The materials in this book are intended to provide the basis for a unit of study on the Native Americans of Santa Barbara County: the Chumash, (pronounced” Choo-mahsh,” “a” as in “father,” not as in “flat”). Such materials have been generally unavailable, with the exception of Pamela Martens’ booklet on “The History and Culture of the Chumash Indians of Southern California,” which was printed in 1973.
