DESCRIPTION:Summer Medicinal Plant Workshop with Professor Emeritus James Adams of USC School of Pharmacy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Adams making a point about elder flowers \n\n\n\nJump to registration\n\n\n\nPlease join me and special guest Professor Emeritus James Adams of USC School of Pharmacy for a Summer Medicinal Plant Workshop in Ojai on Sunday\, June 23\, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dr. Adams has been a popular presenter at my events for the past 12 years. Now that he has moved to the Bay Area\, he is here less frequently. This may be his only Ojai workshop this year so I encourage you to learn from him when you have the opportunity. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis workshop is based on Jim’s ground-breaking pharmacological studies on local native plants and his personal commitment to sharing the traditional medicinal practices he learned from Chumash healer Cecilia Garcia. Jim will be joined by plant educator Enrique Villaseñor and acupuncturist Michelle Wong\, co-authors with him of Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West: Cultural and Scientific Basis for Their Use\, Fourth Edition.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe morning plant walk will take place from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m at the Chumash Garden at Ojai Valley Museum\, a native plant demonstration garden in downtown Ojai. Dr. Adams and I will identify and discuss the medicinal and spiritual uses of a variety of native plants. This will be a short\, slow-paced walk with frequents stops by the plants for periods of time. A lightweight campstool or beach chair could be useful for those who are uncomfortable standing.  \n\n\n\nAfter a 1- hour break\, the afternoon session in Fisher Hall at St. Andrews Episcopal Church from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. will focus on preparing seasonal edible and medicinal products from wild foraged plant material. Participants will be able to soak their feet in pain-relieving black sage tea and go home with their own jar of sagebrush liniment that they prepared themselves. After the workshop\, participants will receive a follow-up email with a complete list of all plants that are identified or utilized as well as recipes and other info.  \n\n\n\nSeasonal plants and healing products to be featured may include\, among others: \n\n\n\n\nElder flowers\n\n\n\nEverlasting flowers\n\n\n\nWhite Sage\n\n\n\nMugwort\n\n\n\nSagebrush liniment\n\n\n\nDatura hand soak\n\n\n\nBlack Sage foot soak\n\n\n\nNopal (Prickly-Pear) smoothie\n\n\n\n\nAt 4:00 p.m. Dr. Adams\, Enrique\, and Michelle will sign copies of their book and I will sign copies of mine\, Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants. \n\n\n\nACUPUNCTURE CEUs: This course is approved by the California Acupuncture Board\, Provider Number 1526\, for 6 hours of continuing education. As he tells it\, “My family came to Virginia in 1635 and has always survived by using American Indian healing. On the frontier\, there were no doctors. American Indian healing was better than European medicine anyway. I continue this tradition.” \n\n\n\nDr. Adams is the co-author\, with Michelle Wong and Enrique Villaseñor\, of the fourth edition of the groundbreaking book\, Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West: Cultural and Scientific Basis for Their Use. The cultural portion is based on the teachings of Cecilia Garcia and the scientific portion on Dr. Adams’ laboratory studies. It can be purchased beforehand at that link and will also be available for purchase and signing at the event. \n\n\n\nAs an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Southern California for 32 years\, Dr. Adams taught pharmacy students\, medical students\, doctors and other healthcare professionals while researching the natural pharmaceutical compounds in native plants. He has over 200 publications. \n\n\n\nRunning parallel with his academic career\, Dr. Adams has worked with the Chumash people since 1998 and studied Chumash healing with Cecilia Garcia for almost 15 years. In addition to the book\, they collaborated on 30 journal articles. Jim is now the carrier of the healing knowledge passed to him by his teacher. \n\n\n\n“Humans have used plant medicines ever since humans came into existence\, about 200\,000 years ago\,” Dr. Adams explains in Healing with Medicinal Plants. “That means that our ancestors experienced an intense natural selection. Those who responded to plant medicines survived and passed their genes on. We are the products of this natural selection. Photo: Erika Klohe \n\n\n\nJUMP TO REGISTRATION\n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED FOR THIS HIKE.\n\n\n\nIf you’ve ever walked or hiked with me\, you’ve probably heard me rave about the special beauty of Pine Mountain. Experience it for yourself on our annual Summer Solstice Nature Hike on the Reyes Peak Trail. On Saturday\, June 22\, we’ll visit some of the most spectacular scenery and habitat that Ventura County has to offer just when many late spring wildflowers are blooming up there at an elevation of 7000 feet(!).  According to Craig Carey\, author of Hiking and Backpacking Santa Barbara and Ventura\, the Reyes Peak Trail along the northern slope of the peak is “quite simply one of the most beautiful stretches in the southern Los Padres.” \n\n\n\nThe outing will start at 9:00 a.m. with a car caravan of about 35 miles up Highway 33 from the Maricopa Plaza\, (1207 Maricopa Highway\, Ojai\, CA 93023) to the Reyes Peak trailhead. The final 5.5 miles are on a narrow\, winding paved road and the very last half-mile is dirt. Trucks or SUV’s are preferred for the last stretch but most passenger cars with high clearance can also make the drive. \n\n\n\nWe will start walking into the Sespe Wilderness from the trailhead (where there is a restroom) at about 10:30 a.m.\, stop for lunch (not provided) in the forest\, and return to the trailhead by 3:30 p.m.\, arriving back at the Maricopa Plaza by 4:00 p.m. We will hike on a well-used trail through Mixed Conifer Forest habitat\, stopping often to identify and discuss native plants\, birds and wildlife. \n\n\n\nThis intermediate level hike is suitable for moderately experienced hikers or physically fit beginners. There will be some elevation gain and loss skirting the north side of Reyes Peak\, sometimes traversing steep hillsides on a narrow trail. The total hiking distance will be about 3 miles. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: Those with respiratory or circulatory issues possibly affected by altitude should consult with a physician before attempting this hike. \n\n\n\nWeather and marine layer permitting\, we will have panoramic views of the Cuyama Valley to the north and the Channel Islands to the south.  This hike is another in a series of backcountry walks and hikes under an Operating Permit from the U.S. Forest Service designed for guides who provide recreational and interpretive services to the public. After the hike participants will receive a detailed follow-up email including a list of all plants identified. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: Light rain will not cancel. Heavy rain or thunderstorms will. Once you register you will receive weather updates\, directions and other info about what to wear\, etc. No dogs or smoking\, please. \n\n\n\nThe cost for the hike is $45/person. The outing will begin with a stop at Upper Rose Valley Lake followed by a walk through Rose Valley Campground and a shaded walk of 1/2 mile each way to the Falls. We will smell aromatic California Bay trees\, see stunning Crimson Columbines growing on the Falls\, and search for the elusive Sweet Cicely and California Violet herbs on the trail to the Falls. It’s still a great time of year to see a variety of wildflowers. \n\n\n\nThis walk is presented under a Special Use Permit from the Ojai Ranger District Office of the U.S. Forest Service designed for guides who provide recreational and interpretive services to the public. As I do on all my walks and hikes\, I will demonstrate and discuss the modern and ancient uses of wild plants. Poisonous plants will also be identified. Trailside discussion will include topics such as the difference between native and naturalized plants\, the role of humans in the ecological balance\, sustainable foraging\, and other topics generated by the participants. I’ve been leading informative and entertaining Herb Walks and Nature Hikes in Southern California since 1976. \n\n\n\nThe day will begin with a caravan from the Maricopa Plaza parking lot at 9:00 a.m. and return there by 12:30 p.m. The cost is $35 for adults\, $25 for students 13-17\, and $15 for children 5-12\, one per adult\, by prior arrangement. DESCRIPTION:Harvesting and Processing Herbs Class\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease join me on June 9 as I lead a class on “Harvesting and Processing Herbs” as part of the Introductory Course to Herbalism at Ema’s Herbs in Ventura. Come learn about the guidelines\, methods\, timing\, and other aspects of creating your home herbal apothecary with local edible and medicinal flora of Southern California. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEma’s Herbs is offering an 8-month course that focuses on Herbal Medicine Preparation\, Holistic Health Principles\, and Herbal Traditions for the Bioregion. Starting in May\, and going until November\, Ema’s Herbs will help people access herbal knowledge to address health needs and support each of their communities to uplift those around them. My classes on May 19\, June 9\, and October 6 are part of that course. NOTE: Enrollment is closed for the full 8-month course but you can drop in to any class for a $20 fee. \n\n\n\nLanny Kaufer of HerbWalks.com has been leading herb walks\, nature hikes\, and workshops in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties since 1976\, educating hundreds of residents and visitors on the edible and medicinal flora of the area. He holds a biology degree from UC Santa Cruz and is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants (Falcon Guides\, 2021). The sun will set and the full moon will rise at about 7:50 p.m.\, giving us a nice window of time to take it all in. The moon will reach fullness at 6 a.m. on Thursday so Wednesday night’s moon will appear at its fullest. Scheduling it on a Wednesday also means we can have an optional “after-party” at the Ojai Valley Brewery (OVB). Join me Saturday\, May 18\, for a Nature Hike on Potrero John Creek\, deep in the Sespe Wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest. Beginning at 9 a.m.\, a 20-mile carpool/caravan will take us from Ojai to the trailhead. We’ll return to Ojai around 3 p.m. Starting our hike at an elevation of 3700 feet\, we’ll meet a diverse group of plants representing the upper Chaparral and Riparian Woodland plant communities of Southern California.  \n\n\n\nThis will be an easy-to-moderate hike of about 2-3 miles round-trip with sections of mild elevation gain and a few short creek crossings. We’ll stop often to identify edible\, medicinal\, and otherwise useful plants. We can expect to see a number of plants not found at lower elevations\, including Bigcone Douglas-Fir\, Incense-Cedar\, Yerba Santa\, Mariposa Lily\, Giant Stinging Nettle\, and others. \n\n\n\nThis hike is presented under a Special Use Permit from the U. S. Forest Service for guides and outfitters in the Los Padres National Forest.  After the hike\, participants will receive an email with a complete list of all plants and wildlife identified as well as other info. \n\n\n\nPlease note: The hike will go on RAIN OR SHINE with the exception of a heavy downpour that morning and/or a forecast of an 80-100% chance of heavy rain that day. She studied health education and nutritional counseling at the Gary Null Health and Nutrition Program in New York\, and she is a graduate of the Herbal Therapeutics Study Program and the Herbal Therapeutics Graduate Clinical Program of the Herbalist Therapeutics Research Foundation\, founded and directed by herbalist and ethnobotanist David Winston.  \nHer garden\, the Earth Island Medicinal Herb Garden in Ojai\, California\, serves as a hub for several medicinal herb-oriented ventures that bring the idea of using medicinal herbs in daily living as a viable and logical choice to the community at large. Dreamed up long ago and finally made a reality in 2012\, the Garden has taken years of intense work by Carol and her students to become the gorgeous landmark it is today. Since ground was first broken\, the garden has truly blossomed\, becoming a must-see stop for visitors and a place of respite and renewal for locals. With breathtaking views of the valley’s encompassing mountains\, the garden was conceived as a showpiece\, educational tool\, and medicinal resource in one. Designed in the shape of a nautilus shell\, the 11 main beds in the garden represent the major body systems\, and each is planted with specimen herbs from around the world specially suited to supporting and healing those systems. Above the nautilus is a sunburst row of production beds\, with plants for future harvest and use in tinctures\, salves\, oils and other preparations. \nIn 2016 Carol founded the Ojai School of Herbal Studies\, a 22-month herbal studies program that utilizes the garden\, hands on medicine making\, and an in-depth education in how to use herbs safely and effectively\, including terminology\, plant chemistry\, anatomy and physiology\, an extensive materia medica\, and actual herb cultivation. \nABOUT LANNY KAUFER:Lanny Kaufer has been leading Herb Walks and Nature Hikes in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties since 1976\, educating hundreds of locals and visitors on the flora of the area with a focus on herbs that can be used for food and medicine. The sun will set and the full moon will rise at about 7:15 p.m.\, giving us a nice window of time to take it all in. The actual full moon time is late Tuesday afternoon\, so Wednesday night’s moon will appear just as full. Scheduling it on a Wednesday means we can have an optional “after-party” at the Ojai Valley Brewery (OVB) with hot food. That is one of the two nights a week they have a food truck onsite. From the trailhead we’ll gradually walk about 1.5 miles on a well used dirt road with gradual elevation gain to the vista point\, stopping along the way to meet some valuable native plants including: \nBlue Elderberry\nWild Horehound\nBlack & Purple Sage\nCoastal Sagebrush\nYucca and\nPrickly-Pear \nAfter witnessing the setting of the sun and rising of the moon\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead at about 8:00. \nThe After-Party: Then at 8:15 p.m. you’re invited to join me and Rondia on Bryant Street at Ojai Valley Brewery’s heated outdoor dining area where brewmasters Jeremy Haffner\, Griffin Davis\, and their staff will be pouring their amazing locally-sourced beers\, ales. stouts and non-alcoholic beverages. They usually have a food truck on Wednesdays. If not\, Rondia will make chili for us to share. The day will begin with a morning foraging expedition on the grounds of Euterpe Farms’ outdoor study area overlooking the Ventura River Preserve. After the foraging walk and a mid-day break\, hands-on food processing activities will take place in Fisher Hall at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Ojai to prepare a vegetarian community meal. DESCRIPTION:Wheeler Gorge Nature Hike\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJump to registration\n\n\nPlease join me on Saturday\, April 6\, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for another nature hike on the Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail. The February hike sold out quickly so I scheduled another to accommodate all those who want to visit this special place just 9 miles up scenic Highway 33 from Ojai. The trail loop is less than 1 mile long and features a rushing mountain stream under a canopy of trees\, long views of the surrounding mountains\, and plenty of native plants for identifying\, demonstrating and discussing their many uses by foragers\, herbalists\, and naturalists for food\, herbal medicine\, first aid\, home remedies\, survival\, crafts\, ceremony and more. This time of year we can expect to find Coast Live Oaks\, White Alders\, Mugwort\, California Blackberry\, Black Sage\, Chamise\, Canyon Pea\, and Soap Plant\, among many others. Poison Oak will also be identified (and avoided). Participants will receive an email afterwards with a plant list (including common and scientific names) and other useful notes. \n\nCanyon Pea on Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail\, February 2022\n\n\nTrailside discussion will include sustainable foraging\, Chumash plant uses\, and other topics generated by the participants. This is designated as a “nature hike” rather than an  “herb walk” because the trail includes some short but steep inclines with stretches of rocky footing. Rocks may be slippery if it has rained recently. Good balance and hiking shoes are required. \nWe will meet at Maricopa Plaza parking lot in Ojai at 8:45 a.m. for a 9:00 a.m. caravan/carpool to the trailhead. We’ll walk for two hours beginning at 9:30 and return to Maricopa Plaza by approximately 12:00 p.m. An optional visit to the Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center on the way back to town is also possible. The cost for all ages of participants is $25. The sun will set and the full moon will rise at about 6:15 p.m.\, giving us a nice window of time to take it all in. The actual full moon time is 12:00 a.m. on Monday\, so Saturday night’s moon will appear completely full. Allow plenty of time to find the venue and to make your way up the miles-long driveway. \nPlease join me for a Spring Equinox/St. Patrick’s Day Walkabout at Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve on Sunday\, March 17\, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. “Walkabout” is an Australian term for a temporary return to traditional Aboriginal life\, taken especially between periods of work or residence in modern society and usually involving a period of travel through the bush. That is what I have planned for us in observance of the Spring Equinox\, although for a much shorter time than the traditional Australian journey and as a group instead of solo. \nCoincidentally\, March 17 is also St. Patrick’s Day. Long before St. Paddy and Christianity arrived in Ireland\, the ancient Celts celebrated the Spring Equinox with a festival known as Ostara. This festival was a celebration of the end of winter and the start of the spring season. We will honor that “pagan” tradition as well. You are strongly encouraged to wear green. \nOur walkabout will begin in the Australian section of the Gardens and make its way through the wild plant communities in the Nature Preserve to the Four Directions Circle\, a replica of a Native American medicine wheel on a mesa with a 360 degree view. There we will interact with the stone compass as we connect with the annual solar cycle and our own ancestral origins somewhere on Planet Earth. \nAs we do on all my monthly Natural History walks at the Taft Ranch\, we will identify and discuss useful plants and observe birds and animal signs in the context of the local ecology. This trail loop is less than 1 mile long and features a rushing mountain stream under a canopy of trees\, long views of the surrounding mountains\, and plenty of native plants for identifying\, demonstrating and discussing their many uses by foragers\, herbalists\, and naturalists for food\, herbal medicine\, first aid\, home remedies\, survival\, crafts\, ceremony and more. This time of year we can expect to find Coast Live Oaks\, White Alders\, Indian Lettuce\, Mugwort\, California Blackberry\, Black Sage\, Canyon Pea\, and Soap Plant\, among many others. We will probably encounter mushrooms and other fungi. Poison Oak will also be identified (and avoided). Participants will receive an email afterwards with a plant list (including common and scientific names) and other useful notes. \n\nCanyon Pea on Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail\, February 2022\nTrailside discussion will include sustainable foraging\, Chumash plant uses\, and other topics generated by the participants. This is designated as a “nature hike” rather than an  “herb walk” because the trail includes some short but steep inclines with stretches of rocky footing. Rocks may be slippery if it has rained recently. Good balance and hiking shoes are required. \nWe will meet at Maricopa Plaza parking lot in Ojai at 9:45 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. caravan/carpool to the trailhead.
