After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee. \nREGISTER\nOn Tuesday evening\, March 7\, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m.\, I’ll lead a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the near-simultaneous sunset and moonrise.  Both will happen around 6:30 p.m. We’ll meet at the trailhead at 4:45 p.m. for a 5:00 p.m. start\, then gradually hike about 1.5 miles to the viewing site\, experiencing some elevation gain on a well-worn\, dirt fire road with uneven footing in places. Along the way we’ll stop to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants\, including: \nBlack & Purple Sage\nBlue Elderberry\nCoastal Sagebrush\nPrickly-Pear\nHorehound and\nToyon \nWe’ll also identify Poison Oak. \nAfter witnessing the sunset and moonrise\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead at about 7:30 p.m. I will have copies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, for sale and signing before and after the hike. \nHeavy rain or chance of thunderstorms will cancel event. \nREGISTRATION INFO:\nThe cost of the hike is $35. Please join me and my wife Rondia for a leisurely nature walk on the historic wetland on Sunday\, March 5\, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. We’ll identify native plants that have been used for centuries by the Chumash and other Indigenous people of California for shelter\, food\, medicine\, fiber\, ceremony and much more. Gardeners will discover how these plants can be used in home yard and garden landscapes. We’ll view first-hand the many benefits of the preservation and restoration of this special piece of land by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy  (OVLC). In the main pond at the lowest spot in the wetland\, we’ll see waterfowl and typical wetland plants such as tules and cattails. This winter’s rains have brought up several smaller vernal pools as well. This walk is presented under a Special Use Permit from OVLC. \nFor decades the wetland was buried under sediment and fill dirt from nearby construction. A grove of non-native Eucalyptus trees was planted in the 1950s\, negating the possibility of native habitat returning on its own. The property also was threatened with the possibility of a shopping center and parking lots. The meadows were acquired in 2000 by OVLC with an outpouring of community support to protect them. Most of the $1.35M came from 140 citizens and businesses\, who demonstrated their commitment to preserving the meadows’ natural beauty. Flood waters from Nordhoff High School and Maricopa Highway were diverted onto the meadows bringing wildlife back to the area. As timeanddate.com explains\, the Moon orbits Earth in an elliptical path\, which means one side of the path is closer to the Earth than the other. The point in the Moon’s orbit closest to Earth is called perigee\, while the point in the orbit farthest from Earth is known as apogee. When a Full Moon or a New Moon occurs around apogee\, it’s called a Micromoon\, Minimoon or Apogee Moon because it appears to be smaller. A Full or New Moon that occurs around perigee is called a Supermoon. \nWe’ll meet at the trailhead at 3:45 p.m. for a 4:00 p.m. start\, then gradually hike about 1.5 miles to the viewing site\, experiencing some elevation gain on a well-worn\, dirt fire road with uneven footing in places. Please email register@herbwalks.com. \nABOUT RONDIA KAUFER:\nBorn in Texas while her father served in the Air Force\, Rondia was raised in her parents’ hometown of Chicago. But the story of her cooking begins in Mississippi where her parents grew up. \n“The first thing I remember about cooking is dissecting a whole chicken\,” Rondia told me. “My mother would always make fried chicken on Sundays. She had to buy whole chickens because it was cheaper and she would always buy two to feed us all. By then I had two younger brothers\, one younger sister\, an older half-brother\, and my mother was pregnant. I would stand on a chair and watch her or Grandma Alma dissect the chickens in the kitchen sink. \n“When I got older\, my mother would guide me with the chicken dissecting and then I would watch the rest: how she coated the chicken and fried it in a big skillet. Boy\, did it smell good with all the seasoning she would put in her batter! Later she taught me how to tell if the chicken was done. My mother would always cook rice and gravy with the fried chicken. Grandma Alma would have me help her make biscuits. That’s how I learned to make biscuits from scratch. So there’s the first Mississippi meal I made standing on a chair over the stove: fried chicken\, rice\, gravy and biscuits for eight.” \nAs a teenager\, Rondia was the designated chef for her musical family’s’ popular backyard barbecues. When the chicken and ribs came off the grill\, she turned in her apron for a red electric guitar. As Rondia and her brothers played the Isaac Hayes hit\, “Theme from Shaft\,” Rondia’s culinary and musical reputation spread through the neighborhood\, granting her a kind of immunity from the gang violence that made the Cabrini-Green project a national symbol of all that was wrong with inner city housing. \nIn her second life after moving to California\, raising her kids\, and retiring from the nursing profession\, Rondia became known locally in Ojai for the fried chicken she served at the Bowlful of Blues and her barbecued chicken wings at the Ojai Mardi Gras. Free registration is available at the event page at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden website. Guests who reserve a space for the herb walks will need to return to the website at a later date to reserve (and pay for) for admission.\nPlease join me for a free herb walk and book signing event at the world-renowned Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Regular garden admission will apply as it does every day but there is no additional charge for the guided walk. This workshop is based on his ground-breaking pharmacological studies on local native plants and his personal commitment to sharing the traditional medicinal practices he learned from Chumash healer Cecilia Garcia. He will be joined by plant educator Enrique Villaseñor and acupuncturist Michelle Wong\, co-authors with him of Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West: Cultural and Scientific Basis for Their Use. Participants will learn how to make California plant medicines\, how to process foraged foods\, and the history of California Indians. \nThe workshop will be held at two locations. The morning outing from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. will be a slow-paced walk at Cluff Vista Park native plant garden and the Chumash Garden at the Ojai Valley Museum identifying and discussing local medicinal plants. It will involve stopping for discussion for periods of time. As he tells it\, “My family came to Virginia in 1635 and has always survived by using American Indian healing. On the frontier\, there were no doctors. American Indian healing was better than European medicine anyway. I continue this tradition.” \nNow retired from active teaching and enjoying his new status as Professor Emeritus\, Dr. Adams taught pharmacy students\, medical students\, doctors and other healthcare professionals for over 30 years at USC while researching the natural pharmaceutical compounds in native plants. He has over 200 publications. \nRunning parallel with his academic career\, Dr. Adams has worked with the Chumash people of the San Fernando Valley since 1998 and studied Chumash healing with Cecilia Garcia for almost 15 years. They wrote a book and 30 journal articles together. Jim is now the carrier of the healing knowledge passed to him by his teacher. \nDr. Adams is the co-author\, with Michelle Wong and Enrique Villaseñor\, of the fourth edition of the groundbreaking book\, Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West: Cultural and Scientific Basis for Their Use. The cultural information is based on the teachings of Cecilia Garcia and the scientific portion on Dr. Adams’ laboratory studies. Nearly destroyed by development\, the remaining estuary was restored in the late 1990s by a group of concerned citizens along with the City of Carpinteria\, UCSB\, and the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County. It is home to hundreds of migrating birds and other wildlife\, including exotic sharks\, rays and native fish when conditions are right. This event is scheduled to coincide with the right time of year and tide level to be able to see the marine wildlife. We shall see if the best laid plans of mice and men prevail. No guarantees. \nThere also is a great variety of edible and medicinal plants of the Coastal Strand and Coastal Sage Scrub plant communities which\, predictably\, will be there for us to see and learn from. Photo: Lanny Kaufer \nOn Sunday\, September 18\, 2022\, I will lead my 10th annual Fall Equinox Nature Hike in the peaceful Mixed Conifer Forest on the “sky island” known as Pine Mountain (elevation: 7000 feet). I promise that first time visitors to this area will be surprised and delighted to find a thick forest of pines\, fir and incense-cedar so close to the Ventura coast. If we’re lucky\, pine nuts will be falling as we walk. \nAccording to Craig Carey\, author of Hiking and Backpacking Santa Barbara and Ventura\, the Reyes Peak Trail along the northern slope of the peak is “quite simply one of the most beautiful stretches in the southern Los Padres.” \nBiogeographers include Pine Mountain in a select group of “sky islands\,” defined as isolated mountains surrounded by radically different lowland environments. We can expect to see several high-altitude plants and trees like White Fir and Sugar Pine more commonly found in the Southern Sierra Nevada mountains. Weather and marine layer permitting\, we will have panoramic views of the Cuyama Valley to the north and the Channel Islands to the south. \nRondia and friends enjoying lunch. Photo: Chris Kudelka \nThe outing will start at 9:00 a.m. with a car caravan (or carpool for those open to it) of about 36 miles up Highway 33 from the Maricopa Plaza\, (1207 Maricopa Highway\, Ojai\, CA 93023) to the Reyes Peak trailhead. The last 6.5 miles include 5.5 miles on a narrow\, winding\, paved road and the very last mile on a dirt road. Photo: John Griffith \n  \n  \nWe will start walking into the Sespe Wilderness from the trailhead (where there is a restroom) at about 10:30 a.m.\, stop for lunch (not provided) in the forest\, and return to the trailhead by about 3:30 p.m.\, arriving back at the Maricopa Plaza by about 4:00 p.m. We will hike on a well-used trail through mixed conifer forest habitat\, stopping often to identify and discuss native plants\, birds and wildlife. \nThis intermediate level hike is suitable for fit\, moderately experienced hikers or physically fit beginners. There will be some elevation gain and loss skirting the north side of Reyes Peak\, sometimes traversing steep hillsides on a narrow trail. If spaces become available they will be filled based on time of registration.\nREGISTER\nOn Friday evening\, September 9\, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.\, I’ll lead a Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike above the Ojai Valley where we can watch the simultaneous sunset and moonrise. Technically\, the moon will reach complete fullness at 2:59 a.m. on Saturday morning\, making Friday night an ideal time to view the full moon. \nWe’ll meet at the trailhead at 5:45 p.m. for a 6:00 p.m. start\, then gradually hike about 1.5 miles to a vista point\, experiencing some elevation gain on a well-worn\, dirt fire road with uneven footing in places. Along the way we’ll stop to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants\, possibly including: \nCalifornia Buckwheat\nBlack & Purple Sage\nToyon\nHollyleaf Cherry\nPrickly-Pear\nand\, hopefully\, the fragrant night-blooming Brickellbush. \nAfter witnessing the sunset and moonrise\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead by 8:30 p.m. \nI will have copies of my new book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, with me for sale and signing before and after the hike. \nHeavy rain or chance of thunderstorms will cancel the hike. The Montecito Journal describes it as “one of Santa Barbara’s most significant treasures.” Now that the Alisal Fire swept through it in October of 2021\, it also serves as an example of the amazing regenerative power of Nature. On August 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\, I’ll return for the first time since the fire to observe how the land is regaining its legendary status as “the jewel of the Gaviota Coast.” \nThe Alisal Fire approaching Arroyo Hondo. If you prefer\, when you register you may request instructions for mailing a check for $25/person. \nREGISTER\nPlease join me and my wife Rondia for the third in a series of leisurely evening strolls on the historic wetland that is now the Ojai Meadows Preserve on Wednesday\, June 29\, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. We’ll identify native plants that have been used for centuries by the Chumash and other Indigenous people of California for shelter\, food\, medicine\, fiber\, ceremony and much more. Gardeners will discover how these plants can be used in home yard and garden landscapes. We’ll view first-hand the many benefits of the preservation and restoration of this special piece of land by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy  (OVLC). In the pond at the low spot in the wetland\, we’ll likely see waterfowl and typical wetland plants such as tules. This walk is presented under a Special Use Permit from OVLC. \nFor decades the wetland was buried under sediment and fill dirt from nearby construction. A grove of non-native Eucalyptus trees was planted in the 1950s\, negating the possibility of native habitat returning on its own. The property also was threatened with the possibility of a shopping center and parking lots. The meadows were acquired in 2000 by the OVLC with an outpouring of community support to protect them. Most of the $1.35M came from 140 citizens and businesses\, who demonstrated their commitment to preserving the meadows’ natural beauty. Flood waters from Nordhoff High School and Maricopa Highway were diverted onto the meadows bringing wildlife back to the area.
