Join me and renowned aboriginal skills expert Jim Robertson on Saturday, March 9, in Ojai for an outdoor Foraging & Firemaking workshop.

Participants will:

• learn to identify edible, medicinal, and useful plants
• learn and practice ancient hand drill and bow drill fire starting
• practice all the steps from creating an ember to building a fire

The workshop will begin with a morning herb walk among the native plants on the fringes of Euterpe Farms, bordering the Ventura River Preserve. Plants used for fire making will be identified and discussed. The afternoon workshop will take place under an oak tree (see photo). Everyone will have a chance to participate in all activities. All supplies and materials will be provided. Space is limited to allow for individual instruction for all participants.                    

Jim Robertson has been an instructor of aboriginal skills and wilderness survival training for over 20 years. He teaches regularly in the Greater Los Angeles area (Santa Monica Mountains, San Gabriel Mountains, etc.) and is a volunteer naturalist for the Santa Monica Mountains. Additionally he sometimes teaches in much more distant areas. The skills that Jim teaches help people to connect in very deep, meaningful, fun, and personal ways with their natural environment (and themselves). This connection motivates and inspires people to become good stewards of the land and of themselves… which is Jim’s goal.

Please note: This workshop will go on RAIN OR SHINE with the exception of a heavy downpour in the morning and/or a 100% chance of heavy rain that day. No dogs or smoking, please. Paid registrants will receive a confirmation email with all necessary info, including weather forecast and parking directions, a few days prior to the workshop.  They also will receive a follow-up email afterwards with a list of all plants identified and used, recipes, and more.
