SUMMARY:Potrero John Creek Nature Hike
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nAre you ready to immerse yourself in wild nature? Join me Sunday\, May 22\, for a Nature Hike on Potrero John Creek\, deep in the Sespe Wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest. Beginning at 9 a.m.\, a 20-mile car caravan will take us from Ojai to the trailhead. We’ll return to Ojai around 3 p.m. Starting our hike at an elevation of 3700 feet\, we’ll meet a diverse group of plants representing the upper Chaparral and Riparian Woodland plant communities of Southern California. This will be an easy-to-moderate hike of about 3 miles round-trip with sections of mild elevation gain and a few short creek crossings. We’ll stop often to identify edible\, medicinal\, and otherwise useful plants. We can expect to see a number of plants not found at lower elevations\, including Bigcone Douglas-Fir\, Incense-Cedar\, Yerba Santa\, Mariposa Lily\, Giant Stinging Nettle\, and others. \nBigcone Douglas-Fir tips. If you prefer\, when you register you may request instructions for mailing a check for $25/person. \nREGISTER\nPlease join me and my wife Rondia for the second in a series of leisurely evening strolls on the historic wetland that is now the Ojai Meadows Preserve on Wednesday\, May 18\, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. We’ll identify native plants that have been used for centuries by the Chumash and other Indigenous people of California for shelter\, food\, medicine\, fiber\, ceremony and much more. Gardeners will discover how these plants can be used in home yard and garden landscapes. We’ll view first-hand the many benefits of the preservation and restoration of this special piece of land by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy  (OVLC). In the pond at the low spot in the wetland\, we’ll likely see waterfowl and typical wetland plants such as tules. This walk is presented under a Special Use Permit from OVLC. \nFor decades the wetland was buried under sediment and fill dirt from nearby construction. A grove of non-native Eucalyptus trees was planted in the 1950s\, negating the possibility of native habitat returning on its own. The property also was threatened with the possibility of a shopping center and parking lots. The meadows were acquired in 2000 by the OVLC with an outpouring of community support to protect them. Most of the $1.35M came from 140 citizens and businesses\, who demonstrated their commitment to preserving the meadows’ natural beauty. Flood waters from Nordhoff High School and Maricopa Highway were diverted onto the meadows bringing wildlife back to the area. Native plant restoration is an ongoing project. \nBefore the walk\, I will have copies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, available for sale and signing. A number of plants that we will meet can be found in the book. If spaces become available they will be filled based on date and time of registration. \nREGISTER\nPlease join me and Rondia for a potential once-in-a-lifetime event: a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike and Total Lunar Eclipse with complete visibility on Sunday evening\, May 15\, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. The next time a total lunar eclipse will be visible in Ventura County before 1 a.m. or later at night is August 6\, 2036. \nWe’ll gradually walk about 1.5 miles on a well-used dirt road with gradual elevation gain to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the sunset\, moonrise\, and total eclipse.  The sun will sink below the horizon at about 7:40 p.m. and the full moon will rise shortly after that at about 7:55 p.m. It will already be in partial eclipse by then\, reaching maximum total eclipse at 9:11 p.m. \nAfter witnessing this special astronomical event\, we’ll walk back by flashlight\, returning to the trailhead between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m. \nOn the way up\, we’ll stop along the trail to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants including: \nBlue Elderberry\nCoastal Sagebrush\nPrickly-Pear Cactus\nHorehound\nBlack Sage\nPurple Sage and\nChia Sage \nREGISTRATION INFO:\nThe cost for the hike is $35/person. Paid registrants will receive a confirmation email with all necessary info a few days before the walk.  \nREGISTER\nIn December 2017 the Koenigstein Fire ravaged Matilija Canyon\, leaving a barren landscape of ash and black sticks. Join us as we celebrate the lushness of the 5th spring since then with an Earth Day Herb Walk on Saturday\, April 23\, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.. This will be our first time back since 2016 as we’ve patiently waited for the vegetation and wildlife to return. The walk will take place northwest of Ojai on Matilija Creek\, deep in the mountains of the Matilija Wilderness in Los Padres National Forest. Matilija Wilderness (29\,600 acres in the USFS Ojai Ranger District) was established in 1992 by the Los Padres Condor Range and River Protection Act. \nWe will cover approximately 1 mile each way on a mostly level trail with very little elevation change through chaparral and riparian settings. The terrain includes two short creek crossings. Otherwise\, we will be on a wide\, level\, dirt road most of the time. This walk is suitable for physically fit beginning hikers with the proper footwear. The day will begin with a caravan from the Maricopa Plaza parking lot in Ojai at 9:00 am and return there by 12:30 pm. Along the way we’ll take a relaxing snack break on the upper north fork of Matilija Creek. \nWe’ll identify useful wild herbs and their plant families and explore the many ways native plants have been used by the Indigenous Chumash\, herbalists\, campers and gardeners for food\, medicine\, wildcrafting\, survival\, landscaping and more. The canyon is home to White Sage\, Coastal Sagebrush\, Yerba Santa\, Matilija Poppy\, California Bay and many more wonderful and useful native plants. \nA field of White Sage in Matilija Canyon \nSwallowtail on Yerba Santa flowers in Matilija Canyon \nWe will also look for birds\, butterflies and other wildlife and discuss the ecology of the Southern Los Padres National Forest. As always\, we’ll cover traditional and modern methods of sustainable foraging\, resource conservation\, and mindful enjoyment of nature. \nThis walk is presented under a Special Use Permit from the U.S. Forest Service designed for guides who provide recreational and interpretive services to the public. This workshop is based on his ground-breaking pharmacological studies on local native plants and his personal commitment to sharing the traditional medicinal practices he learned from Chumash healer Cecilia Garcia. Jim will be joined by plant educator Enrique Villaseñor and acupuncturist Michelle Wong\, co-authors with him of Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West: Cultural and Scientific Basis for Their Use\, Fourth Edition\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nThe workshop will take place at Euterpe Farms. In the morning\, Dr. Adams will identify and discuss the medicinal and spiritual uses of a variety of native plants. The hike will cover approximately two miles in Harmon Canyon Preserve. Wildflowers such as wild hyacinths\, lupine\, Douglas’ fiddlenecks\, California peonies\, and threatened mariposa lilies make their home in Harmon Canyon Preserve’s conserved 2\,123 acres of land\, amid roughly 1\,000 acres of endangered coastal sage scrub. Some of the edible and medicinal plants we may find this year on the Nature Preserve include manzanita\, purple and black sage\, woolly blue curls\, wild rose\, tule\, cattail\, and coastal sagebrush. In the middle of our hike\, we’ll celebrate the Spring Equinox at a medicine wheel on a summit with a spectacular 360 degree view. Lunch will not be provided but you are invited to stay and enjoy your sack lunch or snacks in this idyllic setting after the hike. Maybe you don’t care that much about their uses? Just want to know what they are? You are not alone. On Saturday\, March 19\, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon\, I will lead a native plant identification hike designed for you on the Rice Canyon Trail on the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy’s Ventura River Preserve. This will not be my typical herb walk discussing edible and medicinal plants. We will simply identify native plants on the trail\, most of which can be found throughout Southern California. Then\, afterwards\, you will receive a list by email of all the plants we saw\, including their common names\, scientific names\, and the plant families to which they belong. \nWith a helping hand and/or the use of walking sticks\, we’ll boulder-cross or wade through a narrow\, shallow stretch of the Ventura River and head up toward the shade of the canyon. We’ll meet a diverse group of plants representing the Coastal Sage Scrub\, Chaparral\, and Riparian Woodland plant communities of Southern California. Other than the short water crossing\, this is an easy-to-moderate hike of 2 miles round-trip with sections of mild elevation gain and a few short hills to climb. We’ll stop often to identify native plants. We’ll also discuss conservation concerns and the local ecology\, including the recovery of this area since the December 2017 Koenigstein fire. \nYes\, I will have my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, available for purchase and signing before the walk to use as a field guide and\, yes\, you’re encouraged to ask questions\, but I will spend minimal time talking about that aspect of the plants\, focusing instead on their identifying characteristics and their role in the ecosystem. \nThe book that I recommend for identifying plants on this hike (and on all our local trails) is Milt McAuley’s Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains. It turns out that every plant we will see in this canyon west of Ojai is also found in the Santa Monica Mountains. If Milt had named his book Wildflowers of Southern California\, that would have been a more accurate and appealing name\, at least for those who know that\, botanically\, every flowering plant is a wildflower\, whether or not it has a showy flower. I will have that book with me\, too\, so that you can purchase it without paying for shipping and handling. The sun will sink below the horizon at about 6:45 p.m. and the full moon will rise at about 7:10 p.m.\, giving us a nice window of time to take it all in. Registrants will receive instructions on where to park\, what to bring\, etc. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the “wearin’ of the green.” \nAfter witnessing the setting of the sun and rising of the moon\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by moonlight and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead between 7:45 and 8:00 p.m. \nThen at 8:00 p.m. you’re invited to join me and Rondia on Bryant Street at Ojai Valley Brewery‘s heated outdoor dining area where brewmaster Jeremy Haffner and his staff will be pouring his amazing locally-sourced beers\, ales. stouts and non-alcoholic beverages. They will have a St. Paddy’s Day party going on with music and Irish food. Christopher recently edited the new 2021 7th Edition of this classic. \nChristopher writes of Olsen: “Anyone who has been teaching outdoor survival skills for any length of time has undoubtedly heard of Larry Dean Olsen…After Olsen graduated from Brigham Young University\, he began teaching survival field trips through the college’s Continuing Education Division in 1968\, sharing his love for the outdoors\, and his intense interest in the skills of the local indigenous peoples…As part of his outdoor training\, he would take students into the desert of the Great Basin area and live off the land for a week or longer. They had to learn how to eat wild plants\, trap small game\, make fire with local materials\, build a shelter\, weave sandals\, find water\, and more. It was a grueling adventure. He wrote Outdoor Survival Skills\, first published in 1967\, which described all the survival skills he’d been teaching. His book has long been considered the definitive classic book on the subject. The book has been updated every few years and remained in print all these years.…Larry was perhaps the most visible person teaching and sharing the extreme art of living off the land.  It is not an overstatement to say that everyone today teaching these skills has some lineage\, direct or indirect\, that leads back to Larry Dean Olsen.” \nParticipants will: \n\nlearn to identify edible and medicinal plants of the season\npractice making cordage and soap from yucca leaves\nlearn the most basic primitive fire-starting method: the hand drill\nlearn principles of finding and purifying water\, especially in dry areas\n\nTime permitting\, participants may also: \n\nlearn a few simple animal traps\, such as snares and deadfalls\nlearn some very basic shelters for emergencies\n\nThere may be other activities\, depending on seasonal foods and supplies available. \nThe workshop will begin with a morning plant walk on Euterpe Farms\, overlooking the Ventura River Preserve. The afternoon workshop will take place under oak trees. Everyone will have a chance to participate in all activities. \nChristopher Nyerges is an author\, forager\, survivalist and ethnobotanist with a lifelong interest in how native peoples lived off the land. He has been teaching classes and leading field trips since 1974 to over 40\,000 students. Nyerges has authored nearly two dozen books\, including Foraging California\, Guide to Wild Foods\,  Nuts and Berries of California\, How to Survive Anywhere\, Extreme Simplicity\, and many others. As mentioned above\, Chicago Review Press\, the publishers of Larry Dean Olsen’s Outdoor Survival Skills\, asked Christopher to lightly edit the 7th edition of this classic book and add color photos and a new foreword. He most recently was the editor of American Survival Guide magazine\, and served as editor of Wilderness Way magazine for 7 years. He has written several thousand newspaper and magazine articles in such publications as the Los Angeles Times\, Pasadena Star News\, Pasadena Weekly\, Whole Life Times\, Countryside\, Mother Earth News\, Acres USA\, American  Survival Guide\, and others. \nChristopher has appeared on the late Huell Howser’s public television series\, KCET’s “Life and Times\,” and National Geographic’s “Doomsday Preppers.” For two years\, he appeared on Fox TV’s “X Show\,” where he demonstrated survival skills on the streets of Los Angeles. If you prefer\, you may request instructions for mailing in a check for $35/person. \nREGISTER\nOn Wednesday evening\, February 16\, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m.\, I’ll lead a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the sunset and moonrise. The sun will set at about 5:30 p.m. and the full moon will rise at about 6:10 p.m.\, giving us a nice window of time to take it all in. Following the hike is an optional “after-party” at the Ojai Valley Brewery. The cost of food and beverages is not included in the price of the hike. \nRegistrants will receive instructions on where to park. From the trailhead we’ll gradually walk about 1.5 miles on a well used dirt road with gradual elevation gain to the vista point\, stopping along the way to meet some valuable native plants including: \nCoastal Sagebrush\nToyon\nHorehound\nElderberry and\nPurple Sage \nAfter witnessing the setting of the sun and rising of the moon\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead between 6:45 and 7:00 p.m. \nThen at 7:00 p.m. you’re invited to join me and Rondia on Bryant Street at Ojai Valley Brewery’s heated outdoor dining area where brewmaster Jeremy Haffner and his staff will be pouring his amazing locally-sourced beers\, ales. stouts and non-alcoholic beverages. \nJeremy’s brews change with the seasons and reflect the plants of Ojai. Three staples you’re likely to find on his list any time of year are Sugar Bush IPA\, brewed with wild local Ojai “Sugar Bush” Sumac; White Pixie Ale\, brewed with Pixie tangerine zests and orchard blossoms; and an amazing Chaparral Ale flavored and bittered with White and Black Sage and local Sagebrush instead of the usual Hops. Jeremy describes it as “built to mimic the scent on Shelf Road.” That’s where we’ll be walking! Photo: Lanny Kaufer\nOn Saturday\, September 25\, 2021\, I will lead my 9th annual Fall Equinox Nature Hike in the peaceful Mixed Conifer Forest on the “sky island” known as Pine Mountain (elevation: 7000 feet). I promise that first time visitors to this area will be surprised and delighted to find a thick forest of pines\, fir and incense-cedar so close to the Ventura coast. If we’re lucky\, pine nuts will be falling as we walk. \nAccording to Craig Carey\, author of Hiking and Backpacking Santa Barbara and Ventura\, the Reyes Peak Trail along the northern slope of the peak is “quite simply one of the most beautiful stretches in the southern Los Padres.” \nBiogeographers include Pine Mountain in a select group of “sky islands\,” defined as isolated mountains surrounded by radically different lowland environments. We can expect to see several high altitude plants and trees like White Fir and Sugar Pine more commonly found in the Southern Sierra Nevada mountains. Weather and marine layer permitting\, we will have panoramic views of the Cuyama Valley to the north and the Channel Islands to the south. \nRondia and friends enjoying lunch. Photo: Chris Kudelka\nThe outing will start at 9:00 a.m. with a car caravan of about 35 miles up Highway 33 from the Maricopa Plaza\, (1207 Maricopa Highway\, Ojai\, CA 93023) to the Reyes Peak trailhead. The final 5.5 miles are on a narrow\, winding paved road and the very last half-mile is dirt. Trucks or SUV’s are preferred for the last stretch but most passenger cars with higher clearance can make the drive. \nLanny examines the needles of a White Fir sapling on the Reyes Peak Trail. Photo: John Griffith\nWe will start walking into the Sespe Wilderness from the trailhead (where there is a restroom) at about 10:30 a.m.\, stop for lunch (not provided) in the forest\, and return to the trailhead by about 3:30 p.m.\, arriving back at the Maricopa Plaza by about 4:00 p.m. We will hike on a well-used trail through mixed conifer forest habitat\, stopping often to identify and discuss native plants\, birds and wildlife. \nThis intermediate level hike is suitable for moderately experienced hikers or physically fit beginners. There will be some elevation gain and loss skirting the north side of Reyes Peak\, sometimes traversing hillsides on a narrow trail. SUMMARY:September 2021 Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike

Note: Online payment includes a PayPal fee. To avoid that\, when you register you can request instructions for mailing a payment of $35/person.\nREGISTER\nOn Monday evening\, September 20\, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.\, I’ll lead a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the sunset followed by the rising of the full moon. We’ll gradually hike about 1.25 miles each way to a vista point with some elevation gain on a well-worn\, dirt fire road with some uneven footing in places. Before sunset\, we’ll stop along the way to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants\, possibly including: \nCalifornia Buckwheat\nBlack Walnut\nToyon\nBlack & Purple Sage\nCoastal Sagebrush\nPrickly-Pear \nAfter witnessing the sunset and moonrise\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead at about 8:30 p.m. \nRain or chance of thunderstorms will cancel the hike. No dogs or smoking\, please. \nREGISTRATION INFO:\nThe cost of the hike is $35. Please use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before completing your payment with the PayPal button or personal check to secure your space. Please note: the PayPal payment will include their fee. Once you register you will receive instructions to mail a check if you prefer not to use PayPal. Paid reservations are refundable up to 5:30 p.m. on Friday\, September 17. After that\, if I receive your cancellation with enough time to fill your space and I’m able to do so\, you will receive a refund. \nPaid registrants will receive a confirmation email prior to the hike with all necessary info\, including weather forecast and parking directions.  They will also receive a follow-up email afterwards with a list of all plants and wildlife seen and other notes. \nIf the event sells out\, PayPal will not accept your payment. You will see a message that says this event “is not available at this time” and you will be returned to this page. If that happens\, be sure to click on the REGISTER button below to sign up for the waiting list. If spaces become available they will be filled based on time of registration. \nREGISTER
