Robin Greenfield with his Food for a Year Pantry of Foraged Foods

Inspired to Forage? A Warm Ojai Welcome to Robin Greenfield

There is a beautiful wave of energy heading toward the Ojai Valley this week. On Friday, May 22, environmental activist Robin Greenfield will be speaking at the Sane Living Center downtown to share his incredible journey of living for an entire year by foraging 100% of his own wild food and medicine.

If you happened to open up Friday’s Ojai Valley News, you probably saw the buzz building around his visit. While I don’t know Robin personally and have no official association with his tour, I wholeheartedly support his deep love for the Earth and his dedication to living in reciprocity with nature. It’s an exciting time when our local media highlights the vital importance of foraging and reconnecting with the land.

Robin’s work is a wonderful global inspiration. He challenges us to look closely at our modern food systems and imagine what it truly means to live in harmony with our surroundings. I plan to be at his talk on Friday. I already reserved a seat and made a donation to his non-profit.

Taking the Next Step: From Inspiration to Local Dirt

When someone hears a talk like Robin’s, a natural spark of curiosity lights up. People walk outside, look at the plants growing right along the trail or even in their own neighborhoods, and think, “Can I eat that? Can that heal me?”

The answer is often yes—but turning that global inspiration into safe, real-world practice requires a relationship with the specific soil beneath your feet. True connection to the land isn’t a radical experiment; it’s a lifelong relationship built on careful sensory observation, accurate botanical identification, and a deep respect for local harvesting ethics. You have to know the plants, but you also have to know how to listen to them so we don’t over-harvest our beautiful valley.

If Robin’s presentation leaves you feeling inspired to get your hands in the dirt and learn the actual local botany of Southern California, I invite you to take that next step with me.

At the end of this month, my partners and I are hosting the Ojai Herbal Retreat: Roots of Renewal right here in the valley. Saturday, May 30, will be a full day dedicated to the practical, respectful application of these exact ideals—learning to identify, respect, and utilize our local edible and medicinal flora safely. And then on Sunday, May 31, Ema’s Herbs is hosting an Herbalism Networking Event in Ventura to complement the Retreat.

Welcome to Ojai, Robin. Thank you for sparking the conversation. And to everyone inspired by the buzz this week: let’s keep those roots growing deep right here at home.
