Please join me for a natural history walk at Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve on Saturday, January 8th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon, meeting at 9:45 a.m. We will explore trails through the wild parts of the property, identify and discuss native plants, and observe birds and animal tracks in the context of local ecology. This event is a perfect fit with my personal mission to open a space for people to connect with the natural world, starting with the plant community. And Taft Gardens is an amazing place!

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Conservation Endowment Fund, the non-profit steward of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. Space is limited so register today at this webpage.

I knew I should’ve been taking notes, but didn’t want to hold up my husband and daughter, so of course I’m drawing some blanks when I look at my photos, mainly for the shrubs. I got laurel sumac, holly-leaved cherry, chamise (I liked what you told us about it being a good firewood in wet weather), poison oak, toyon, basketbush, desert sage, madrone, and manzanita. Now I just have to go through and “study” them. The “flowers” I think I have under control. Thanks again so much. We loved Ojai.

Thank you for leading a terrific herb walk on a perfect day. In all my years in Ventura County, that was my first venture into the Potrero. I was immediately struck by the awe inspiring view of Mt. Haddock framed by complex sedimentary rock walls forming the canyon. I was a little surprised at the diversity of the flora in the canyon. Admittedly, I probably know less about botany than anyone else on the hike. The PDF document you attached will reinforce all of the in-field learning.
