Blanche St. in downtown Ojai. \nOn Saturday\, September 23\, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. I will lead an Edible Plant Walk in the Chumash Garden behind the Ojai Valley Museum. The walk is open to all by registration but it will be of special interest to those attending the Autumnal Equinox Beer Dinner at Ojai Valley Brewery\, featuring Barbareño Restaurant of Santa Barbara. You can reserve tickets at the link in the previous sentence for the dinner which begins at 6:30 p.m. Dinner reservations do not include admission to the walk. \nOn this particular walk\, I will focus on edible (and drinkable) herbs and wild foods\, some of which will be featured in the beers and on the menu at the dinner to follow the walk that evening. Allow plenty of time to find the venue and to make your way up the miles-long driveway.\n\nPlease join me for a Fall Equinox Walkabout at Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve on Sunday\, September 24\, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. “Walkabout” is an Australian term for a temporary return to traditional Aboriginal life\, taken especially between periods of work or residence in modern society and usually involving a period of travel through the bush. That is what I have planned for you in observance of the fall equinox\, although for a much shorter time than the traditional Australian journey and as a group instead of solo.\n\nOur walkabout will begin in the Australian section of the Gardens and make its way through the wild plant communities in the Nature Preserve to the Four Directions Circle\, a replica of a Native American medicine wheel on a mesa with a 360 degree view. There we will interact with the four directions as we connect with the annual solar cycle and our own ancestral origins somewhere on Planet Earth.\n\nAs I do on my monthly Natural History walks at the Taft Ranch\, I will identify and discuss useful plants and observe birds and animal signs in the context of the local ecology. My intention is to create a space for people to connect with the natural world by learning the language of nature.\n\nABOUT TAFT GARDENS & NATURE PRESERVE:\nA project of the nonprofit Conservation Endowment Fund\, Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve was described for years as one of Ojai’s best-kept secrets. Not anymore! This botanical gem was featured last year in an L. A. Times article on “The 16 Most Beautiful and Inviting Public Gardens in Southern California” and recently included in the RedBook Magazine list of “The 12 Most Beautiful Botanical Gardens in the United States.” \n\nABOUT LANNY KAUFER:\nLanny Kaufer has been leading herb walks and nature hikes\, as well as foraging and medicinal plant workshops\, since 1976\, focusing on ethnobotany\, the academic term for the human uses of plants. He is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California\, published by Falcon Guides in December of 2021 and now in its third printing. Copies will be available for sale and signing after the walkabout. Technically\, the moon will reach complete fullness at 2:57 a.m. on Friday morning\, making Thursday night the ideal time to view the full moon without staying out too late. \nWe’ll meet at the trailhead at 4:45 p.m. for a 5:00 p.m. start\, then gradually hike about 1.5 miles to the vista point\, experiencing some elevation gain on a well-worn\, dirt fire road with uneven footing in places. Along the way we’ll stop to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants\, possibly including: \nCalifornia Buckwheat\nBlack & Purple Sage\nToyon\nYucca\nPrickly-Pear\nand\, hopefully\, the fragrant night-blooming Brickellbush. \nAfter witnessing the sunset and moonrise\, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight\, moonlight\, and flashlight\, returning to the trailhead by 7:30 p.m. \nI will have copies of my book\, Medicinal Herbs of California\, with me for sale and signing before and after the hike. \nHeavy rain or chance of thunderstorms will cancel the hike. No dogs or smoking\, please. \nREGISTRATION INFO:\nThe cost of the hike is $35. Please note: the PayPal payment will include their fee.
