Note: Online payment includes a PayPal fee. If you prefer\, when you register you can request instructions for mailing a payment of $75/person as long as there is still time for mail delivery. Space is limited due to the layout of the garden\, so don’t delay registering. Previous workshops and garden tours sold out.\nIf the event sells out\, PayPal will not accept your payment. You will see a message that says this event “is not available at this time” and you will be returned to this page. If that happens\, be sure to click on the REGISTER button below to sign up for the waiting list. If spaces become available they will be filled based on date and time of waiting list signup.\nCancellation policy: I will refund your payment if you notify me up to 72 hours (3days) before the start of the event. After that I will make every effort to fill your space (and I’m usually successful) but cannot guarantee.\nREGISTER\nI invite you to join me and professional herbalist Carol Wade in Ojai on Saturday\, June 10\, at her Earth Island Medicinal Herb Garden for a 6-hour\, early summer outdoor workshop to appreciate this amazing garden and gain hands-on experience of the many ways plant medicine lends itself to whole body/mind health. In addition to founding and maintaining the Garden\, in 2016 Carol founded the Ojai School of Herbal Studies\, a 22-month herbal studies program that utilizes the garden\, hands on medicine making\, and an in-depth education in how to use herbs safely and effectively\, including terminology\, plant chemistry\, anatomy and physiology\, an extensive materia medica\, and actual herb cultivation. This workshop will be a sample of what her students experience. \nYou will spend the morning exploring this East End Ojai jewel with me and Carol as your guides. You’ll enjoy the beautiful vistas as you learn about how to grow and care for some of the many native and non-native herbal allies that live in the Garden.  We’ll gather a few that are just right for the season and prepare a sun tea under Carol’s direction. We’ll also learn the properties of plants that will be used in the afternoon hands-on processing part of the workshop. After lunch (not included) you will make an herbal sunscreen and an insect repellant to take home. There may be another project\, dictated by which plants are at their prime on June 10. A number of plants in the Garden can be found in my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California. More details about the day’s schedule will be described in a confirmation email sent to registrants. \nDreamed up long ago and finally made a reality in 2012\, the Earth Island Medicinal Herb Garden has taken years of intense work by Carol and her students to become the gorgeous landmark it is today. Since ground was first broken in 2012\, the garden has truly blossomed\, becoming a must-see stop for visitors and a place of respite and renewal for locals. With breathtaking views of the valley’s encompassing mountains\, the garden was conceived as a showpiece\, educational tool\, and medicinal resource in one. Designed in the shape of a nautilus shell\, the 11 main beds in the garden represent the major body systems\, and each is planted with specimen herbs from around the world specially suited to supporting and healing those systems. Above the nautilus is a sunburst row of production beds\, with plants for future harvest and use in tinctures\, salves\, oils and other preparations. \nABOUT CAROL WADE:\nCarol Wade has been practicing as an herbalist and nutritional counselor for over 25 years and is a Registered Herbalist with the American Herbalists Guild. She studied health education and nutritional counseling at the Gary Null Health and Nutrition Program in New York\, and she is a graduate of the Herbal Therapeutics Study Program and the Herbal Therapeutics Graduate Clinical Program of the Herbalist Therapeutics Research Foundation\, founded and directed by herbalist and ethnobotanist David Winston. \nHer garden\, the Earth Island Medicinal Herb Garden in Ojai\, California\, serves as a hub for several medicinal herb-oriented ventures that bring the idea of using medicinal herbs in daily living as a viable and logical choice to the community at large. \nIn 2016 Carol founded the Ojai School of Herbal Studies\, a 22-month herbal studies program that utilizes the garden\, hands on medicine making\, and an in-depth education in how to use herbs safely and effectively\, including terminology\, plant chemistry\, anatomy and physiology\, an extensive materia medica\, and actual herb cultivation. \nABOUT LANNY KAUFER:\nLanny Kaufer has been leading Herb Walks in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties since 1976\, educating hundreds of locals and visitors on the flora of the area with a focus on herbs that can be used for food and medicine. As an herbal educator\, Lanny also leads workshops and presentations throughout the Ojai-Ventura-Santa Barbara area on the edible and medicinal uses of California plants. He holds a degree in Biology from UC Santa Cruz and is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants (Falcon Guides\, 2021). \nPlease be sure to use the REGISTER link below or at the top of the page before clicking on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. Nearly destroyed by development\, the remaining estuary was restored in the late 1990s by a group of concerned citizens along with the City of Carpinteria\, UCSB\, and the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County. Completed in 1997\, the 8-acre portion of the marsh owned by the City of Carpinteria was renamed the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park. \nShovelnose Guitarfish and Round Stingrays seen from the bridge in the Salt Marsh on July 11\, 2021. The Montecito Journal describes it as “one of Santa Barbara’s most significant treasures.” Since the Alisal Fire swept through it in October of 2021\, it also serves as an example of the amazing regenerative power of Nature. On June 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\, we’ll return to observe how the land is regaining its legendary status as “the jewel of the Gaviota Coast.” \nThe Alisal Fire approaching Arroyo Hondo. Photo: Land Trust for Santa Barbara County\nWe’ll look in the creekside riparian habitat for the resprouting and re-emergence of Southern California native trees\, including White Alder\, California Bay\, Blue Elderberry\, Bigleaf Maple\, and Coast Live Oak. Where the tree canopy used to be\, we’ll seek out signs of the return of shade-loving native plants and herbs like Giant Horsetail\, Gooseberry\, Hummingbird Sage\, Maidenhair Fern and Giant Chain Fern. \nCarrizo Grass returning on Day 52. Photo: Land Trust for Santa Barbara County\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe sunnier exposed sage scrub and chaparral areas were hardest hit by the fire but I still expect to see natives like Toyon\, Black Sage\, Coastal Sagebrush\, Lemonade Berry\, and Greenbark Ceanothus resprouting or popping up from the seed bank stored below the soil surface. \nWestern Sycamore resprouting from the base of the burnt trunk. Photo: Land Trust for Santa Barbara County\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAfter the walk\, I will break out my mobile bookstore\, including copies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, available for sale and signing. A number of the plants that we’ll meet can be found in the book. I’ll also have Milt McAuley’s classic Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains which includes every plant we’ll see. \nThe cost for the walk is $45 which includes $10 for The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County to cover stewardship of the land. Once registered\, attendees will receive an email during the week prior to the walk with more information and directions to Arroyo Hondo. No dogs or smoking are allowed. \nParticipants will receive an email afterwards with notes and a complete list of all plants and wildlife observed. \nPlease be sure to use the REGISTER link below before returning to this page to click on the PayPal button to complete payment and secure your space. SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Walkabout at Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Australian bottle tree  (Brachychiton rupestris) at Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve \nPlease note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF)\, stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. They are handling all registrations. To register for the event\, please visit TaftGardens.org or email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com.  \nRegistrants will receive an email from CEF with detailed directions. Please do not try to find the venue by using other maps or GPS. Allow plenty of time to find the venue and to make your way up the miles-long driveway. \nPlease join me\, Ojai author-naturalist Lanny Kaufer\, for a Summer Solstice Walkabout at Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve on Saturday\, June 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. “Walkabout” is an Australian term for a temporary return to traditional Aboriginal life\, taken especially between periods of work or residence in modern society and usually involving a period of travel through the bush. That is what I have planned for you in observance of the summer solstice. We will take a break from modern life for 3 hours to experience Nature as our own aboriginal ancestors did\, although for a much shorter time than the traditional Australian journey and as a group instead of solo. \nOur walkabout will begin in the Australian section of the Gardens and make its way through the wild plant communities in the Nature Preserve to the Four Directions Circle\, a replica of a Native American medicine wheel on a mesa with a 360 degree view. There we will greet the Summer Solstice Sun and the four directions as we reconnect with our own aboriginal origins. \nThe Four Directions Circle at Taft Nature Preserve. Photo: Alexandra Nicklin\nAs I do on my monthly Natural History walks at the Taft Ranch\, I will identify and discuss useful plants and observe birds and animal signs in the context of the local ecology. My intention is to create a space for people to connect with the natural world by learning the language of Nature. \nABOUT TAFT GARDENS & NATURE PRESERVE:\nA project of the nonprofit Conservation Endowment Fund\, Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve was described for years as one of Ojai’s best-kept secrets. Not anymore! This botanical gem was featured last year in an L. A. Times article on “The 16 Most Beautiful and Inviting Public Gardens in Southern California” and recently included in the RedBook Magazine list of “The 12 Most Beautiful Botanical Gardens in the United States.”  \nABOUT LANNY KAUFER:\nLanny Kaufer has been leading herb walks and nature hikes\, as well as foraging and medicinal plant workshops\, since 1976\, focusing on ethnobotany\, the academic term for the human uses of plants. He is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California\, published by Falcon Guides in December of 2021 and now in its third printing. Kaufer is the founder and director of the Ojai Herbal Symposium\, returning the weekend of November 11-12\, 2023. Read more about him at this page. \nTo register for the event\, please visit TaftGardens.org or email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com.
