Haddock framed by complex sedimentary rock walls forming the canyon. I was a little surprised at the diversity of the flora in the canyon. I enjoyed the herb walk very much, and learned many things. As a gardener I have a great love for and appreciation of plants but you have broadened my horizons with some knowledge of the healing properties of plants. Many of the ones we saw will find a place in my garden! A part of the day that I particularly enjoyed was the blessing and welcome song at the bay tree before beginning our walk. Not only was it a lovely ceremony, but pausing for those few minutes gave me a chance to really look at the tree and notice its structure, the moss at the base, and the other plants around it. I came home with strong visual memories of walking between the walls of Canyon Matilija with the dry climate plants on one side and the green flora on the other, and with long vistas of the mountains beyond. I checked out Laurel Sumac on Wikipedia and found that it is the sole occupant of the genus Malosma and that it has interesting characteristics.
