Turn your wishing into learning on Saturday\, February 18\, 2023\, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. when Herb Walks with Lanny Kaufer hosts a workshop in Ojai with acclaimed forager/chef Jess Starwood\, author of Mushroom Wanderland: A Forager’s Guide to Finding\, Identifying\, and Using More Than 25 Wild Fungi!. (Just click on that link to order the book now.) We’ll visit a diverse Ojai habitat that is home to several species of fungi and native plants. Of course\, we can’t guarantee which mushrooms we’ll find as that is unpredictable\, dependent on rainfall\, weather\, and other factors. Not to worry\, though. Jess will bring dried samples from her pantry to fill in the gaps. \nWe’ll start out at 9 a.m. at the Ojai Meadows Preserve for some plant ID and mushroom foraging. At 12 noon we’ll move indoors to Fisher Hall at St. Andrews Episcopal Church for a wild food lunch demonstration\, followed by more learning and hands-on activities in the afternoon. At 3 pm. my mobile bookshop will be open for purchasing either title and many more. Jess and I will be on hand to sign our respective books. \nPlease note: This will be Jess’s only Ojai workshop during mushroom season this year and it’s filling up fast. All three of her 2022 mushroom workshops sold out so don’t delay if you want to be able to participate in this very special event. \n \nABOUT JESS STARWOOD:\nJess Starwood is a forager\, plant-based chef\, and herbalist. She is the author and photographer of Mushroom Wanderland: A Forager’s Guide to Finding\, Identifying\, and Using 25 Wild Fungi! and leads wild food and herbalism classes\, workshops\, and immersive wild food adventures all across the country and in Mexico. She has a Master of Science degree in Herbal Medicine from the American College of Healthcare Sciences and has worked as a forager and consultant with several Michelin-starred restaurants in Los Angeles. \nJess’s website is at www.jstarwood.com. She can be found on Instagram @jess.starwood. She hosts events at Cat+Raven Collective in Thousand Oaks. \nABOUT LANNY KAUFER:\nLanny Kaufer has been leading Herb Walks in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties since 1976\, educating scores of locals and visitors on the flora of the area with a focus on herbs that can be used for food and medicine. As an herbal educator\, Lanny also leads workshops and presentations throughout the Ojai-Ventura-Santa Barbara area on the edible and medicinal uses of California plants. He is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants\, published by Falcon Guides in December 2021. \nLanny earned a biology degree at the University of California where he completed independent studies in naturopathic medicine under physiology professor Dr. Henry Hilgard. Lanny is a faculty member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at California State University\, Channel Islands. He served as chief consultant on medicinal plants for the redesign of the Swimmer Medicinal Garden in Playa Vista. \nPlease be sure to use the REGISTER link below or at the bottom of the page before clicking on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. If you prefer\, when you register you may request instructions for mailing a check for $35/person. Once registered you will receive a confirmation email with directions\, what to bring\, etc.\nIf the event sells out\, PayPal will not accept your payment. After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee. \nREGISTER\nOn Sunday evening\, February 5\, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.\, I’ll lead a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the near-simultaneous sunset and moonrise.  Both will happen between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. FACTOID: Astronomers classify the February 5 Full Moon as a “Micromoon” because it occurs at apogee\, the point in the Moon’s orbit farthest away from Earth. As timeanddate.com explains\, the Moon orbits Earth in an elliptical path\, which means one side of the path is closer to the Earth than the other. The point in the Moon’s orbit closest to Earth is called perigee\, while the point in the orbit farthest from Earth is known as apogee. When a Full Moon or a New Moon occurs around apogee\, it’s called a Micromoon\, Minimoon or Apogee Moon because it appears to be smaller. A Full or New Moon that occurs around perigee is called a Supermoon. \nWe’ll meet at the trailhead at 3:45 p.m. for a 4:00 p.m. start\, then gradually hike about 1.5 miles to the viewing site\, experiencing some elevation gain on a well-worn\, dirt fire road with uneven footing in places. Along the way we’ll stop to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants\, including: \nBlack & Purple Sage\nBlue Elderberry\nCoastal Sagebrush\nHorehound and\nToyon \nWe’ll also identify Poison Oak. \nAfter witnessing the sunset and moonrise\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead at about 7:00 p.m. I will have copies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, for sale and signing before and after the hike. \nHeavy rain or chance of thunderstorms will cancel event. \nREGISTRATION INFO:\nThe cost of the hike is $35. Please note: the PayPal payment will include their fee. Once you register you will receive instructions to mail a check if you prefer not to use PayPal. Paid reservations are refundable up to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday\, February 2. After that\, if I receive your cancellation with enough time to fill your space and I’m able to do so\, you will receive a refund or credit. \nSenior\, student and child discounts are available by request. Paid registrants will receive a confirmation email prior to the hike with all necessary info\, including weather forecast and parking directions.  They will also receive a follow-up email afterwards with a list of all plants and wildlife seen and other notes. \nNo dogs or smoking\, please. \nREGISTER\nPlease use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal link at the bottom of the page to secure your space. This one is a warm-up for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners\, featuring delicious dishes you may want to serve at your holiday feast. It’s built around mustard greens\, an essential ingredient of Southern cuisine that can be wild-foraged in our area. Locally-sourced herbs will be sprinkled throughout the menu\, which includes: \n\nRoasted Turkey Breast with Dressing and Gravy\nThree Greens with Cornbread\nSweet Potato Tart\nHot and Cold Beverages\n\nA special side dish of Shrimp & Grits will be available by advance request for an extra $5 charge. The dinner will be served in Fisher Hall at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Ojai. \nQuestions? Please email register@herbwalks.com. \nABOUT RONDIA KAUFER:\nBorn in Texas while her father served in the Air Force\, Rondia was raised in her parents’ hometown of Chicago. But the story of her cooking begins in Mississippi where her parents grew up. \n“The first thing I remember about cooking is dissecting a whole chicken\,” Rondia told me. “My mother would always make fried chicken on Sundays. She had to buy whole chickens because it was cheaper and she would always buy two to feed us all. By then I had two younger brothers\, one younger sister\, an older half-brother\, and my mother was pregnant. I would stand on a chair and watch her or Grandma Alma dissect the chickens in the kitchen sink. \n“When I got older\, my mother would guide me with the chicken dissecting and then I would watch the rest: how she coated the chicken and fried it in a big skillet. Boy\, did it smell good with all the seasoning she would put in her batter! Later she taught me how to tell if the chicken was done. My mother would always cook rice and gravy with the fried chicken. Grandma Alma would have me help her make biscuits. That’s how I learned to make biscuits from scratch. So there’s the first Mississippi meal I made standing on a chair over the stove: fried chicken\, rice\, gravy and biscuits for eight.” \nAs a teenager\, Rondia was the designated chef for her musical family’s’ popular backyard barbecues. When the chicken and ribs came off the grill\, she turned in her apron for a red electric guitar. As Rondia and her brothers played the Isaac Hayes hit\, “Theme from Shaft\,” Rondia’s culinary and musical reputation spread through the neighborhood\, granting her a kind of immunity from the gang violence that made the Cabrini-Green project a national symbol of all that was wrong with inner city housing. \nIn her second life after moving to California\, raising her kids\, and retiring from the nursing profession\, Rondia became known locally in Ojai for the fried chicken she served at the Bowlful of Blues and her barbecued chicken wings at the Ojai Mardi Gras. She also had a guest chef stint at the World Flavor Cafe in Ojai\, competed in the Mess O’ Greens contest in Oxnard\, served food for the Ojai and Ventura County Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations\, and otherwise provides what she calls “Southern comfort food” at private parties. \nRondia resumed her childhood grilling persona when she visited relatives in Chicago.\nRondia presenting her legendary sweet potato pies at a family holiday dinner.\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCancellation policy: I will refund your payment or issue a credit if you notify me up to 72 hours before the start of the event. Instead\, if we shift our perception\, this is the abundant season for seeds\, nuts\, acorns and roots. \nIn this full day workshop on Saturday\, October 29\, we will enjoy a mindful walk in the morning in Matilija Canyon among the oak\, white alder\, black walnut and bay trees\, noticing how the plants and environment change during this season. We will discuss sustainable foraging and identify edible and medicinal plants and mushrooms that can help to nourish and heal us in the months to come. \n\nCalifornia Bay nuts. Photo: Jess Starwood\nAfter our morning walk\, we will gather in Fisher Hall at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in downtown Ojai for a wild food lunch\, beverages\, and a cooking demonstration featuring some of the ingredients we encountered in the morning. We will then have a hands-on activity making California bay nut chocolate and other tasty fall treats. Afterwards\, Jess and I will have our books on hand for sale and signing. \nABOUT JESS STARWOOD:\nJess Starwood is a forager\, plant-based chef\, and herbalist. This workshop is based on his ground-breaking pharmacological studies on local native plants and his personal commitment to sharing the traditional medicinal practices he learned from Chumash healer Cecilia Garcia. He will be joined by plant educator Enrique Villaseñor and acupuncturist Michelle Wong\, co-authors with him of Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West: Cultural and Scientific Basis for Their Use. Participants will learn how to make California plant medicines\, how to process foraged foods\, and the history of California Indians. \nThe workshop will be held at two locations. The morning outing from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. will be a slow-paced walk at Cluff Vista Park native plant garden and the Chumash Garden at the Ojai Valley Museum identifying and discussing local medicinal plants. It will involve stopping for discussion for periods of time. A lightweight campstool could be useful for those who are uncomfortable standing for periods of time. \nLeft to right\, co-presenters Enrique Villaseñor\, Jim Adams\, and Michelle Wong introducing the Summer 2020 Medicinal Plant Workshop at Euterpe Farms in Ojai. \nAfter a one-hour lunch break\, the afternoon hands-on session from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. will take place at a local church kitchen. The focus will be on preparing seasonal edible and medicinal products for winter health from wild foraged plant material. Depending on seasonal availability\, plant preparations onsite may include\, among others: \n\nYerba Santa tea and steam inhalation\nAcorn dish\nWild California Buckwheat pancakes\nGordolobo tea\nDatura hand soak\nBlack walnuts\nPrickly-Pear fruits (“tunas”)\n\n  \nAt 3:00 p.m. Dr. Adams and his co-authors will have copies of their book for sale and signing.  I will have Medicinal Herbs of California on hand as well. Following the workshop\, participants will receive by email a complete list of all plants that are identified and/or utilized as well as recipes and other notes. \n  \nABOUT JAMES ADAMS\, PH.D: \nDr. Adams brings to Ojai a wealth of scientific knowledge and field experience as well as a singular perspective on herbal medicine. As he tells it\, “My family came to Virginia in 1635 and has always survived by using American Indian healing. On the frontier\, there were no doctors. American Indian healing was better than European medicine anyway. I continue this tradition.” \nNow retired from active teaching and enjoying his new status as Professor Emeritus\, Dr. Adams taught pharmacy students\, medical students\, doctors and other healthcare professionals for over 30 years at USC while researching the natural pharmaceutical compounds in native plants. He has over 200 publications. \nRunning parallel with his academic career\, Dr. Adams has worked with the Chumash people of the San Fernando Valley since 1998 and studied Chumash healing with Cecilia Garcia for almost 15 years. They wrote a book and 30 journal articles together. Jim is now the carrier of the healing knowledge passed to him by his teacher. \nDr. Adams is the co-author\, with Michelle Wong and Enrique Villaseñor\, of the fourth edition of the groundbreaking book\, Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West: Cultural and Scientific Basis for Their Use. The cultural information is based on the teachings of Cecilia Garcia and the scientific portion on Dr. Adams’ laboratory studies. It can be purchased beforehand at that link and will also be available for purchase and signing at the event. \n“Humans have used plant medicines ever since humans came into existence\, about 200\,000 years ago\,” Dr. Adams explains in Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West. “That means that our ancestors experienced an intense natural selection. Those who responded to plant medicines survived and passed their genes on. We are the products of this natural selection. Our bodies are designed to respond to plant medicines.” \nHere is an excellent 2017 article about Dr. Adams from USCStorySpace.com: “A Scientist’s Calling to Practice Chumash Healing.” \nPlease note: This workshop will go on RAIN OR SHINE unless there is a steady downpour in the morning and/or a 100% chance of heavy rain that day. No dogs or smoking\, please. \nThe cost for the Fall Medicinal Plant Workshop is $100\, including all materials for preparing plant medicines. A limited number of scholarships for pharmacy\, medical\, and herbal medicine students are available as well as discounts for children under 18 accompanied by an adult. \nPlease be sure to use the REGISTER link below before returning to this page to click on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. Note: Online payment includes a PayPal fee. To avoid that\, when you register you can request instructions for mailing a payment of $100/person.\nIf the event sells out\, PayPal will not accept your payment. DESCRIPTION:Please be sure to use the REGISTER link below before returning to this page and clicking on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. Note: Online payment includes a PayPal fee. If you prefer\, you may mail a check. When you register you will receive mailing instructions.\nREGISTER\nOn Sunday\, October 2\, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. we will visit the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park\, also known as El Estero\, a rare salt wetland in Southern California. Nearly destroyed by development\, the remaining estuary was restored in the late 1990s by a group of concerned citizens along with the City of Carpinteria\, UCSB\, and the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County. Completed in 1997\, the 8-acre portion of the marsh owned by the City of Carpinteria was renamed the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park. \nShovelnose Guitarfish and Round Stingrays seen from the bridge in the Salt Marsh on July 11\, 2021. Photo: John Brant \nThe park includes walking trails and interpretive signage. It is home to hundreds of migrating birds and other wildlife\, including exotic sharks\, rays and native fish when conditions are right. This event is scheduled to coincide with the right time of year and tide level to be able to see the marine wildlife. We shall see if the best laid plans of mice and men prevail. No guarantees. \nThere also is a great variety of edible and medicinal plants of the Coastal Strand and Coastal Sage Scrub plant communities which\, predictably\, will be there for us to see and learn from. Useful native plants there include Blue Elderberry\, California Blackberry\, Grindelia\, Lemonade Berry\, Mugwort\, Pickleweed\, Wild Rose\, and Coastal Sagebrush. \nDue to the sensitivity of the habitat\, dogs are prohibited here. No smoking\, please. \nCopies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, will be on hand for sale and signing before and after the walk. \nREGISTRATION:\nThe cost for the walk is $35. Photo: Lanny Kaufer \nOn Sunday\, September 18\, 2022\, I will lead my 10th annual Fall Equinox Nature Hike in the peaceful Mixed Conifer Forest on the “sky island” known as Pine Mountain (elevation: 7000 feet). I promise that first time visitors to this area will be surprised and delighted to find a thick forest of pines\, fir and incense-cedar so close to the Ventura coast. If we’re lucky\, pine nuts will be falling as we walk. \nAccording to Craig Carey\, author of Hiking and Backpacking Santa Barbara and Ventura\, the Reyes Peak Trail along the northern slope of the peak is “quite simply one of the most beautiful stretches in the southern Los Padres.” \nBiogeographers include Pine Mountain in a select group of “sky islands\,” defined as isolated mountains surrounded by radically different lowland environments. We can expect to see several high-altitude plants and trees like White Fir and Sugar Pine more commonly found in the Southern Sierra Nevada mountains. Weather and marine layer permitting\, we will have panoramic views of the Cuyama Valley to the north and the Channel Islands to the south. \nRondia and friends enjoying lunch. Photo: Chris Kudelka \nThe outing will start at 9:00 a.m. with a car caravan (or carpool for those open to it) of about 36 miles up Highway 33 from the Maricopa Plaza\, (1207 Maricopa Highway\, Ojai\, CA 93023) to the Reyes Peak trailhead. The last 6.5 miles include 5.5 miles on a narrow\, winding\, paved road and the very last mile on a dirt road. Trucks or SUV’s are preferred for the last stretch but most passenger cars with reasonable front axle clearance can make the drive. \nLanny examines the needles of a White Fir sapling on the Reyes Peak Trail. Photo: John Griffith \n  \n  \nWe will start walking into the Sespe Wilderness from the trailhead (where there is a restroom) at about 10:30 a.m.\, stop for lunch (not provided) in the forest\, and return to the trailhead by about 3:30 p.m.\, arriving back at the Maricopa Plaza by about 4:00 p.m. We will hike on a well-used trail through mixed conifer forest habitat\, stopping often to identify and discuss native plants\, birds and wildlife. \nThis intermediate level hike is suitable for fit\, moderately experienced hikers or physically fit beginners. There will be some elevation gain and loss skirting the north side of Reyes Peak\, sometimes traversing steep hillsides on a narrow trail. The total hiking distance will be about 3 miles. PLEASE NOTE: Those with respiratory or circulatory issues possibly affected by altitude of 7000 feet should consult with a physician before attempting this hike. \nView of the Channel Islands from Reyes Peak. Photo: Erika Klohe \nThis hike is another in a series of backcountry walks and hikes under an Operating Permit from the Ojai Ranger District Office of the U.S. Forest Service designed for guides who provide recreational and interpretive services to the public. After the hike participants will receive a detailed follow-up email including a list of all plants and wildlife identified. \nI will have copies of my new book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, with me for sale and signing before the hike. \nPLEASE NOTE: Light rain will not cancel. Heavy rain or thunderstorms will. Once you register you will receive weather updates. No dogs or smoking\, please. \nThe cost is $45. Senior and student/teen discounts are available upon request. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Kids 6-12 can go at half-price\, one per adult\, pending request and approval. Children 5 years old and younger can come along for free\, also pending request and approval. Toddlers need to be in a carrier due to the nature of the trail. \nPlease use the REGISTER button below to sign up before returning to this page to complete your payment and secure your space with the PayPal button or request instructions for mailing a check for $45. \nIf the event sells out\, PayPal will not accept your payment. The Montecito Journal describes it as “one of Santa Barbara’s most significant treasures.” Now that the Alisal Fire swept through it in October of 2021\, it also serves as an example of the amazing regenerative power of Nature. On August 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\, I’ll return for the first time since the fire to observe how the land is regaining its legendary status as “the jewel of the Gaviota Coast.” \nThe Alisal Fire approaching Arroyo Hondo. Photo: Land Trust for Santa Barbara County \nWe’ll look in the creekside riparian habitat for the resprouting and re-emergence of Southern California native trees\, including White Alder\, California Bay\, Blue Elderberry\, Bigleaf Maple\, and Coast Live Oak. Where the tree canopy used to be\, we’ll seek out signs of the return of shade-loving native plants and herbs like Giant Horsetail\, Gooseberry\, Hummingbird Sage\, Maidenhair Fern and Giant Chain Fern. \nCarrizo Grass returning on Day 52. SUMMARY:Wetland Wednesday Herb Walk
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Ojai Valley Land Conservancy \nPlease use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal link at bottom of the page to secure your space. The PayPal cost includes their fee. If you prefer\, when you register you may request instructions for mailing a check for $25/person. \nREGISTER\nPlease join me and my wife Rondia for the third in a series of leisurely evening strolls on the historic wetland that is now the Ojai Meadows Preserve on Wednesday\, June 29\, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. We’ll identify native plants that have been used for centuries by the Chumash and other Indigenous people of California for shelter\, food\, medicine\, fiber\, ceremony and much more. Gardeners will discover how these plants can be used in home yard and garden landscapes. We’ll view first-hand the many benefits of the preservation and restoration of this special piece of land by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy  (OVLC). In the pond at the low spot in the wetland\, we’ll likely see waterfowl and typical wetland plants such as tules. This walk is presented under a Special Use Permit from OVLC. \nFor decades the wetland was buried under sediment and fill dirt from nearby construction. A grove of non-native Eucalyptus trees was planted in the 1950s\, negating the possibility of native habitat returning on its own. The property also was threatened with the possibility of a shopping center and parking lots. The meadows were acquired in 2000 by the OVLC with an outpouring of community support to protect them. Most of the $1.35M came from 140 citizens and businesses\, who demonstrated their commitment to preserving the meadows’ natural beauty. Flood waters from Nordhoff High School and Maricopa Highway were diverted onto the meadows bringing wildlife back to the area. Native plant restoration is an ongoing project. \nSame section of highway AFTER diversion of water into historical wetland at Ojai Meadows Preserve. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the elevation\, those with respiratory or circulatory issues possibly affected by altitude should consult with a physician before attempting this hike. \nWeather and marine layer permitting\, we will have panoramic views of the Cuyama Valley to the north and the Channel Islands to the south.  This hike is another in a series of backcountry walks and hikes under an Operating Permit from the Ojai Ranger District Office of the U.S. Forest Service designed for guides who provide recreational and interpretive services to the public. After the hike participants will receive a detailed follow-up email including a list of all plants identified. \nPLEASE NOTE: Light rain will not cancel. Heavy rain or thunderstorms will. Once you register you will receive weather updates\, directions and other info about what to wear\, etc. \nMy 2021 book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, will be available at the meeting place in the morning for sale and signing. \nREGISTRATION: The cost is $45. Please use the REGISTER button at top and bottom of this page to sign up before securing your space with the PayPal button. Please note that the PayPal admission charge includes their fee. If mailing time permits\, when you register you can request instructions for mailing a check for $45 instead of using PayPal. We’ll encounter some elevation gain on a well-worn\, dirt fire road with uneven footing in places. Along the way we’ll stop to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants\, possibly including: \nBlue Elderberry\nHorehound\nBlack & Purple Sage\nCoastal Sagebrush\nPrickly-Pear \nAfter witnessing the moonrise and sunset\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead at about 8:45 p.m. \nI will have copies of my new book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, with me for sale and signing before and after the hike. \nRain or chance of thunderstorms will cancel the hike. SUMMARY:Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk at Harmon Canyon Preserve
DESCRIPTION:This event is presented by the Ventura Land Trust. Please visit this event page at their website to learn more and register for the Walk.\nThe Ventura Land Trust is partnering with me again on Saturday\, May 28\, for an easy edible and medicinal plant walk at Harmon Canyon Preserve from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. \nThe walk will include plant identification and information for the beginning to experienced botanist\, herbalist\, or anyone curious about uses of wild plants. The herb walk will cover approximately 2 miles round trip in Harmon Canyon Preserve. Many useful plants\, including Blue Elderberry\, Coast Live Oak\, Black Sage\, Purple Sage\, Sagebrush\, and Wild Fennel\, make their home in Harmon Canyon Preserve’s 2\,123 acres of land\, amid roughly 1\,000 acres of endangered coastal sage scrub. All the plants are making a visible\, and much welcomed\, comeback 4 years after the Thomas Fire devastated the area. \nI will have my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants\, available for sale and signing before and after the walk. \nAll walk participants should bring a water bottle and wear sturdy shoes\, long pants\, a hat\, and sunscreen. \n\nDirections to Harmon Canyon Preserve:\nHere is a Google map and directions to Harmon Canyon Preserve. Harmon Canyon Preserve is located at 7511 Foothill Road\, near Foothill Road and Kimball Road\, in Ventura. \nDrive west on Foothill Road from Kimball Road\, then turn right onto McVittie Place before turning right into the Preserve. Do not turn right just before McVittie Place at the sign saying 7511 Foothill Rd. That driveway will take you to a dead end in an orchard. If you approach the Preserve eastbound on Foothill Road\, you must make a u-turn at Kimball Road to access McVittie Place and the Preserve. \n\nThis event is presented by the Ventura Land Trust. Please visit this event page at their website to learn more and register for the Walk.

Join me Sunday\, May 22\, for a Nature Hike on Potrero John Creek\, deep in the Sespe Wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest. Beginning at 9 a.m.\, a 20-mile car caravan will take us from Ojai to the trailhead. We’ll return to Ojai around 3 p.m. Starting our hike at an elevation of 3700 feet\, we’ll meet a diverse group of plants representing the upper Chaparral and Riparian Woodland plant communities of Southern California. This will be an easy-to-moderate hike of about 3 miles round-trip with sections of mild elevation gain and a few short creek crossings. We’ll stop often to identify edible\, medicinal\, and otherwise useful plants. We can expect to see a number of plants not found at lower elevations\, including Bigcone Douglas-Fir\, Incense-Cedar\, Yerba Santa\, Mariposa Lily\, Giant Stinging Nettle\, and others. \nBigcone Douglas-Fir tips.
\nREGISTER\nPlease join me and my wife Rondia for the second in a series of leisurely evening strolls on the historic wetland that is now the Ojai Meadows Preserve on Wednesday\, May 18\, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. \nBefore the walk\, I will have copies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, available for sale and signing. A number of plants that we will meet can be found in the book. I’ll also have Milt McAuley’s classic Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains which includes every plant we’ll see. \nPaid registrants will receive a confirmation email with parking directions\, what to bring\, etc. Afterwards\, they will get a follow-up email with a list of all plants and wildlife seen. No dogs or smoking\, please. \nPlease use the REGISTER button at top or bottom of this page to sign up before clicking on the PayPal link at bottom of the page to secure your space.
