Mt. Diablo Globelily

It’s always fun to visit a different area and check out the local flora and fauna. Besides the Wild Turkey shown in the previous post from my hike in Mt. Diablo State Park, the find of the day was the rare Mt. Diablo Globelily, also known as the Mt. Diablo Fairy-Lantern. It’s Latin name is Calochortus pulchellus which puts it in the same genus with our local Mariposa Lily. Both are true lilies of the family Liliaceae and both were historically important food sources for Native American populations. Not that I would dig up one of these beauties for a snack.

Haddock framed by complex sedimentary rock walls forming the canyon. I was a little surprised at the diversity of the flora in the canyon. Admittedly, I probably know less about botany than anyone else on the hike. The PDF document you attached will reinforce all of the in-field learning.

I enjoyed the herb walk very much, and learned many things. As a gardener I have a great love for and appreciation of plants but you have broadened my horizons with some knowledge of the healing properties of plants. Many of the ones we saw will find a place in my garden! A part of the day that I particularly enjoyed was the blessing and welcome song at the bay tree before beginning our walk. Not only was it a lovely ceremony, but pausing for those few minutes gave me a chance to really look at the tree and notice its structure, the moss at the base, and the other plants around it.
