After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee.\nREGISTER\nOn Saturday evening\, October 28\, from 5:00 to 7:15 p.m.\, my wife Rondia and I will lead a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the simultaneous sunset and full moonrise. The sun will set and the full moon will rise at about 6:20 p.m.\, giving us a nice window of time to take it all in. Following the hike is an optional “after-party” at the Ojai Valley Brewery. Read more about that below. \nRegistrants will receive instructions on where to park. From the trailhead we’ll gradually walk about 1.5 miles on a well used dirt road with gradual elevation gain to the vista point\, stopping along the way to meet some valuable native plants including: \nCalifornia Buckwheat\nBlack & Purple Sage\nCoastal Sagebrush\nToyon\nYucca\nPrickly-Pear\nand\, hopefully\, the fragrant night-blooming Brickellbush. \nAfter witnessing the setting of the sun and rising of the moon\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead at about 7:15. \nThe After-Party: Then at 7:30 p.m. you’re invited to join me and Rondia on Bryant Street at Ojai Valley Brewery’s heated outdoor dining area where brewmaster Jeremy Haffner and his staff will be pouring his amazing locally-sourced beers\, ales. stouts and non-alcoholic beverages. They’ll also have food and music! \nJeremy’s brews change with the seasons and reflect the plants of Ojai. Three staples you’re likely to find on his list any time of year are Sugar Bush IPA\, brewed with wild local Ojai “Sugar Bush” Sumac; White Pixie Ale\, brewed with Pixie tangerine zests and orchard blossoms; and an amazing Chaparral Ale flavored and bittered with White and Black Sage and local Sagebrush instead of the usual Hops. Jeremy describes it as “built to mimic the scent on Shelf Road.” That’s where we’ll be walking! Non-alcoholic offerings also change with the seasons and may include an Elderflower-Blackberry Spritzer. \nREGISTRATION INFO:\nThe cost for the hike is $35/person. Senior\, student and child discounts are available by request. Paid registrants will receive a confirmation email a few days prior to the event with all necessary info\, including what to bring\, weather forecast\, and directions to the trailhead. Afterwards\, they also will receive a follow-up email with a list of all plants and wildlife seen. \nNo dogs or smoking\, please. Light rain will not cancel. Heavy rain or solid chance of thunderstorm will. You will receive a refund if I need to cancel due to weather. \nPlease use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal link at the bottom of this page to secure your space. The PayPal cost includes their fee. If you prefer\, when you register you may request instructions for mailing a check for $35/person. SUMMARY:Oaktober Natural History Walk at Taft Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF)\, stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve as one of their “Oaktober” events. They are handling all registrations. To register for the event\, please visit this page or email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com.  \nRegistrants will receive an email from CEF with detailed directions. Please do not try to find the venue by using other maps or GPS. Allow plenty of time to find the venue and to make your way up the miles-long driveway. \nPlease join me for a Natural History Walk at Taft Nature Preserve on Saturday\, October 28\, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.\, meeting at 9:45 a.m. We will explore trails through the wild parts of the property\, identify and discuss native plants\, and observe birds and animal tracks in the context of local ecology. This walk is part of the Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve “Oaktober” series focusing on the native oak trees on the property. I will give special attention to the Coast Live Oaks (Quercus agrifolia) and their important role as a cornerstone species in the local ecosystem. \nThis event is a perfect fit with my personal mission to open a space for people to connect with the natural world\, starting with the plant community. And Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve is an amazing place! In fact\, it was featured in an L. A. Times article on “The 16 Most Beautiful and Inviting Public Gardens in Southern California.” And it was recently included in the RedBook Magazine list of “The 12 Most Beautiful Botanical Gardens in the United States.” \nThe $35 cost includes a $10 donation to benefit the CEF\, the non-profit steward of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. The donation portion of the fee is tax-deductible. Space is limited so please register today by email to taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com. \nI will have my mobile bookshop onsite after the walk\, including my new book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, and Milt McAuley’s classic Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains which features every plant we will see. \nPlease plan on leaving dogs and cigarettes at home. Thanks! \nPlease note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF)\, stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve as one of their “Oaktober” events. They are handling all registrations. To register for the event\, please visit this page or email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com.  \nRegistrants will receive an email from CEF with detailed directions. The PayPal cost includes their fee. If you prefer\, when you register you may request instructions for mailing a check for $35/person. After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee.\nREGISTER\nOn Sunday\, October 22\, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. we will return to the beautiful Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park\, also known as El Estero\, a rare salt wetland in Southern California. Nearly destroyed by development\, the remaining estuary was restored in the late 1990s by a group of concerned citizens along with the City of Carpinteria\, UCSB\, and the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County. Completed in 1997\, the 8-acre portion of the marsh owned by the City of Carpinteria was renamed the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park. \n \nThe park includes walking trails and interpretive signage. It is home to hundreds of migrating birds and other wildlife\, including exotic sharks\, rays and native fish when conditions are right. Depending on the tide level we may be able to see marine wildlife like the Guitarnose Shovelfish and Round Stingrays shown above in John Brant’s photo from our walk there in 2021. We chose a date with favorable tides so we’re keeping our fingers crossed. \nCalifornia Statice AKA Sea-Lavender (Limonium californium)\nWhether or not we see any marine life\, there is a great variety of edible and medicinal plants of the Coastal Strand and Coastal Sage Scrub plant communities for us to see and learn from. Interesting and useful native plants there include Blue Elderberry\, California Blackberry\, Grindelia\, Lemonade Berry\, Mugwort\, Pickleweed\, California Statice\, Wild Rose\, and Coastal Sagebrush. \nThis walk is presented under a license from the City of Carpinteria. Due to the sensitivity of the habitat\, dogs are prohibited here. No smoking\, please. \nCopies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, will be on hand for sale and signing before and after the walk. \n \nREGISTRATION:\nPlease use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal link at the bottom of this page to secure your space. SUMMARY:Fall Equinox Walkabout at Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Alexandra Nicklin: Four Directions Circle at the Vista on Taft Nature Preserve\n\nPlease note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF)\, stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. They are handling all registrations. To register for the event\, please visit TaftGardens.org or email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com. \n\nRegistrants will receive an email from CEF with detailed directions. Please do not try to find the venue by using other maps or GPS. Allow plenty of time to find the venue and to make your way up the miles-long driveway.\n\nPlease join me for a Fall Equinox Walkabout at Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve on Sunday\, September 24\, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. “Walkabout” is an Australian term for a temporary return to traditional Aboriginal life\, taken especially between periods of work or residence in modern society and usually involving a period of travel through the bush. That is what I have planned for you in observance of the fall equinox\, although for a much shorter time than the traditional Australian journey and as a group instead of solo.\n\nOur walkabout will begin in the Australian section of the Gardens and make its way through the wild plant communities in the Nature Preserve to the Four Directions Circle\, a replica of a Native American medicine wheel on a mesa with a 360 degree view. There we will interact with the four directions as we connect with the annual solar cycle and our own ancestral origins somewhere on Planet Earth.\n\nAs I do on my monthly Natural History walks at the Taft Ranch\, I will identify and discuss useful plants and observe birds and animal signs in the context of the local ecology. My intention is to create a space for people to connect with the natural world by learning the language of nature.\n\nABOUT TAFT GARDENS & NATURE PRESERVE:\nA project of the nonprofit Conservation Endowment Fund\, Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve was described for years as one of Ojai’s best-kept secrets. Not anymore! This botanical gem was featured last year in an L. A. Times article on “The 16 Most Beautiful and Inviting Public Gardens in Southern California” and recently included in the RedBook Magazine list of “The 12 Most Beautiful Botanical Gardens in the United States.” \n\nABOUT LANNY KAUFER:\nLanny Kaufer has been leading herb walks and nature hikes\, as well as foraging and medicinal plant workshops\, since 1976\, focusing on ethnobotany\, the academic term for the human uses of plants. He is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California\, published by Falcon Guides in December of 2021 and now in its third printing. Copies will be available for sale and signing after the walkabout. Lanny is the founder and director of the Ojai Herbal Symposium\, returning the weekend of November 11-12\, 2023.\n\nPlease note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF)\, stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. They are handling all registrations. To register for the event\, please visit TaftGardens.org or email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com. \n\nRegistrants will receive an email from CEF with detailed directions. Please do not try to find the venue by using other maps or GPS. Allow plenty of time to find the venue and to make your way up the miles-long driveway.

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Walkabout at Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Australian bottle tree  (Brachychiton rupestris) at Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve \nPlease note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF)\, stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. They are handling all registrations. To register for the event\, please visit TaftGardens.org or email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com.  \nRegistrants will receive an email from CEF with detailed directions. Please do not try to find the venue by using other maps or GPS. Allow plenty of time to find the venue and to make your way up the miles-long driveway. \nPlease join me\, Ojai author-naturalist Lanny Kaufer\, for a Summer Solstice Walkabout at Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve on Saturday\, June 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. “Walkabout” is an Australian term for a temporary return to traditional Aboriginal life\, taken especially between periods of work or residence in modern society and usually involving a period of travel through the bush. That is what I have planned for you in observance of the summer solstice. We will take a break from modern life for 3 hours to experience Nature as our own aboriginal ancestors did\, although for a much shorter time than the traditional Australian journey and as a group instead of solo. \nOur walkabout will begin in the Australian section of the Gardens and make its way through the wild plant communities in the Nature Preserve to the Four Directions Circle\, a replica of a Native American medicine wheel on a mesa with a 360 degree view. There we will greet the Summer Solstice Sun and the four directions as we reconnect with our own aboriginal origins. \nThe Four Directions Circle at Taft Nature Preserve. Photo: Alexandra Nicklin \nAs I do on my monthly Natural History walks at the Taft Ranch\, I will identify and discuss useful plants and observe birds and animal signs in the context of the local ecology. My intention is to create a space for people to connect with the natural world by learning the language of Nature. \nABOUT TAFT GARDENS & NATURE PRESERVE:\nA project of the nonprofit Conservation Endowment Fund\, Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve was described for years as one of Ojai’s best-kept secrets. Not anymore! This botanical gem was featured last year in an L. A. Times article on “The 16 Most Beautiful and Inviting Public Gardens in Southern California” and recently included in the RedBook Magazine list of “The 12 Most Beautiful Botanical Gardens in the United States.”  \nABOUT LANNY KAUFER:\nLanny Kaufer has been leading herb walks and nature hikes\, as well as foraging and medicinal plant workshops\, since 1976\, focusing on ethnobotany\, the academic term for the human uses of plants. He is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California\, published by Falcon Guides in December of 2021 and now in its third printing. Kaufer is the founder and director of the Ojai Herbal Symposium\, returning the weekend of November 11-12\, 2023. Read more about him at this page. \nTo register for the event\, please visit TaftGardens.org or email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com.

The Montecito Journal describes it as “one of Santa Barbara’s most significant treasures.” Since the Alisal Fire swept through it in October of 2021\, it also serves as an example of the amazing regenerative power of Nature. On June 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\, we’ll return to observe how the land is regaining its legendary status as “the jewel of the Gaviota Coast.” \nThe Alisal Fire approaching Arroyo Hondo. Photo: Land Trust for Santa Barbara County \nWe’ll look in the creekside riparian habitat for the resprouting and re-emergence of Southern California native trees\, including White Alder\, California Bay\, Blue Elderberry\, Bigleaf Maple\, and Coast Live Oak. Where the tree canopy used to be\, we’ll seek out signs of the return of shade-loving native plants and herbs like Giant Horsetail\, Gooseberry\, Hummingbird Sage\, Maidenhair Fern and Giant Chain Fern. \nCarrizo Grass returning on Day 52. After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee.\nREGISTER\nI invite you to join me and professional herbalist Carol Wade in Ojai on Saturday\, June 10\, at her Earth Island Medicinal Herb Garden for a 6-hour\, early summer outdoor workshop to appreciate this amazing garden and gain hands-on experience of the many ways plant medicine lends itself to whole body/mind health. In addition to founding and maintaining the Garden\, in 2016 Carol founded the Ojai School of Herbal Studies\, a 22-month herbal studies program that utilizes the garden\, hands on medicine making\, and an in-depth education in how to use herbs safely and effectively\, including terminology\, plant chemistry\, anatomy and physiology\, an extensive materia medica\, and actual herb cultivation. This workshop will be a sample of what her students experience. \nYou will spend the morning exploring this East End Ojai jewel with me and Carol as your guides. You’ll enjoy the beautiful vistas as you learn about how to grow and care for some of the many native and non-native herbal allies that live in the Garden.  We’ll gather a few that are just right for the season and prepare a sun tea under Carol’s direction. We’ll also learn the properties of plants that will be used in the afternoon hands-on processing part of the workshop. After lunch (not included) you will make an herbal sunscreen and an insect repellant to take home. There may be another project\, dictated by which plants are at their prime on June 10. A number of plants in the Garden can be found in my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California. More details about the day’s schedule will be described in a confirmation email sent to registrants. \nDreamed up long ago and finally made a reality in 2012\, the Earth Island Medicinal Herb Garden has taken years of intense work by Carol and her students to become the gorgeous landmark it is today. Since ground was first broken in 2012\, the garden has truly blossomed\, becoming a must-see stop for visitors and a place of respite and renewal for locals. With breathtaking views of the valley’s encompassing mountains\, the garden was conceived as a showpiece\, educational tool\, and medicinal resource in one. Designed in the shape of a nautilus shell\, the 11 main beds in the garden represent the major body systems\, and each is planted with specimen herbs from around the world specially suited to supporting and healing those systems. Above the nautilus is a sunburst row of production beds\, with plants for future harvest and use in tinctures\, salves\, oils and other preparations. \nABOUT CAROL WADE:\nCarol Wade has been practicing as an herbalist and nutritional counselor for over 25 years and is a Registered Herbalist with the American Herbalists Guild. She studied health education and nutritional counseling at the Gary Null Health and Nutrition Program in New York\, and she is a graduate of the Herbal Therapeutics Study Program and the Herbal Therapeutics Graduate Clinical Program of the Herbalist Therapeutics Research Foundation\, founded and directed by herbalist and ethnobotanist David Winston. \nHer garden\, the Earth Island Medicinal Herb Garden in Ojai\, California\, serves as a hub for several medicinal herb-oriented ventures that bring the idea of using medicinal herbs in daily living as a viable and logical choice to the community at large. \nIn 2016 Carol founded the Ojai School of Herbal Studies\, a 22-month herbal studies program that utilizes the garden\, hands on medicine making\, and an in-depth education in how to use herbs safely and effectively\, including terminology\, plant chemistry\, anatomy and physiology\, an extensive materia medica\, and actual herb cultivation. \nABOUT LANNY KAUFER:\nLanny Kaufer has been leading Herb Walks in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties since 1976\, educating hundreds of locals and visitors on the flora of the area with a focus on herbs that can be used for food and medicine. As an herbal educator\, Lanny also leads workshops and presentations throughout the Ojai-Ventura-Santa Barbara area on the edible and medicinal uses of California plants. He holds a degree in Biology from UC Santa Cruz and is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants (Falcon Guides\, 2021). \nPlease be sure to use the REGISTER link below or at the top of the page before clicking on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee.\nREGISTER\nPlease join me and special guest Professor Emeritus Jim Adams of USC School of Pharmacy for a Spring Medicinal Plant Workshop in Ojai on Saturday\, May 6\, 2023\, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dr. Adams has been a frequent and popular contributor to my events for the past ten years. Now that he has moved to the Bay Area he will be making less frequent visits to Ojai\, probably just once or twice a year. So I encourage you to be sure to register before it fills up. \nThis workshop is based on Jim’s ground-breaking pharmacological studies on local native plants and his personal commitment to sharing the traditional medicinal practices he learned from Chumash healer Cecilia Garcia. Jim will be joined by plant educator Enrique Villaseñor and acupuncturist Michelle Wong\, co-authors with him of Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West: Cultural and Scientific Basis for Their Use\, Fourth Edition. \n\nThe morning plant walk will take place at Cluff Vista Park and the Chumash Garden at Ojai Valley Museum\, two native plant demonstration gardens in downtown Ojai. Dr. Adams and his colleagues will identify and discuss the medicinal and spiritual uses of a variety of native plants. The afternoon hands-on preparation session will be held in Fisher Hall at St. Andrews Episcopal Church\, also in downtown Ojai. After the workshop\, participants will receive a follow-up email with a complete list of all plants that are identified or utilized as well as recipes and other info. \n\n\n \n\n\nThe morning outing from 9 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. will be a slow-paced walk that will involve stopping by the plants for periods of time. A lightweight campstool could be useful for those who are uncomfortable standing. After a 1- hour break\, the afternoon session from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. will focus on preparing seasonal edible and medicinal products from wild foraged plant material. Participants will be able to soak their feet in pain-relieving black sage tea and go home with their own jar of sagebrush liniment that they prepared themselves.. Seasonal plants and healing products to be featured may include\, among others:\n\n\n\nElderflowers\nWhite Sage\nMugwort\nSagebrush liniment\nBlack Sage foot soak\nNopal (Prickly-Pear) smoothie\n\nAt 3:00 p.m. Dr. Adams\, Enrique\, and Michelle will sign copies of their book and I will sign copies of mine\, Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants. \n\nABOUT JAMES ADAMS\, PH.D:\nDr. Adams brings to Ojai a wealth of scientific knowledge and field experience as well as a singular perspective on herbal medicine. As he tells it\, “My family came to Virginia in 1635 and has always survived by using American Indian healing. On the frontier\, there were no doctors. American Indian healing was better than European medicine anyway. I continue this tradition.”\n\n\n\nDr. Adams is the co-author\, with Michelle Wong and Enrique Villaseñor\, of the fourth edition of the groundbreaking book\, Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West: Cultural and Scientific Basis for Their Use. The cultural portion is based on the teachings of Cecilia Garcia and the scientific portion on Dr. Adams’ laboratory studies. It can be purchased beforehand at that link and will also be available for purchase and signing at the event.\n\n\n\n  \nAs an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Southern California for 32 years\, Dr. Adams taught  pharmacy students\, medical students\, doctors and other healthcare professionals while researching the natural pharmaceutical compounds in native plants. He has over 200 publications.\n\n\n\n  \nRunning parallel with his academic career\, Dr. Adams has worked with the Chumash people since 1998 and studied Chumash healing with Cecilia Garcia for almost 15 years. In addition to the book\,  they collaborated on 30 journal articles. Jim is now the carrier of the healing knowledge passed to him by his teacher.\n\n  \n“Humans have used plant medicines ever since humans came into existence\, about 200\,000 years ago\,” Dr. Adams explains in Healing with Medicinal Plants. “That means that our ancestors experienced an intense natural selection. Those who responded to plant medicines survived and passed their genes on. We are the products of this natural selection. Our bodies are designed to respond to plant medicines.”\n\n\n  \nHere is an excellent 2017 article about Dr. Adams from USCStorySpace.com: “A Scientist’s Calling to Practice Chumash Healing.”\n\n\nREGISTRATION: \n\n\n\nPlease note: This workshop will go on RAIN OR SHINE with the exception of a heavy downpour in the morning and/or a 100% chance of heavy rain that day. No dogs or smoking\, please.Paid registrants will receive a confirmation email a few days prior to the workshop with all necessary info\, including weather forecast and parking directions\,  They also will receive a follow-up email afterwards with a list of all plants identified and used\, recipes\, and more. \nThe cost for the workshop\, including all materials\, is $100. Please use the REGISTER link at top and bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal button. Please note: online payment includes PayPal fee. After that we will make every effort to fill your space but cannot guarantee it.\nREGISTER\nJoin me and famed author/forager/survivalist Christopher Nyerges on Saturday\, April 15\, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Ojai for an Outdoor Survival Skills workshop based on the book of the same name by legendary survival expert Larry Dean Olsen. Christopher edited the recent 2021 7th Edition of this classic. The workshop will begin with a morning plant walk on Euterpe Farms\, overlooking the Ventura River Preserve. The afternoon workshop will take place under an oak tree. Everyone will have a chance to participate in all activities. \nParticipants will: \n\nlearn to identify edible\, medicinal and otherwise useful plants of the season\npractice making cordage and soap from yucca leaves\nobserve the most basic primitive fire-starting methods: the hand drill and bow drill\nprepare a cooked prickly-pear cactus salad using the primitive fire\nlearn principles of finding and purifying water\, especially in dry areas\n\nAttendees will have the opportunity to try starting a primitive fire with expert supervision. Time permitting\, participants may also learn a few simple animal traps\, such as snares and deadfalls. There may be other activities\, depending on seasonal foods and supplies available.  Christopher will have copies of his books for sale and signing. I will have my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, available as well. \nChristopher writes of Olsen: “Anyone who has been teaching outdoor survival skills for any length of time has undoubtedly heard of Larry Dean Olsen…After Olsen graduated from Brigham Young University\, he began teaching survival field trips through the college’s Continuing Education Division in 1968\, sharing his love for the outdoors\, and his intense interest in the skills of the local indigenous peoples…As part of his outdoor training\, he would take students into the desert of the Great Basin area and live off the land for a week or longer. They had to learn how to eat wild plants\, trap small game\, make fire with local materials\, build a shelter\, weave sandals\, find water\, and more. It was a grueling adventure. He wrote Outdoor Survival Skills\, first published in 1967\, which described all the survival skills he’d been teaching. His book has long been considered the definitive classic book on the subject. The book has been updated every few years and remained in print all these years.…Larry was perhaps the most visible person teaching and sharing the extreme art of living off the land.  It is not an overstatement to say that everyone today teaching these skills has some lineage\, direct or indirect\, that leads back to Larry Dean Olsen.” \nChristopher Nyerges is an author\, forager\, survivalist and ethnobotanist with a lifelong interest in how native peoples lived off the land. He has been teaching classes and leading field trips since 1974 to over 40\,000 students. Nyerges has authored nearly two dozen books\, including Foraging California\, Guide to Wild Foods\,  Nuts and Berries of California\, How to Survive Anywhere\, Extreme Simplicity\, and many others. As mentioned above\, Chicago Review Press\, the publishers of Larry Dean Olsen’s Outdoor Survival Skills\, asked Christopher to lightly edit the 7th edition of this classic book and add color photos and a new foreword. \nIn recent years\, Christopher was the editor of American Survival Guide magazine and served as editor of Wilderness Way magazine for 7 years. He has written several thousand newspaper and magazine articles in such publications as the Los Angeles Times\, Pasadena Star News\, Pasadena Weekly\, Whole Life Times\, Countryside\, Mother Earth News\, Acres USA\, American  Survival Guide\, and others. \nChristopher has appeared on the late Huell Howser’s public television series on California\, KCET’s “Life and Times\,” and National Geographic’s “Doomsday Preppers.” For two years\, he appeared on Fox TV’s “X Show\,” where he demonstrated survival skills on the streets of Los Angeles. He currently serves as a consultant to the “Naked and Afraid” show on Discovery.  Christopher Nyerges’ web site is SchoolofSelf-Reliance.com. \nREGISTRATION INFO:\nPlease note: This workshop will go on RAIN OR SHINE with the exception of a heavy downpour in the morning and/or a 100% chance of heavy rain that day. SUMMARY:Wetland Walk at Ojai Meadows Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Ojai Valley Land Conservancy \nPlease use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal link at the bottom of the page to secure your space. The PayPal cost includes their fee. If you prefer\, when you register you may request instructions for mailing a check for $25/person.\nIf the event sells out\, PayPal will not accept your payment. After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee. \nREGISTER\nThere’s not been a better time in recent memory to experience the wetland at the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy’s Ojai Meadows Preserve. Please join me and my wife Rondia for a leisurely nature walk on the historic wetland on Sunday\, April 2\, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. We’ll identify native plants that have been used for centuries by the Chumash and other Indigenous people of California for shelter\, food\, medicine\, fiber\, ceremony and much more. Gardeners will discover how these plants can be used in home yard and garden landscapes. We’ll view first-hand the many benefits of the preservation and restoration of this special piece of land by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy  (OVLC). In the main pond at the lowest spot in the wetland\, we’ll see waterfowl and typical wetland plants such as tules and cattails. This winter’s rains have brought up several smaller vernal pools as well. This walk is presented under a Special Use Permit from OVLC. \nFor decades the wetland was buried under sediment and fill dirt from nearby construction. A grove of non-native Eucalyptus trees was planted in the 1950s\, negating the possibility of native habitat returning on its own. The property also was threatened with the possibility of a shopping center and parking lots. The meadows were acquired in 2000 by OVLC with an outpouring of community support to protect them. Most of the $1.35M came from 140 citizens and businesses\, who demonstrated their commitment to preserving the meadows’ natural beauty. Flood waters from Nordhoff High School and Maricopa Highway were diverted onto the meadows bringing wildlife back to the area. Native plant restoration is an ongoing project. \nSame section of highway AFTER diversion of water into historical wetland at Ojai Meadows Preserve. A number of plants that we will meet can be found in the book. I’ll also have Milt McAuley’s classic Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains which includes every plant we’ll see. \nPaid registrants will receive a confirmation email with parking directions\, what to bring\, etc. Afterwards\, they will get a follow-up email with a list of all plants and wildlife seen. The Montecito Journal describes it as “one of Santa Barbara’s most significant treasures.” Now that the Alisal Fire swept through it in October of 2021\, it also serves as an example of the amazing regenerative power of Nature. On April 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\, I’ll return for the first spring visit since the fire to observe how the land is regaining its legendary status as “the jewel of the Gaviota Coast.” \nThe Alisal Fire approaching Arroyo Hondo. A number of the plants that we’ll meet can be found in the book. I’ll also have Milt McAuley’s classic Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains which includes every plant we’ll see. \nThe cost for the walk is $40. Senior\, student and child discounts are available by request. The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County also requests a suggested $10 donation at the site to cover stewardship of the land. Once registered\, attendees will receive an email during the week prior to the walk with more information and directions to Arroyo Hondo. No dogs or smoking are allowed. \nParticipants will receive an email afterwards with notes and a complete list of all plants and wildlife observed. \nPlease be sure to use the REGISTER link below before returning to this page to click on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space.
