailing a payment of $25 for all ages (one child 12-and-under free per adult) as long as there is still time for mail delivery.

SUMMARY:Sisar Creek Nature Hike
DESCRIPTION:Sisar Creek Nature Hike\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Sisar Canyon Trail. Photo: Lanny Kaufer \n\n\n\n4/18/26: Registration is now closed for this event.\n\n\n\nJUMP TO REGISTRATION\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n🎧 Click below: Full-length audio of “Sisar Creek” by the April Hendrix Band \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis beautiful oak-forested trail along Sisar Creek is one of my all-time favorites in the Ojai Valley. It’s actually located in the Upper Ojai Valley at the foot of the monumental Topa Topa Bluffs. Please join me for a Nature Hike there on Saturday\, April 18\, from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. We will see and smell aromatic California Bay trees along with several other riparian trees\, including Bigleaf Maple\, not often found at this lower elevation. We’ll search for the elusive and uncommon Sweet Cicely and identify a wide variety of edible and medicinal plants. Expect butterflies; the spring wildflowers are busting out all over. \n\n\n\nThis hike is fairly easy but I classify it as a “nature hike” instead of an “herb walk” because of elevation gain at the beginning and a short creek crossing across boulders or through the shallow water. \n\n\n\nI operate in the Los Padres National Forest under a Special Use Permit from the Ojai Ranger District Office of the U.S. Forest Service designed for guides who provide recreational and interpretive services to the public. As I do on all my walks and hikes\, I will demonstrate and discuss the modern and ancient uses of wild plants. No dogs or smoking\, please. Registrants will receive a confirmation email with directions and all necessary info about a week before the hike and a follow-up email afterwards with a plant list and other info. \n\n\n\nMy 2021 book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, along with the rest of my mobile bookshop\, will be available where we park in the morning for sale and signing. \n\n\n\nWeather policy: Walks and hikes will go on RAIN OR SHINE unless there is a steady downpour on the morning of the event\, probability of thunderstorm\, or a solid forecast of either the day before. SUMMARY:"Wild Food and Medicine of Early California:" A 2-Part Experiential Class for OLLI
DESCRIPTION:What was it like for Indigenous Californians and early settlers to find and prepare plant foods and medicinal home remedies? This immersive\, hands-on course invites you to find out by stepping into a “village-for-a-day” experience. Over two interactive sessions\, participants will work together to process flavorful black walnuts and to prepare a pain-relieving sagebrush liniment. Along the way\, you will learn about regional plants\, seasonal rhythms\, and the cultural knowledge that sustained communities for generations. Class size is limited to 30 participants. There will be a small additional fee for course materials. \n\n\n\nThis OLLI class\, taught by me\, is offered on two consecutive Wednesdays beginning April 22 and ending April 29 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Each week’s class will include a one-hour “herb walk” on the campus to meet the native plant community in the flesh\, so to speak\, and learn about their uses. The second hour will be an outdoor\, hands-on workshop \n\n\n\nEnrollment began March 16. For more information and registration\, please visit OLLI at CSUCI. I will not be handling any registration or payment for this class. \n\n\n\nThe Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at CSUCI is a branch of the Extended University – originally designed for adults over 50 but now open to students of all ages – that offers college-level noncredit courses with no assignments or grades. In their own words\, “OLLI at CSUCI is dedicated to enriching the lives of lifelong learners by providing opportunities for intellectual stimulation and social connection designed for adults aged 50 and above. We foster a love of learning through university-level courses\, social & educational activities\, and special events.”

SUMMARY:Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike
DESCRIPTION:Full moon\, May 2023. Photo: Joe P. SUMMARY:Nature Preserve Walk at Taft Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF)\, stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. They are handling all registrations. To register for the event\, please visit this page or email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com.  \n\n\n\nRegistrants will receive an email from CEF with detailed directions. Please do not try to find the venue by using other maps or GPS. Allow plenty of time to find the venue and to make your way up the miles-long driveway. \n\n\n\nPlease join me for one of my occasional Nature Preserve Walks at Taft Gardens on Saturday\, June 13\, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.\, meeting at 8:45 a.m. We will explore trails through the wild parts of the property\, identify and discuss native plants\, and observe birds and animal tracks in the context of local ecology.  \n\n\n\nThis event is a perfect fit with my personal mission to open a space for people to connect with the natural world\, starting with the plant kingdom. The diversity of plant communities and native species make Taft Nature Preserve the ideal place. Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve was featured in an L. A. Times article on “The 16 Most Beautiful and Inviting Public Gardens in Southern California” and included in the RedBook Magazine list of “The 12 Most Beautiful Botanical Gardens in the United States.” \n\n\n\nThe $35 cost includes a $10 donation to benefit the CEF\, the non-profit steward of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve.  \n\n\n\nI will have my mobile bookshop onsite after the walk\, including my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, and Milt McAuley’s classic Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains which features every plant we will see. \n\n\n\nPlease plan on leaving dogs and cigarettes at home. Thanks!

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Nature Hike on Pine Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Above: The Channel Islands seen from Pine Mountain. Photo: Lanny Kaufer \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJUMP TO REGISTRATION\n\n\n\nIf you’ve ever walked or hiked with me\, you’ve probably heard me speak of the special beauty of Pine Mountain. Experience it for yourself on our annual Summer Solstice Nature Hike on the Reyes Peak Trail. On Saturday\, June 20\, we’ll visit some of the most spectacular scenery and habitat that Ventura County has to offer just when many late spring wildflowers are blooming up there at an elevation of 7000 feet(!).  According to Craig Carey\, author of Hiking and Backpacking Santa Barbara and Ventura\, the Reyes Peak Trail along the northern slope of the peak is “quite simply one of the most beautiful stretches in the southern Los Padres.” \n\n\n\nThe outing will start at 9:00 a.m. with a car caravan of about 35 miles up Highway 33 from the Maricopa Plaza\, (1207 Maricopa Highway\, Ojai\, CA 93023) to the Reyes Peak trailhead. The final 5.5 miles are on a narrow\, winding paved road and the very last half-mile is dirt. Trucks or SUV’s are preferred for the last stretch but most passenger cars with high clearance can also make the drive. \n\n\n\nWe will start walking into the Sespe Wilderness from the trailhead (where there is a restroom) at about 10:30 a.m.\, stop for lunch (not provided) in the forest\, and return to the trailhead by 3:30 p.m.\, arriving back at the Maricopa Plaza by 4:00 p.m. We will hike on a well-used trail through Mixed Conifer Forest habitat\, stopping often to identify and discuss native plants\, birds and wildlife. \n\n\n\nThis intermediate level hike is suitable for moderately experienced hikers or physically fit beginners. There will be some elevation gain and loss skirting the north side of Reyes Peak\, sometimes traversing steep hillsides on a narrow trail. The total hiking distance will be about 3 miles. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: Those with respiratory or circulatory issues possibly affected by altitude should consult with a physician before attempting this hike. \n\n\n\nWeather and marine layer permitting\, we will have panoramic views of the Cuyama Valley to the north and the Channel Islands to the south from the “sky island” of Pine Mountain and Reyes Peak.  This hike is another in a series of backcountry walks and hikes under an Operating Permit from the U.S. Forest Service designed for guides who provide recreational and interpretive services to the public. After the hike participants will receive a detailed follow-up email including a list of all plants identified. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: Light rain will not cancel. Heavy rain or thunderstorms will. Once you register you will receive weather updates\, directions and other info about what to wear\, etc. No dogs or smoking\, please. \n\n\n\nThe cost for the hike is $45/person. Qualifying full-time students (13+) can attend for $35. Children 6-12 (one per adult) can attend for $25. Kids 5 and under are free (one per adult)\, subject to approval. \n\n\n\nMy 2021 book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, and the rest of my mobile bookshop will be available at the meeting place in the morning for sale and signing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Lanny describes the needles of a White Fir sapling on the Reyes Peak Trail.\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Rondia (center) and friends enjoying lunch. Both will happen around 8:00 p.m. Although the exact time of the full moon is on Monday\, June 29 at 4:56 p.m.\, it is not visible then. And It rises too late that night to schedule a hike. So June 28 is the ideal time to view it in its fullness.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll meet at the trailhead at 5:45 p.m. for a 6:00 p.m. start\, then gradually hike about 1.5 miles to the viewing site\, experiencing some elevation gain on a well-worn\, dirt fire road with uneven footing in places. Along the way we’ll stop to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants\, including: \n\n\n\nBlack & Purple SageBlue ElderberryCoastal SagebrushPassionfruitPrickly-Pear andYucca \n\n\n\nWe’ll also identify Poison Oak. \n\n\n\nAfter witnessing the sunset and moonrise\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead at about 8:30 p.m. I will have copies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, for sale and signing before and after the hike. \n\n\n\nHeavy rain or chance of thunderstorms will cancel event. \n\n\n\nIf there is interest we can meet up at Ojai Valley Brewery for an after-party. \n\n\n\nMy 2021 book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, will be available at the trailhead for sale and signing.\n\n\n\nPaid registrants will receive a confirmation email a few days prior to the event with all necessary info\, including what to bring\, weather forecast\, and directions to the trailhead.
