The Montecito Journal describes it as “one of Santa Barbara’s most significant treasures.” Now that the Alisal Fire swept through it in October of 2021\, it also serves as an example of the amazing regenerative power of Nature. On April 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\, I’ll return for the first spring visit since the fire to observe how the land is regaining its legendary status as “the jewel of the Gaviota Coast.” \nThe Alisal Fire approaching Arroyo Hondo. Photo: Land Trust for Santa Barbara County\nWe’ll look in the creekside riparian habitat for the resprouting and re-emergence of Southern California native trees\, including White Alder\, California Bay\, Blue Elderberry\, Bigleaf Maple\, and Coast Live Oak. Where the tree canopy used to be\, we’ll seek out signs of the return of shade-loving native plants and herbs like Giant Horsetail\, Gooseberry\, Hummingbird Sage\, Maidenhair Fern and Giant Chain Fern. \nCarrizo Grass returning on Day 52. Photo: Land Trust for Santa Barbara County\nCalifornia Bay tree resprouting from the crown. Photo: Land Trust for Santa Barbara County\nReturn of the Giant Chain Fern (Day 52). Photo: Land Trust for Santa Barbara County\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe sunnier exposed sage scrub and chaparral areas were hardest hit by the fire but I still expect to see natives like Toyon\, Black Sage\, Coastal Sagebrush\, Lemonade Berry\, and Greenbark Ceanothus resprouting or popping up from the seed bank stored below the soil surface. \nWestern Sycamore resprouting from the base of the burnt trunk. Photo: Land Trust for Santa Barbara County\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAfter the walk\, I will break out my mobile bookstore\, including copies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, available for sale and signing. A number of the plants that we’ll meet can be found in the book. I’ll also have Milt McAuley’s classic Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains which includes every plant we’ll see. \nThe cost for the walk is $40. Senior\, student and child discounts are available by request. The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County also requests a suggested $10 donation at the site to cover stewardship of the land. Once registered\, attendees will receive an email during the week prior to the walk with more information and directions to Arroyo Hondo. No dogs or smoking are allowed. \nParticipants will receive an email afterwards with notes and a complete list of all plants and wildlife observed. \nPlease be sure to use the REGISTER link below before returning to this page to click on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee. \nREGISTER\nThere’s not been a better time in recent memory to experience the wetland at the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy’s Ojai Meadows Preserve. Please join me and my wife Rondia for a leisurely nature walk on the historic wetland on Sunday\, April 2\, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. We’ll identify native plants that have been used for centuries by the Chumash and other Indigenous people of California for shelter\, food\, medicine\, fiber\, ceremony and much more. Gardeners will discover how these plants can be used in home yard and garden landscapes. We’ll view first-hand the many benefits of the preservation and restoration of this special piece of land by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy  (OVLC). In the main pond at the lowest spot in the wetland\, we’ll see waterfowl and typical wetland plants such as tules and cattails. This winter’s rains have brought up several smaller vernal pools as well. This walk is presented under a Special Use Permit from OVLC. \nFor decades the wetland was buried under sediment and fill dirt from nearby construction. A grove of non-native Eucalyptus trees was planted in the 1950s\, negating the possibility of native habitat returning on its own. The property also was threatened with the possibility of a shopping center and parking lots. The meadows were acquired in 2000 by OVLC with an outpouring of community support to protect them. Most of the $1.35M came from 140 citizens and businesses\, who demonstrated their commitment to preserving the meadows’ natural beauty. Flood waters from Nordhoff High School and Maricopa Highway were diverted onto the meadows bringing wildlife back to the area. Native plant restoration is an ongoing project. \nSame section of highway AFTER diversion of water into historical wetland at Ojai Meadows Preserve. I’ll also have Milt McAuley’s classic Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains which includes every plant we’ll see. \nPaid registrants will receive a confirmation email with parking directions\, what to bring\, etc. Afterwards\, they will get a follow-up email with a list of all plants and wildlife seen. Both will happen around 7:20 p.m. \nThe moon will not appear pink. The name comes from the bright pink wildflowers of the Phlox family\, like our local Prickly Phlox (Linanthus californicus)\, that are native to North America and bloom around the time of April’s full moon. \nPrickly Phlox (Linanthus californicus)\nWe’ll meet at the trailhead at 5:45 p.m. for a 6:00 p.m. start\, then gradually hike about 1.5 miles to the viewing site\, experiencing some elevation gain on a well-worn\, dirt fire road with uneven footing in places. Along the way we’ll stop to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants\, including: \nBlack & Purple Sage\nBlue Elderberry\nCoastal Sagebrush\nPrickly-Pear and\nHorehound \nWe’ll also identify Poison Oak and look for Prickly Phlox. \nAfter witnessing the sunset and moonrise\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead at about 8:30 p.m. I will have copies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, for sale and signing before and after the hike. \nHeavy rain or chance of thunderstorms will cancel event. \nREGISTRATION INFO:\nThe cost of the hike is $35. If you prefer\, when you register you can request instructions for mailing a payment of $85/adult or $45/child under 18.\nIf the event sells out\, PayPal will not accept your payment. After that we will make every effort to fill your space but cannot guarantee it.\nREGISTER\nJoin me and famed author/forager/survivalist Christopher Nyerges on Saturday\, April 15\, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Ojai for an Outdoor Survival Skills workshop based on the book of the same name by legendary survival expert Larry Dean Olsen. Christopher edited the recent 2021 7th Edition of this classic. The workshop will begin with a morning plant walk on Euterpe Farms\, overlooking the Ventura River Preserve. The afternoon workshop will take place under an oak tree. Everyone will have a chance to participate in all activities. \nParticipants will: \n\nlearn to identify edible\, medicinal and otherwise useful plants of the season\npractice making cordage and soap from yucca leaves\nobserve the most basic primitive fire-starting methods: the hand drill and bow drill\nprepare a cooked prickly-pear cactus salad using the primitive fire\nlearn principles of finding and purifying water\, especially in dry areas\n\nAttendees will have the opportunity to try starting a primitive fire with expert supervision. Time permitting\, participants may also learn a few simple animal traps\, such as snares and deadfalls. There may be other activities\, depending on seasonal foods and supplies available.  Christopher will have copies of his books for sale and signing. I will have my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, available as well. \nChristopher writes of Olsen: “Anyone who has been teaching outdoor survival skills for any length of time has undoubtedly heard of Larry Dean Olsen…After Olsen graduated from Brigham Young University\, he began teaching survival field trips through the college’s Continuing Education Division in 1968\, sharing his love for the outdoors\, and his intense interest in the skills of the local indigenous peoples…As part of his outdoor training\, he would take students into the desert of the Great Basin area and live off the land for a week or longer. They had to learn how to eat wild plants\, trap small game\, make fire with local materials\, build a shelter\, weave sandals\, find water\, and more. It was a grueling adventure. He wrote Outdoor Survival Skills\, first published in 1967\, which described all the survival skills he’d been teaching. His book has long been considered the definitive classic book on the subject. The book has been updated every few years and remained in print all these years.…Larry was perhaps the most visible person teaching and sharing the extreme art of living off the land.  It is not an overstatement to say that everyone today teaching these skills has some lineage\, direct or indirect\, that leads back to Larry Dean Olsen.” \nChristopher Nyerges is an author\, forager\, survivalist and ethnobotanist with a lifelong interest in how native peoples lived off the land. He has been teaching classes and leading field trips since 1974 to over 40\,000 students. Nyerges has authored nearly two dozen books\, including Foraging California\, Guide to Wild Foods\,  Nuts and Berries of California\, How to Survive Anywhere\, Extreme Simplicity\, and many others. As mentioned above\, Chicago Review Press\, the publishers of Larry Dean Olsen’s Outdoor Survival Skills\, asked Christopher to lightly edit the 7th edition of this classic book and add color photos and a new foreword. \nIn recent years\, Christopher was the editor of American Survival Guide magazine and served as editor of Wilderness Way magazine for 7 years. He has written several thousand newspaper and magazine articles in such publications as the Los Angeles Times\, Pasadena Star News\, Pasadena Weekly\, Whole Life Times\, Countryside\, Mother Earth News\, Acres USA\, American  Survival Guide\, and others. \nChristopher has appeared on the late Huell Howser’s public television series on California\, KCET’s “Life and Times\,” and National Geographic’s “Doomsday Preppers.” For two years\, he appeared on Fox TV’s “X Show\,” where he demonstrated survival skills on the streets of Los Angeles. He currently serves as a consultant to the “Naked and Afraid” show on Discovery.  Christopher Nyerges’ web site is SchoolofSelf-Reliance.com. \nREGISTRATION INFO:\nPlease note: This workshop will go on RAIN OR SHINE with the exception of a heavy downpour in the morning and/or a 100% chance of heavy rain that day. No dogs (other than service dogs) and no smoking\, please. \nPaid registrants will receive a confirmation email with all necessary info\, including weather forecast and parking directions\, a few days prior to the workshop.  They also will receive a follow-up email afterwards with a list of all plants identified\, recipes\, valuable links and more. \nThe cost for the workshop\, including all materials\, is $85 for adults and $45 for children under 18\, one child per adult. \nPlease be sure to use the REGISTER link below or at the bottom of the page before clicking on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. You can sign up at this link on the Taft website. You also can register by emailing taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com.  Please see my calendar for another Taft walk on May 20. \nRegistrants will receive an email from CEF with detailed directions and a waiver form. Please do not try to find the venue by using other maps or GPS. Allow plenty of time to find the venue and to make your way up the miles-long driveway. \nPlease join me for a Natural History Walk at Taft Nature Preserve on Saturday\, April 29\, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.\, meeting at 8:45 a.m. We will explore trails through the wild parts of the property\, identify and discuss native plants\, and observe birds and signs of wildlife in the context of local ecology. This event is a perfect fit with my personal mission to open a space for people to connect with the natural world\, starting with the plant community. And Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve is an amazing place! In fact\, it was recently featured in an L. A. Times article on “The 16 Most Beautiful and Inviting Public Gardens in Southern California.” \nThe $35 cost includes a $10 donation to benefit the CEF\, the non-profit steward of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. The donation portion of the fee is tax-deductible. Space is limited so please register today by email to taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com. \nI will have my mobile bookshop onsite after the walk\, including my new book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, and Milt McAuley’s classic Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains which features every plant we will see. \nPlease plan on leaving dogs and cigarettes at home. Thanks! \nPlease note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF)\, stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. They are handling all registrations.
