Thank you for leading a terrific herb walk on a perfect day. In all my years in Ventura County, that was my first venture into the Potrero. I was immediately struck by the awe inspiring view of Mt. Haddock framed by complex sedimentary rock walls forming the canyon. I was a little surprised at the diversity of the flora in the canyon. Admittedly, I probably know less about botany than anyone else on the hike. The PDF document you attached will reinforce all of the in-field learning.

I came home with strong visual memories of walking between the walls of Canyon Matilija with the dry climate plants on one side and the green flora on the other, and with long vistas of the mountains beyond. I checked out Laurel Sumac on Wikipedia and found that it is the sole occupant of the genus Malosma and that it has interesting characteristics.
