I knew I should’ve been taking notes, but didn’t want to hold up my husband and daughter, so of course I’m drawing some blanks when I look at my photos, mainly for the shrubs. I got laurel sumac, holly-leaved cherry, chamise (I liked what you told us about it being a good firewood in wet weather), poison oak, toyon, basketbush, desert sage, madrone, and manzanita. Now I just have to go through and “study” them. The “flowers” I think I have under control. Thanks again so much. We loved Ojai.

After a lifetime of loving the green, growing things, spending the last better part of a decade attending as many workshops, symposiums and plant walks as possible, taking courses and studying with herbalists, botanists, and other plant enthusiasts, I wanted to let you know personally what I share with people all the time: that you are a wonderful teacher. It is rare to find someone with so much knowledge who still listens, who still is respectful of other opinions, and who still finds a sense of awe in the natural world. I really appreciate the classes you offer that give a platform for other teachers, but the ones I love most (by far!) are the ones you teach yourself. Thank you for leading a terrific herb walk on a perfect day. In all my years in Ventura County, that was my first venture into the Potrero. I was immediately struck by the awe inspiring view of Mt. Haddock framed by complex sedimentary rock walls forming the canyon. I was a little surprised at the diversity of the flora in the canyon. Admittedly, I probably know less about botany than anyone else on the hike. The PDF document you attached will reinforce all of the in-field learning.
