Medicinal Plant Workshop in San Luis Obispo

Please join me and forager Nan Cole for a very special event in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, June 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. I will lead a 2-hour medicinal plant walk in the morning, followed by an afternoon plant talk, Q&A session, and hands-on medicinal herb activities with me and Nan from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The afternoon session will include foraged snacks, a wild tea tasting, and an herbal steam inhalation. I will have copies of my field guide, Medicinal Herbs of California, for sale and signing before and after the walk and workshop. The walk will highlight some of the key herbs in the book as we meet the plants on the trail.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:

Lanny Kaufer

Lanny Kaufer has been leading Herb Walks and Nature Hikes in Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles Counties since 1976, educating hundreds of people on the local flora with a focus on herbs that can be used for food and medicine. As an herbal educator, Lanny also leads workshops and presentations on the edible and medicinal uses of California plants.

He is the author of Medicinal Herbs of California: A Field Guide to Common Healing Plants (Falcon Guides, 2021). Lanny will highlight some of the key topics in his book and share recipes. For his complete bio, visit this page.

Nan Cole

Nan Cole is a wild food maker, naturalist and foraging guide based in San Luis Obispo, California. She offers classes and workshops on how to forage and cook with wild edibles. She is especially interested in finding local alternatives to imported products. She received a Masters of Urban Management from the Technical University of Berlin in 2011.

From 2011 to 2014, Nan lived and worked in São Paulo, Brazil upcycling ‘waste’ materials and converting them into bags and art. She returned to the US and worked on a community education program for the proposed Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary. The Sanctuary would protect California’s coastline from Monterey to the Channel Islands. Since 2016, Nan taught Yin Yoga and led hiking tours throughout the Central Coast. The tours featured experts that lectured on the local ecology.

In 2020, Nan began offering plant walks, classes on traditional food preparation, as well as wild food tastings. She currently manages @ForagerSLO, an instagram site that features foraged finds from around the Central Coast, wild food prepping tips, and recipes.
