SUMMARY:“Herbal Tools for Tumultuous Times” － A Garden Workshop with Carol Wade
DESCRIPTION:“Herbal Tools for Tumultuous Times” － A Garden Workshop with Carol Wade\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nJUMP TO REGISTRATION\nOn Saturday\, April 27\, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, herbalist-gardener-teacher Carol Wade of Ojai School of Herbal Studies will lead an outdoor workshop — “Herbal Tools for Tumultuous Times” — on using plants to cultivate a state of mental resilience and hope as we move through unsettling times. \nThe emotions these times bring up for ourselves and our loved ones— insecurity\, depression\, anxiety and grief — can be overwhelming. A look outside our doorsteps reveals a world of possible tools and allies: plants in all their glory\, natural light\, breaths of fresh air\, scents\, colors and simple movements. Let’s explore them all at Carol’s amazing Earth Island Medicinal Herb Garden in the East End of the Ojai Valley! \nDuring a morning herb walk through the Garden led by Carol and me\, you’ll enjoy the beautiful vistas as you learn how to grow and care for some of the many herbal allies that live in the Garden.  You’ll also learn the properties of plants that we’ll process in the afternoon hands-on  workshop. We’ll use herbs we’ve gathered to make healing products to take home\, such as: \n\nResiliency Tea\nAromatherapy or Foot Massage Oil\nFoot Bath Blend\nSmall Smudge Bundle\n\nThe cost is $75/person\, due in advance by PayPal or personal check. A $5 cash materials fee will be collected onsite. I will have my mobile bookshop with me\, including my signed book and the rest of my curated collection. Please note: Due to limited space for gathering in the Garden\, registration will be limited to 14 participants. \nACUPUNCTURE CEUs: This course has been approved by the California Acupuncture Board\, Provider Number 1526\, for 7 hours of continuing education. There is a $25 processing fee for receiving a CEU certificate. Please indicate on the REGISTRATION form BELOW if you are interested in CEUs. If you have one\, please enter your acupuncture school discount code on the form. \nABOUT CAROL WADE:Carol Wade is a Registered Herbalist with the American Herbalists Guild and has practiced as an herbalist and nutritional counselor for over 25 years. She studied health education and nutritional counseling at the Gary Null Health and Nutrition Program in New York\, and she is a graduate of the Herbal Therapeutics Study Program and the Herbal Therapeutics Graduate Clinical Program of the Herbalist Therapeutics Research Foundation\, founded and directed by herbalist and ethnobotanist David Winston. \nHer garden\, the Earth Island Medicinal Herb Garden in Ojai\, California\, serves as a hub for several medicinal herb-oriented ventures that bring the idea of using medicinal herbs in daily living as a viable and logical choice to the community at large. Dreamed up long ago and finally made a reality in 2012\, the Garden has taken years of intense work by Carol and her students to become the gorgeous landmark it is today. Since ground was first broken\, the garden has truly blossomed\, becoming a must-see stop for visitors and a place of respite and renewal for locals. With breathtaking views of the valley’s encompassing mountains\, the garden was conceived as a showpiece\, educational tool\, and medicinal resource in one. Designed in the shape of a nautilus shell\, the 11 main beds in the garden represent the major body systems\, and each is planted with specimen herbs from around the world specially suited to supporting and healing those systems. Above the nautilus is a sunburst row of production beds\, with plants for future harvest and use in tinctures\, salves\, oils and other preparations. \nIn 2016 Carol founded the Ojai School of Herbal Studies\, a 22-month herbal studies program that utilizes the garden\, hands on medicine making\, and an in-depth education in how to use herbs safely and effectively\, including terminology\, plant chemistry\, anatomy and physiology\, an extensive materia medica\, and actual herb cultivation. \nABOUT LANNY KAUFER:Lanny Kaufer has been leading Herb Walks and Nature Hikes in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties since 1976\, educating hundreds of locals and visitors on the flora of the area with a focus on herbs that can be used for food and medicine. As an herbal educator\, Lanny also leads workshops and presentations throughout the Ojai-Ventura-Santa Barbara area on the edible and medicinal uses of California plants. He holds a degree in Biology from UC Santa Cruz\, serves on the faculty of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at California State University\, Channel Islands. \nLanny is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants (Falcon Guides\, 2021). Lanny hosts the Ojai Herbal Symposium and serves as chief consultant on medicinal plants for the Swimmer Medicinal Garden in Playa Vista. \nPLEASE NOTE: Light rain will not cancel. Heavy rain or thunderstorms will. Once you register you will receive weather updates\, directions and other info about what to wear\, etc. No dogs or smoking\, please. \nThe cost of the workshop is $75. After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee.\nREGISTER\nOn Wednesday evening\, April 24\, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.\, my wife Rondia and I will lead a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the simultaneous sunset and full moonrise. The sun will set and the full moon will rise at about 7:15 p.m.\, giving us a nice window of time to take it all in. The actual full moon time is late Tuesday afternoon\, so Wednesday night’s moon will appear just as full. Scheduling it on a Wednesday means we can have an optional “after-party” at the Ojai Valley Brewery (OVB) with hot food. That is one of the two nights a week they have a food truck onsite. Read more about that below. \nRegistrants will receive instructions on where to park. From the trailhead we’ll gradually walk about 1.5 miles on a well used dirt road with gradual elevation gain to the vista point\, stopping along the way to meet some valuable native plants including: \nBlue Elderberry\nWild Horehound\nBlack & Purple Sage\nCoastal Sagebrush\nYucca and\nPrickly-Pear \nAfter witnessing the setting of the sun and rising of the moon\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead at about 8:00. \nThe After-Party: Then at 8:15 p.m. you’re invited to join me and Rondia on Bryant Street at Ojai Valley Brewery’s heated outdoor dining area where brewmasters Jeremy Haffner\, Griffin Davis\, and their staff will be pouring their amazing locally-sourced beers\, ales. stouts and non-alcoholic beverages. They usually have a food truck on Wednesdays. If not\, Rondia will make chili for us to share. More updates here as they are posted on the OVB website. \nOVB brews change with the seasons and reflect the plants of Ojai. Three staples you’re likely to find on the list any time of year are Sugar Bush IPA\, brewed with wild local Ojai “Sugar Bush” Sumac; White Pixie Ale\, brewed with Pixie tangerine zests and orchard blossoms; and an amazing Chaparral Ale flavored and bittered with White and Black Sage and local Sagebrush instead of the usual Hops. Jeremy describes it as “built to mimic the scent on Shelf Road.” That’s where we’ll be walking! Non-alcoholic offerings also change with the seasons and may include an Elderflower-Blackberry Spritzer. \nREGISTRATION INFO:\nThe cost for the hike is $35/person. Senior\, student and child discounts are available. See PayPal button below. Paid registrants will receive a confirmation email a few days prior to the event with all necessary info\, including what to bring\, weather forecast\, and directions to the trailhead. Afterwards\, they also will receive a follow-up email with a list of all plants and wildlife seen. \nNo dogs or smoking\, please. \nMY WEATHER POLICY: Walks and hikes will go on RAIN OR SHINE unless there is a steady downpour on the morning of the event\, probability of thunderstorm\, or a solid forecast of either the day before. Light rain or drizzle will not result in cancellation on my part. I will update registrants by email and text\, as needed\, and issue refunds if I need to cancel because of the weather. \nPlease use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal link at the bottom of this page to secure your space. The February hike sold out quickly so I scheduled another to accommodate all those who want to visit this special place just 9 miles up scenic Highway 33 from Ojai. The trail loop is less than 1 mile long and features a rushing mountain stream under a canopy of trees\, long views of the surrounding mountains\, and plenty of native plants for identifying\, demonstrating and discussing their many uses by foragers\, herbalists\, and naturalists for food\, herbal medicine\, first aid\, home remedies\, survival\, crafts\, ceremony and more. This time of year we can expect to find Coast Live Oaks\, White Alders\, Mugwort\, California Blackberry\, Black Sage\, Chamise\, Canyon Pea\, and Soap Plant\, among many others. Rocks may be slippery if it has rained recently. Good balance and hiking shoes are required. \nWe will meet at Maricopa Plaza parking lot in Ojai at 8:45 a.m. for a 9:00 a.m. caravan/carpool to the trailhead. We’ll walk for two hours beginning at 9:30 and return to Maricopa Plaza by approximately 12:00 p.m. An optional visit to the Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center on the way back to town is also possible. The cost for all ages of participants is $25. Documented use of humans eating medicinal herbs dates back at least 50\,000 years. Today\, the World Health Organization estimates that 60 percent of the world’s population rely on herbal medicines for their primary health care.So why have medicinal herbs largely disappeared from modern American standard practice medicine and the pharmacies that supply it? \nIn this course\, you will learn the twists and turns in the fascinating history of American herbal medicine\, a history that begins with Native Americans\, famous Greeks\, Romans\, medieval monks\, and European kings\, to surprising participants like George Washington\,  John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie. \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Lanny Kaufer has been leading Herb Walks in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties since 1976\, educating scores of locals and visitors on the flora of the area with a focus on herbs that can be used for food and medicine. He is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California (Falcon Guides\, 2021).Lanny has studied extensively in biology\, naturopathic medicine\, foraging\, and medicinal plants. He earned a biology degree at the University of California and served as chief consultant on medicinal plants for the redesign of the Swimmer Medicinal Garden in Playa Vista. Lanny lives in Ojai with his wife Rondia.

After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee.\nREGISTER\nOn Saturday evening\, March 23\, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m.\, my wife Rondia and I will lead a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the simultaneous sunset and full moonrise. The sun will set and the full moon will rise at about 6:15 p.m.\, giving us a nice window of time to take it all in. The actual full moon time is 12:00 a.m. on Monday\, so Saturday night’s moon will appear completely full. Scheduling it on a Saturday means we can have an optional “after-party” at the Ojai Valley Brewery (OVB). Read more about that below. \nRegistrants will receive instructions on where to park. From the trailhead we’ll gradually walk about 1.5 miles on a well used dirt road with gradual elevation gain to the vista point\, stopping along the way to meet some valuable native plants including: \nBlue Elderberry\nWild Horehound\nBlack & Purple Sage\nCoastal Sagebrush\nYucca and\nPrickly-Pear \nAfter witnessing the setting of the sun and rising of the moon\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead at about 7:00. I will have my book Medicinal Herbs of California on hand for sale and signing at that time. \nThe After-Party: Then at 7:15 p.m. you’re invited to join me and Rondia on Bryant Street at Ojai Valley Brewery’s heated outdoor dining area where brewmasters Jeremy Haffner and Griffin Davis and their staff will be pouring their amazing locally-sourced beers\, ales. stouts and non-alcoholic beverages. On the 23rd they will feature East Indian food from Himalaya Cuisine. SUMMARY:Spring Equinox/St. Patrick's Day Walkabout at Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Alexandra Nicklin: Four Directions Circle at the Vista on Taft Nature Preserve \nPlease note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF)\, stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. They are handling all registrations. Please visit this page to register. You can email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com with any questions. Admission to the walkabout is $50/person which includes a $15 donation to CEF. \nRegistrants will receive an email from CEF with detailed directions. Please do not try to find the venue by using other maps or GPS. Allow plenty of time to find the venue and to make your way up the miles-long driveway. \nPlease join me for a Spring Equinox/St. Patrick’s Day Walkabout at Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve on Sunday\, March 17\, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. “Walkabout” is an Australian term for a temporary return to traditional Aboriginal life\, taken especially between periods of work or residence in modern society and usually involving a period of travel through the bush. That is what I have planned for us in observance of the Spring Equinox\, although for a much shorter time than the traditional Australian journey and as a group instead of solo. \nCoincidentally\, March 17 is also St. Patrick’s Day. Long before St. Paddy and Christianity arrived in Ireland\, the ancient Celts celebrated the Spring Equinox with a festival known as Ostara. This festival was a celebration of the end of winter and the start of the spring season. We will honor that “pagan” tradition as well. You are strongly encouraged to wear green. \nOur walkabout will begin in the Australian section of the Gardens and make its way through the wild plant communities in the Nature Preserve to the Four Directions Circle\, a replica of a Native American medicine wheel on a mesa with a 360 degree view. There we will interact with the stone compass as we connect with the annual solar cycle and our own ancestral origins somewhere on Planet Earth. \nAs we do on all my monthly Natural History walks at the Taft Ranch\, we will identify and discuss useful plants and observe birds and animal signs in the context of the local ecology. My intention is to create a space for people to connect and interact with the natural world by learning the language of nature. \nABOUT TAFT GARDENS & NATURE PRESERVE:\nA project of the nonprofit Conservation Endowment Fund\, Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve was described for years as one of Ojai’s best-kept secrets. Not anymore! This botanical gem was featured 2022 in an L. A. Times article on “The 16 Most Beautiful and Inviting Public Gardens in Southern California” and also included in the RedBook Magazine list of “The 12 Most Beautiful Botanical Gardens in the United States.”  \nABOUT LANNY KAUFER:\nLanny Kaufer has been leading herb walks and nature hikes\, as well as foraging and medicinal plant workshops\, since 1976\, focusing on ethnobotany\, the academic term for the human uses of plants. He is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California\, published by Falcon Guides in December of 2021 and now in its third printing. Copies will be available for sale and signing after the walkabout. Lanny is the founder and director of the Ojai Herbal Symposium.

After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee.\nREGISTER\nPlease join me on Saturday\, February 10\, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for a nature hike on the Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail. This trail loop is less than 1 mile long and features a rushing mountain stream under a canopy of trees\, long views of the surrounding mountains\, and plenty of native plants for identifying\, demonstrating and discussing their many uses by foragers\, herbalists\, and naturalists for food\, herbal medicine\, first aid\, home remedies\, survival\, crafts\, ceremony and more. This time of year we can expect to find Coast Live Oaks\, White Alders\, Indian Lettuce\, Mugwort\, California Blackberry\, Black Sage\, Canyon Pea\, and Soap Plant\, among many others. We will probably encounter mushrooms and other fungi. Poison Oak will also be identified (and avoided). Participants will receive an email afterwards with a plant list (including common and scientific names) and other useful notes. \n\nCanyon Pea on Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail\, February 2022\nTrailside discussion will include sustainable foraging\, Chumash plant uses\, and other topics generated by the participants. This is designated as a “nature hike” rather than an  “herb walk” because the trail includes some short but steep inclines with stretches of rocky footing. Rocks may be slippery if it has rained recently. Good balance and hiking shoes are required. \nWe will meet at Maricopa Plaza parking lot in Ojai at 9:45 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. caravan/carpool to the trailhead. We’ll walk for two hours beginning at 10:30 and return to Maricopa Plaza by approximately 1:00 p.m. An optional visit to the Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center on the way back to town is also possible. The cost for all ages of participants is $25. Please email me if you have questions about bringing children. \nPlease note: The hike will take place RAIN OR SHINE unless there is a steady downpour that morning or a forecast of thunderstorms. Registrants will be updated\, if needed\, by text and/or email. \nThis event in the Los Padres National Forest is presented under a Special Use Permit from the U. S. Forest Service for wilderness outfitters and guides. \nBefore the walk\, at the caravan meeting place\, I will have my mobile bookstore on display\, including copies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, available for sale and signing. \n \nPlease be sure to use the REGISTER link below or at the bottom of the page before clicking on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. SUMMARY:Oaktober Natural History Walk at Taft Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF)\, stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve as one of their “Oaktober” events. They are handling all registrations. To register for the event\, please visit this page or email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com.  \nRegistrants will receive an email from CEF with detailed directions. Please do not try to find the venue by using other maps or GPS. Allow plenty of time to find the venue and to make your way up the miles-long driveway. \nPlease join me for a Natural History Walk at Taft Nature Preserve on Saturday\, October 28\, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.\, meeting at 9:45 a.m. We will explore trails through the wild parts of the property\, identify and discuss native plants\, and observe birds and animal tracks in the context of local ecology. This walk is part of the Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve “Oaktober” series focusing on the native oak trees on the property. I will give special attention to the Coast Live Oaks (Quercus agrifolia) and their important role as a cornerstone species in the local ecosystem. \nThis event is a perfect fit with my personal mission to open a space for people to connect with the natural world\, starting with the plant community. And Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve is an amazing place! In fact\, it was featured in an L. A. Times article on “The 16 Most Beautiful and Inviting Public Gardens in Southern California.” And it was recently included in the RedBook Magazine list of “The 12 Most Beautiful Botanical Gardens in the United States.” \nThe $35 cost includes a $10 donation to benefit the CEF\, the non-profit steward of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. The donation portion of the fee is tax-deductible. Space is limited so please register today by email to taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com. \nI will have my mobile bookshop onsite after the walk\, including my new book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, and Milt McAuley’s classic Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains which features every plant we will see. \nPlease plan on leaving dogs and cigarettes at home. Thanks! \nPlease note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF)\, stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve as one of their “Oaktober” events. After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee.\nREGISTER\nOn Sunday\, October 22\, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. we will return to the beautiful Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park\, also known as El Estero\, a rare salt wetland in Southern California. Nearly destroyed by development\, the remaining estuary was restored in the late 1990s by a group of concerned citizens along with the City of Carpinteria\, UCSB\, and the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County. Completed in 1997\, the 8-acre portion of the marsh owned by the City of Carpinteria was renamed the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park. \n \nThe park includes walking trails and interpretive signage. It is home to hundreds of migrating birds and other wildlife\, including exotic sharks\, rays and native fish when conditions are right. Depending on the tide level we may be able to see marine wildlife like the Guitarnose Shovelfish and Round Stingrays shown above in John Brant’s photo from our walk there in 2021. We chose a date with favorable tides so we’re keeping our fingers crossed. \nCalifornia Statice AKA Sea-Lavender (Limonium californium) \nWhether or not we see any marine life\, there is a great variety of edible and medicinal plants of the Coastal Strand and Coastal Sage Scrub plant communities for us to see and learn from. Interesting and useful native plants there include Blue Elderberry\, California Blackberry\, Grindelia\, Lemonade Berry\, Mugwort\, Pickleweed\, California Statice\, Wild Rose\, and Coastal Sagebrush. \nThis walk is presented under a license from the City of Carpinteria. Due to the sensitivity of the habitat\, dogs are prohibited here. No smoking\, please. \nCopies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, will be on hand for sale and signing before and after the walk. \n \nREGISTRATION:\nPlease use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal link at the bottom of this page to secure your space. SUMMARY:Fall Equinox Walkabout at Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Alexandra Nicklin: Four Directions Circle at the Vista on Taft Nature Preserve\n\nPlease note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF)\, stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. They are handling all registrations. To register for the event\, please visit TaftGardens.org or email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com. \n\nRegistrants will receive an email from CEF with detailed directions. Please do not try to find the venue by using other maps or GPS. Allow plenty of time to find the venue and to make your way up the miles-long driveway.\n\nPlease join me for a Fall Equinox Walkabout at Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve on Sunday\, September 24\, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. “Walkabout” is an Australian term for a temporary return to traditional Aboriginal life\, taken especially between periods of work or residence in modern society and usually involving a period of travel through the bush. That is what I have planned for you in observance of the fall equinox\, although for a much shorter time than the traditional Australian journey and as a group instead of solo.\n\nOur walkabout will begin in the Australian section of the Gardens and make its way through the wild plant communities in the Nature Preserve to the Four Directions Circle\, a replica of a Native American medicine wheel on a mesa with a 360 degree view. There we will interact with the four directions as we connect with the annual solar cycle and our own ancestral origins somewhere on Planet Earth.\n\nAs I do on my monthly Natural History walks at the Taft Ranch\, I will identify and discuss useful plants and observe birds and animal signs in the context of the local ecology. My intention is to create a space for people to connect with the natural world by learning the language of nature.\n\nABOUT TAFT GARDENS & NATURE PRESERVE:\nA project of the nonprofit Conservation Endowment Fund\, Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve was described for years as one of Ojai’s best-kept secrets. Not anymore! This botanical gem was featured last year in an L. A. Times article on “The 16 Most Beautiful and Inviting Public Gardens in Southern California” and recently included in the RedBook Magazine list of “The 12 Most Beautiful Botanical Gardens in the United States.” \n\nABOUT LANNY KAUFER:\nLanny Kaufer has been leading herb walks and nature hikes\, as well as foraging and medicinal plant workshops\, since 1976\, focusing on ethnobotany\, the academic term for the human uses of plants. He is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California\, published by Falcon Guides in December of 2021 and now in its third printing. Copies will be available for sale and signing after the walkabout. Lanny is the founder and director of the Ojai Herbal Symposium\, returning the weekend of November 11-12\, 2023.\n\nPlease note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF)\, stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. They are handling all registrations. To register for the event\, please visit TaftGardens.org or email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com. \n\nRegistrants will receive an email from CEF with detailed directions. \nThere is a great variety of edible and medicinal plants of the Coastal Strand and Coastal Sage Scrub plant communities for us to see and learn from. Useful native plants there include Blue Elderberry\, California Blackberry\, Grindelia\, Lemonade Berry\, Mugwort\, Pickleweed\, Wild Rose\, and Coastal Sagebrush. \nDue to the sensitivity of the habitat\, dogs are prohibited here. No smoking\, please. \nCopies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, will be on hand for sale and signing before and after the walk. \n  \nREGISTRATION:\nThe cost for the walk is $35.
